Hi all,

Just wanted to share the great deal DH and I got at Target. We saw a sign saying that if you traded in your current smartphone, they would give you an additional $50 off the purchase of a new iphone 5. The sign was in the store. I'm trading in a iphone 4, Dh is trading in a Iphone 4s. Target is giving us $322 for both old phones on a Target giftcard. Two new iphone 5 will cost us $300--we're both due for upgrades with our carrier. Each phone is $150 after the $50 coupon.

We do have to pay an upgrade fee with our carrier, but this fee is standard with our carrier--nothing to do with Target.

Just wanted to share!!

If your carrier is AT&T you can call and converse w/rep after you rcv bill with fee for upgrading your contract and most likely get at least one chrg dropped. We've been with them since '06 and I always have done such when contract is actually out before I upgrade. They are usually happy to have me hooked to 2yrs again so they waive fee lol

Thanks. We actually do have AT&T. I'll have to give them a call. We've been with them since '06 too!

Yep to debating the upgrade fee. When we upgraded dd's phone 6 months early for her birthday we had it dropped. We weren't rude about it at all, but got an awesome rep and explained our feelings to him clearly. I wasn't about to go into a new 3 year contract and pay them a fee for staying with them..end of story. So we explained clearly that while we'd like a new phone, we didn't need it, and if we were going to be charged $100 dollars we'd forget the whole thing. We could have waited until our contract was up and shopped around. Incentives for becoming a new customer somewhere else are usually pretty attractive offers.
The rep was great, dropped the fee, doubled her data plan, added voice mail and call display for free, gave her 500 more minutes, and gave her mobile tv for free. Her plan did go up $5 a month but it was going to anyway and it's twice the plan it was before.
My basic thought is this.. if you are agreeing to commit to another 2 to 3 years with a company they will be guaranteed to get your money monthly for a long time. That's good for them. You don't need to be paying them extra for that.

What is an upgrade fee?

If you are eligible for an upgrade do you pay the fee?

If you are only getting $322 for two iphones, you really should just sell on ebay on your own.

I had an iphone 4 with a shattered rear screen and minor scratched on the front screen and got $200 on ebay just for that. Had it been in better condition I would have gotten more.

iphone 4s's are going for around $250-$350 on ebay by themselves.

The other thing to consider is that Apple will be coming out with a new phone in a couple of months, so those iphone 5s (not 5s, but 5 plural) will be outdated. That may not matter to some, but it is something to consider.

What is an upgrade fee?

If you are eligible for an upgrade do you pay the fee?

With our carrier if it is an early upgrade you pay $100. This is only if you are close to the end of your contract and they have offered you an upgrade by snail mail or email. If you are way out from the end of your contract you pay a prorated amount for every month left on the contract.
This $100 is on top of the cost of the new phone and the inevitable increase in your plan. None of the plans were as cheap as the one we got three years ago obviously. The phone will typically be discounted but you still pay for it. So it can all really add up.

So the fee is only for EARLY upgrade? If you wait and upgrade after 2 years there is no fee?

AT&T has a $36 upgrade fee even if you are within you upgrade time. I believe that is the fee the PP was talking about. The $100 was if you weren't due an upgrade yet. My husband and I both just upgraded, got both phones free, and had both fees waived. Very nice! Had to add a data plan for DH since he still had an old flip phone, but I am grandfathered in for my unlimited data plan for a pretty low price.

Sorry.. yes it's an early upgrade fee with our carrier. But to even be eligible you have to be closer than 6 months out from the end of your contract. Any time before that you are just breaking contract and pay those fees.

This is also in Canada where we have the highest cell phone rates you've ever seen.
(Now I'll stop jacking the original post..my apologies OP!)

Does anyone know what the upgrade fee is with Verizon? I really really want an iPhone but my 2 year contract on my droid isn't up until March of next year.

I see.

I am looking to join ATT. Dh's work phone plan never allowed for family members to join, but they have changed that and allow us to just pay the difference, so I may very well be joining.

However, his work has a deal with them to NOT pay the $36 fee (they call it an activation fee not an upgrade fee).

So, I should be ok to not even pay that.

The on-time upgrade fee is $35. I'm not sure what an early upgrade would cost.

I saw that! Of course I'm not due for an upgrade until August 2nd. Can't wait to get rid of my iPhone 4, it's slow and the lock button is broke

So is this $35 "up-grade fee" the same thing as the kind of new activation fee some carriers are charging? Or is this an additional fee?

PP here Sorry for confusion on upgrade fee :-/ I was referring to AT&T carrier having a 35$ fee that yes is called activation fee when a phone is purchased in which most cases is the cause for upgrade The wording is actually how you can get them to waive said fee When you explain to most reps you have been "activated" for a long period of time therefore not willing to pay for said service again they will assist with politeness. I do not know about other carriers as we had T-Mobile prepay before our AT&T contract. Hope this explains it a lil better once again sorry for confusion. Happy Dance for the pp whom did get theirs waived =)

I know that Verizon has some sort of $30 or so fee for renewing your 2 year contract. They keep trying to offer me a free upgrade (my 2 year contract lock ended a year or two ago). The notices keep mentioning a $30 ($35??) renewal fee. Seriously? $30 for the privilege of being locked into a 2 year contract with them? :lmao: Nope, my dumb phone still works just fine, thankyouverymuch. No need for me to "upgrade" to a higher monthly cell phone bill right now.

I just upgraded a Verizon account yesterday at best buy and there was no fee. They have the iPhone 5 right now for $150. They were offering it free if I traded my iPhone 4s but I was keeping it and switching it to my moms line.
