Okay, just my opinion....but I don't understand why people have the need to stay connected while on vacation. It's a VACATION, people! As soon as we got settled in the first night and left Florida, our phones were off and stored away. I can't tell you how many people (especially kids) I saw with their faces buried in Facebook or Instagram. Yeesh. Learn to disconnect! It's only a few days and it's not going to kill you.

There are a number people (with a number of reason) who need to maintain contact. Business owners with no one to cover for them while they are on vacation. Sick family members back home. Parents who need to check in with babysitters. Not all vacations are "just a few days". Sometimes people are away for a couple of weeks.

All that being said, we lock up our phones in the safe once the cruise starts. But we do use the internet package to check our emails every 2-3 days.

Checking email once a day (which the included 50 MB doesn't necessarily cover) isn't "staying connected," it's realizing that your house, dogs, kids, extended family, etc aren't all with you. It's being responsible. This is different than spending hours on Facebook or huge amounts of time answering work emails.

We got the 50mb free package on each of our 3 cruises last year. It covered us fine (both of us). But then we usually only check emails every 2-3 days.

We use it to keep in touch with our son who is at home looking after our pets. Also the odd time he needs to check work if they have a question.

I found the internet extremely handy to be able to email family members as they roam freely on the ship.
