We just returned from a 9 day Florida trip, booked air (MHT - MCO) and rental on SWA vacations website. Our package included air for the 4 of us and full size rental, which we needed as we have a long legged preteen, and we planned on driving down towards Naples and wanted some comfort. I did not look for any deals on rental and air. I simply booked it.
When we arrived at MCO, we informed the Dollar agent that we had a reservation through SWA vacations, gave the name that the reservation was under and confirmed that we reserved and prepaid ($299. plus taxes) for a full size car. The agent then wanted to know when we were returning the car. I explained that we would have the car until 6pm or so on the day of departure, day 9 of our trip. We had already pre paid for 10 days because of the late return. The agent managed to double talk me (not hard to do when the speaker has a strong, hard to understand accent, the listener is tired and has 2 kids waiting and just wants to go) into charging $41.00 for an extra day because we were returning the car "late". We listened to the usual sales pitch and horror story about LWD insurance which we declined and were assigned our vehicle. I tried to get the agent (Jose) to tell me the kind of vehicle that we were getting and he first replied "It's like a blahblah. " (I forget what he said) I didn't understand why he would say "It's like a ....." so I asked "Well, I would like to know what it is, not what it is like." He said, "It's nice, you'll like it."
I thought that I was an aware consumer, I realize how different rental companies can be from each other as far as size classifications go and all.
Anyway, we went out to the garage to pick up our car and thought that it was smallish. It was a 2 door Dodge Stratus. We thought it must not be a full size but maybe I was mistaken, so off we went. It wasn't until the 3rd or 4th day of our trip that I sat down to figure the whole Dollar mess out. I called the dollar customer service number and explained my concerns with the size of the car and the extra day charge. The agent gave me a phone number to call the next day, as the auditing dept. was closed. I then called SWA vacations customer service and explained our problem. She stated that she would call Dollar on our behalf when the auditing dept was open the next day.
Well, I also made a second call to Dollar and asked what would be considered a full size. The agent replied "a dodge intrepid" I asked "What would a Stratus be considered?" She replied "An intermediate." Ah ha! We had paid for a full size!
The next day the SWA rep. left a message on my cell phone that we were charged an extra $41. and that it would be credited back to us.
I decided to call Dollar on the free down grade. Guess what the agent said to me? She said that the Status is a better car because its a sports car! I explained that if I wanted a sports car I would have reserved one and that I didn't need the agent to decide what was better for me. She left me on hold several minutes while she "spoke to her supervisor" . When she came back she offered to credit us $15. WOW!! Then she said that she would also credit us $41.00 for the 10th day (that i had paid for twice) like she was doing me a huge favor. I explained that it was owed to me, I had already paid for the 10th day.
After several minutes of further discussion she asked, "what do you want from us at this point?" Thats a good question. A sincere apology would be nice. This agent couldn't have cared less about anything I had to say and it was obvious in her tone. So, I decided that I had wasted enough time and was going to not stress over it anymore.
We returned the vehicle and the man that came to check the car in made a comment about the size of the car as we all were climbing out. My husband explained the whole story and the fellow said, "Thats just not right..." He gave us a slip of paper that said that we needed to go to the reservation desk and have this straightened out. I explained that I had already tried that but he was insisting. They must want to redeem themselves, how nice. So in we went luggage in hand, hot and tired, to the dollar rental desk to wait in line...again. When it was our turn we handed the agent, Kevin, the slip of paper, he looked up our reservation, after several minutes he came back and asked us what we want. We stated that the fellow outside sent us in and we gave a brief explaination of what our situation was. Kevin stated that there were notes made on out reservation and asked what else do we want? He blew us off and didn't care at all. So there was more time just wasted on Dollar rental. What a rip off and then some. I think that car rental businesses should be more regulated. Consumers shouldn't have to fight to get what they have paid for.

We have rented from Dollar several times with few problems. Although on our last visit we had a reservation for a full size SUV and were assigned a Jeep Liberty. When I questioned the agent they told me they were the same. I insisted that they were not but told him that is OK when I receive my Amex bill I will just dispute the charge. Just a few minutes later we left with a Dodge Durango.

Sorry for the runaround you got. It sures makes me glad I reserved with National!

We rented a "full sized car" from National last year and were given a Galant. Avis lists that car as an intermediate. I complained that the car was too small , but they didn't care. They said that it was a full sized car. You are right---regulating the industry would be a good thing. I don't know how they can get away with stating on their web site that a full sized car would be a Buick Regal or similar and then they giving you a Galant. I never even heard of this car before last years trip.

That is too bad you had such a problem with Dollar. You are absolutely right, they really need to regulate this car classification better. The best time to handle issues with being assigned the wrong size car is before you drive away, but as you said, you didn't realize what was what and it sounds like they took advantage of that. That is very strange though, I have used Dollar numerous times and have never had a problem with them doing something like this..

I had a small issue with Dollar once and wrote to their customer service department via email. The were very friendly and took care of the charge I wasn't happy with right away. Maybe you can try this or perhaps you can call your credit card company and put your charge into dispute. Maybe SWA can tell you how much an Intermediate would have cost you and you can demand the difference back in a credit.

I would suggest to anyone in the future if you go out to get the car that they have assigned and you do not like it for any reason you should refuse it. You do not have to take that car, you can ask for another one or refuse the entire rental.

Sorry that you had problems with your rental! I suspect that a Stratus is a "full size" according to the car rental agencies. I once upgraded to a full size at Avis and got a Chevy Malibu (piece of junk). I e-mailed Avis to complain that the Malibu was in no way anything like a Buick Regal / Pontiac Grand Prix that is advertised on their web site. Got a sorry, we'll try harder next time.

National is no better. Full size to them is a Mitsubishi Gallant, Malibu, Camry, etc. All rather small for us long legged people.

We have reserved an "Intermediate" through Dollar for our upcoming trip and I was told it will be a Dodge Stratus or "similar". We've used Dollar in the past with no problems and I hope that we have a good rental again.:)

Thanks for all for the replies...I did learn a lesson, but what happened to us was still wrong. Like I said, the customer shouldn't have to go to pick up their reserved car and then have to wrangle with the agent, ever, not to mention when the rental has been reserved and prepaid. I am grateful that I usually have no trouble with rentals. :sunny:

Wow, that is awful!! Even booking through Priceline (which typically puts me with Avis or Alamo), I've never gotten service that bad! Once Avis even upgraded us (and it was a good upgrade...up from a compact to the next grade). I would write them a letter, although it might not do any good. My sympathy is with you...that is a terrible example of customer service at its worst.

I believe car classification in the rental market is one step down from the actual classification used to sell cars. I.E. A full size car in a show room would be an intermediate in the rental industry. I rent from Hertz because I want a large car, which would be a Crown Victoria or Grand Marquis. These cars are classified as premium. A Taurus and Sable is classified as full size cars. These are Ford intermediates.

Hertz is one of my favorite car rental agencies.....we rented a beautiful Jaguar from Hertz for our August 2002 Miami trip. I think that we will stick to Hertz and Avis in the future as we have had the best service from those agencies.

Trying to rent a car from any company at Orlando Interntl can be a nightmare. About 10% of the employees actually speak english you can understand.

We were once charged $625 for a one week rental of a Ford Explorer - or some type of SUV. That was more than our room cost for the week at All Star Sports .

I'll never rent another car at the airport.

I rented one in Disney after we got to our hotel. No problems. It's still a hassle, though.

National is no better. Full size to them is a Mitsubishi Gallant, Malibu, Camry, etc. All rather small for us long legged people.

National considers a Malibu and Camry to be full sized, however the Gallant is considered mid sized. I still cannot get over the Malibu being considered a full sized car, to me a full size is an Impala, Regal, Monte Carlo or Intrepid.

I Have a reservation for a mini-van. Hope they don't downgrade us? How could they? A Cooper Mini perhaps?

WOW!!!! What a story! We switched from Dollar to National at the last minute for last week and now I'm so glad we did! We had a similar situation with car classes before and got a NEON the last time we rented an intermdeiate. It wasn't until logn after we got home that I realized we had been downgraded. I wonter just how many people they try to pull this with!

I hope your vacation was wonderful besides!! Welcome home!

In January 2002, L&M rented us a Gallant as a full size. I did not care for it. We got our stuff and 4 people in it, but it took some time to get it all in.

We have had this problem with National more than once with Emerald Service. Have you every tried to stuff lots of luggage in a small trunk. Hertz is the only rental company that delivers what they promise. They charge more but no surprises. #1 Club is the BEST. Your car is under a covered area with the trunk open. No lines no hassles.

I can sympathize with everyone's problems... I've rented from Alamo, Budget, Dollar and Hertz.

I'd have to agree w/ dvc guy that Hertz was the best. They are more expensive but were easy to deal with and only charged you for what you rented. We only used them because all the other companies were out of the size we wanted.

Budget and Alamo were the worst for me. Never seemed to be able to "Hold" the reservation. As Seinfeld says, "Anyone can take a reservation, it's the holding they seem to have trouble with, and that's really the most important part."

Anyone, I've used Dollar the last couple times in Orlando. They are OK but their FASTLANE is a joke. You end up waiting the same amount of time as the non-fastlane people.

All in all, I think the service you get probably depends when you are renting. If you rent a car on a Friday/Saturday mid-afternoon when all is crowded, you'll probably not have a fun time. They overbook their ressies so there's a good chance of getting that "downgrade". If you go on a Wednesday morning, it'll probably be more pleasant.

Hertz did the downsize to us in Philidelphia. We reserved a full size and they gave is this little Toyota (I had thought they only rented Fords) and insisted it was a full size. Had a devil of a time stuffing our things in.

Also in Orlando, I had a coupon for % off from the United States Power Squadron. They wanted the coupon AND made a copy of my membership card of the association I got the coupon from.

You have to watch them all.

I was just thinking of this.. It is kind of the reverse of the original post.... (Being forced to upgrade when you don't really want to... ;) ) My wife and I went to Las Vegas a couple years back, it was our first trip alone since our son was born... We get to Vegas and go to Dollar's counter.. It was about 1:30AM.. (Gotta love those red-eyes to Vegas..) They did the paperwork and said pick a car out of the compact aisle. Went outside, nothing there, went back, they said take a car out of the next aisle.... Everything was minivans in that aisle. My wife and I laughed, our first trip alone and we have to drive a mini-van which we drive at home. I went back in because I saw they had some PT Cruisers on a different aisle and another couple had just got in one after looking at the minivans and saying "they wouldn't drive a minivan.." So after seeing that I went back to the checkout counter and asked if it would be OK if I took one of the PTs instead of the mini-van which they said no problem at all.
