I just read in a post that the free dining was extended until the 13th. Is this true? I'll be really disappointed if it is, because I specifically booked my trip later to avoid the extra crowds that the free dining is sure to bring.

What post did you read that on? If that is the case then I will get free dining and I would like to call WDW to find out!

I found in in the Disney Resorts forum, in a thread titled "Is October a busy month?"

No, its for check-ins by October 4th. So if someone checks in on the 4th of October it is good for the entire stay.

We just went during the free dining but didn't use it ourselves. We were so worried that the restaurants would be crowded we made ADRs for EVERY meal. It was SO unnecessary!! After the second day we cancelled all our ADRs because we found the restaurants were relatively empty and we could just do walk-ups when we truly wanted to eat, not when we had the reservations.

Free dining may have increased attendance slightly, but since it's low season, it's still quite empty. We walked on everything at all the parks except Soarin' (15 minutes) and Test Track (10 minutes).

I'll second what yyzgurl said- there are no extra crowds due to the free dining. We arrived on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend and by Monday night the crowds were gone. Completely. All the rides were walk-ons or close to it, and we were able to rearrange ADRs as we went along. EMHs were practically deserted.
