In the latest Mouseplanet WDW Update,it is being reported that there will be a FREE "leveL" of D23!:)

FREE sounds good to me!:)

"D23 announces free memberships and a redesigned website
by Bryan Pugh
D23, the official Disney fan club, is making some big changes come June. D23.com is being completely redesigned to provide its members with access to new content. The new content available will include celebrity interviews, vintage film clips, rarely seen artwork and photography, treasures of the Walt Disney Archives, behind-the-scenes previews of new movies and theme park attractions.

The new D23.com also features new "departments" and sections as well: Weird Disney will look at the more unusual pieces of Disney's past. Characters will profile the most beloved characters from television, film and comics with concept art and biographies. The Quotable Walt Disney will contain a digitized version of the out-of-print book featuring Walt quotes. Ask a Legend will be a video feature where Disney Legends such as Marty Sklar will answer fan questions. First Look will give members a look at new, upcoming releases. And the current video series Armchair Archivist and Disney Geek will return with new episodes.

In addition to the new and redesigned website, D23 also announced a free membership level which will include access to the members only content on D23.com, exclusive merchandise access, a subscription to the weekly D23 FanFaire e-newsletter and discounted tickets to the 2013 D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center. The free membership is in addition to the existing gold and silver levels.

The redesigned D23.com and free D23 memberships become available on June 17."

Free D23 is worth exactly what you pay for it.

Silver level paid D23 is worth less than what you pay for it.

Gold level paid D-23 is worth a lot less than you pay for it, except they do mail you a magazine every quarter with a "gift".

(Having been a member for a few years. The only good thing is sometimes being able to get into the events that you have to pay separately for anyway.)

Exactly! While I'm a huge Disney fan, I'm not going to pay $30 just to say that I'm in the "official" Disney fan club. I can log onto the DIS and get a podcast (which is about three time as long as Disney Geek), these awesome discussion forums, planning info, a blog, and tons of interviews and such with Disney Co. members and imagineers. I think that's been the real problem with D23, few are going to pay for access to a select amount of events each year when sites like the DIS are holding meets all over the country. With a free level of membership, I'll definitely join!

Free sounds good to me too! :)

Thanks for posting, I will definitely be joining for that price.

ITA with Cheshire Figment and Andyman. The free part is worth every penny, the rest...not so much.:earsboy:

I agree with Cheshire Figment. I was a gold member for several years but have since let it lapse. Most of the events are in CA, and not once have I been able to do any of them. I felt like I was wasting money even messing with it for just a magazine.

BTW, I see the magazine in a grocery store I frequent. I'll bet it's at Barnes & Noble too. If it's just the mag you want you can buy it for face value and even take a peek to see if a particular issue contains articles that interest you.:earsboy:

Oh I might be more willing to check it out if its free. I wonder if they'll boost the "benefits" of the silver and gold memberships.

Starting with the D23 summer issue, only gold members will receive a copy of the magazine. It will no longer be offered for sale in retail locations.

D23 ain't long for the road...

It's basically the old
Magic Kingdom Club...but aimed almost entirely at Anaheim and with a really nice but overpriced glossy magazine.

They should just go to "clubs" focused around a fans "home base" park.
I would buy a membership to something that catered to WDW...but see no point in a "broad" one that was more focused on Disneyland.
I just can't get there enough to feel any value in that.

Lockedloutlogic makes some good points, I used to love the Magic Kingdom Club.
For all their efforts, Disney fails to miss the mark of what I want in a fan club. :earsboy:

Agree. The Magic Kingdom Club had something for all the fan base, worldwide. There were discounts for everyone and a decent magazine. Then they dropped that and went to the Chase Disney Card and which effectively made it only American focused. And then they get less inclusive with D23 and its narrow primarily Anaheim focus.

For some reason they have forgotten that they have a multinational fan base. The free D23 seems to be broadening things a bit but still doesn't seem to recognize what they had in the Magic Kingdom Club. It's almost like they are hostile to their international customers. Bring back the Magic Kingdom Club.

It's funny you bring up the visa...

I have two cards I use, basically for the rewards program...Disney and southwest visa.

I've had others in the past, incentives. Cash back, etc, etc.

I just like having a kickback when it comes to travel.

Now...what i hate about Disney visa is that there is very little incentive to use it on Disney products...a 10% discount at Disney store is fine...but come on, cheapskates...you should be giving at least double points.

Jerks...thanks for the special financing on Walt Disney travel company packages...which are used only by Infrequent travelers and make the point of having a Disney visa almost irrelevant

We have a disney visa and used it for the rewards for a few years, we too didnt feel the incentive programs were great, and we didnt like that we could only use the points on Disney related items. We've since switched to a Bank of America rewards card that incurs more points quicker and we have the option to gain an additional 10% if we "cash out" our points to a Bank of America checking account.

I think we'll have enough points to pay for a large part of our next vacation.
