Fred and Wilma do DVC, DCL and DDP - the food!

Thanks Joh for this. I think I was on a different boat to you!!! Our food seemed really different. I can't remember seeing any of those cakes and our servers were dire. We hated sitting with "other people" and I don't think they liked sitting with us either!. Our best food part was Palo but that was probably being able to sit on our own and get away from our servers. We will difinately have to try again. The drinks were great but our servers were so bad they just didn't serve us enough!

Susan

Susan, that's terrible. We should really have linked our reservations or something so we could have sat together. I must admit, we weren't fond of our table mates either as I think I told you, but our serves more than made up for it.

Great report Joh - especially love the descriptions of the puddings - yummy

Lovely pictures too

Great report

really looking forward to all the food on board the cruise

We had breakfast at Triton’s this morning, before disembarking from the Wonder. The rule on DCL is you eat breakfast at the place where you dined the previous night. It was great to see our wait staff one more time before we left. No pictures from this morning but we both had scrambled eggs, bacon and toast. I asked for my eggs to be ‘well done’ and they were perfect. The bacon was crispy and hot and the breakfast set us up for the drive back to WDW.

A couple more pics with our servers before we left and Grace suggested we do a ‘Charlies Angels’ type pose. Here it is!

Back at WDW, we checked in to ASMu and picked up our ‘Keys to the food’! After checking out the room, we decided to get lunch at the food court.

DH – cheeseburger and fries, with cherry pie for dessert

FloridaAug07438a.jpg

FloridaAug07441a.jpg

Me – chicken strips and fries, with marbled cheesecake

FloridaAug07439a.jpg

FloridaAug07440a.jpg

We both had diet cokes and the lady on the cash register happily let us get large ones.

The food was typical food court fare, although it was all freshly prepared so it was nice and hot. The chicken strips were better than the ones on the cruise, maybe because they were hot and fresh. DH enjoyed his cheeseburger but said he'd had better burgers.

I didn’t taste his cherry pie but he said it was pretty good. My cheesecake was OK, but nothing special - just cheesecake really. For some reason, every time I think about DH’s cherry pie, I just can’t get that Warrant song out of my head ‘She’s my cherry pie, put a smile on your face ten miles wide’ :rotfl:

Total spend - $0.00 (would have been $27.44 if paying OOP)
Rating - C-

Later, we went to Universal for the Blue Man Group show. I deliberately hadn’t booked a TS meal for tonight, thinking the show started at 6:30 but, unfortunately, we got there to find it started at 8. In order to get out of the rain and for want of something better to do, we ended up at NBA City for some dinner.

This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the food was excellent. We had no wait for a table, given it was so early and we ordered quickly. I had a craving for pizza but, as I don’t like tomatoes, I asked if they could make a plain margherita without the tomato (essentially cheese on toast!). That was no problem at all. One thing I love about America is that, unlike the UK, restaurants are generally happy to accommodate special requests without making you feel uncomfortable or awkward.

DH chose the General Jins chicken - chicken tenders sauteed in sesame oil, teriyaki, fresh ginger and garlic, served with Asian noodles and vegetables in General Jin's mildly sweet and tangy sauce

Again, we ordered diet coke to drink.

The food came very quickly and was piping hot – something we’ve often found, even in sit-down restaurants, is that the food is rarely hot when it reaches you. It was here, though, and it was nice to know it had obviously been freshly prepared and brought straight to our table as soon as it was ready.

FloridaAug07445a.jpg

FloridaAug07444a.jpg

My pizza was exactly what I expected, a thin and crispy crust with just the right amount of cheese. I hate it when the crust is burned at the edges and this wasn’t at all. It was absolutely perfect.

I tried DH’s chicken and that was lovely too. The sauce was sweet and very mild and the chicken was extremely tender. There were some crispy noodles artfully presented on top of the dish. They were pretty tasteless but I suspect they were more for decoration than anything else.

We were pretty stuffed when we’d finished but I really wanted to try one of the delicious-sounding desserts. DH agreed to share, which is something of a phenomenon, so we ordered the Brick Oven Pastry, which was described as sliced cinnamon apples in an open faced puff pastry baked in our brick oven until golden brown topped with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with caramel and chocolate syrup.

FloridaAug07446a.jpg

Oh my God, this dessert was to die for. The puff pastry was light and flaky and the apples were perfectly cooked, still slightly hard and nice and sweet. The ice cream and chocolate sauce went well and the combination of hot and cold was marvellous.

I had been slightly peeved that we were having to pay for dinner when we had free dining but this meal was worth ever single penny – it was delicious.

Total spend - $40.84 before tip (I forgot to use my AP for a discount here)
Rating – A

great food report and the pictures look great.

Great foodie reports Joh, your photos are brilliant (ooh, I wish I was on a Cruise right now). Sorry you weren't impressed by the Bahama Mamas, at least that leaves more for me :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I look forward to your next installment

Mandy :)

You are making em sooooo hungry and I've just had lunch:lmao:

This report is amazing - I just can't believe how delicious all that food looks - especially on the cruise! I am so excited about my 2008 cruise and after looking at these food pics I am even more so, and am now even more determined to lose at least a stone before I go so that I can indulge myself wihout too much guilt! Thanks for sharing your photos and your dining experiences Joh!

Joh, you're a bad. bad woman! that creme brulee looked positively orgasmic!

Firstly, massive apologies for not finishing these reviews sooner. Real life tends to get in the way sometimes. I’ll try not to let it happen again ;)

We had decided to use four of our TS credits today; for breakfast and dinner. A bad use of credits maybe – but we had two extra due to eating at Universal last night so this was the easiest way to ensure we used them all.

Our first stop was breakfast at Crystal Palace. We had done this previously in October 2006, when we visited with my daughters, and really loved it – particularly the puffed French toast – so we decided to give it another try. Whether it was due to the heat, too much food so far this trip or absence of children, neither of us enjoyed it as much this time round. Our ADR was for 8:05 and we were seated promptly. Our server was Ruth, who was courteous and professional but seemed hurried and didn’t really explain to us about the buffet or how it worked. Luckily, we already knew so, after ordering OJ and a hot tea, we set off to fill our plates – and our tummies!

Our first plates consisted of bacon, eggs, sausage and some yummy puffed French toast – OH MY GOD, this stuff is to die for. I could almost be tempted to say it is worth coming here just for this. I have still to try Kona’s Tonga Toast, though, so that may become my new favourite breakfast offering in April.

I went back for more French toast but really couldn’t bring myself to eat any more than a couple of bites, while DH declared he was full. At this point, I was very glad the food was ‘free’ as this would have been a very expensive breakfast otherwise.

No pictures of the food here this time, I’m afraid, but here’s a picture of DH with Piglet (who we hadn’t seen on our last visit here)

FloridaAug07456a.jpg

And the two of us with DH’s favourite, Tigger:

FloridaAug07458a.jpg

Just to note that the CMs were very good about making sure we got pictures with the characters, if we wanted them (which, obviously, we did). I have read previously that adults dining at character meals without kids sometimes felt the characters were passing them by. We definitely didn’t get that.

Total spend - $0.00 (would have been $47.29 if paying OOP)
Rating – C (just average – although the puffed french toast gets an A+)

After our hearty breakfast, we spent the day wandering around Magic Kingdom. It really was almost unbearably hot so we spent a lot of time trying to stay out of the sun. We visited a lot of attractions we hadn’t done before (despite 4 previous trips) and had a wonderful and relaxing day.

At lunchtime, neither of us were hungry but really fancied a refreshing snack – so we stopped at the Sunshine Tree Terrace (behind the Flying Carpets ride) and got a Citrus Swirl and a frozen raspberry lemonade.

FloridaAug07516a.jpg

FloridaAug07517a.jpg

I was slightly disappointed with the Citrus Swirl. Despite it being refreshingly cold, I was expecting the orange part to be sweet and tangy and it really wasn’t – it didn’t even taste that sweet to me. DH ended up eating most of this – he had to be quick, though, as it was melting almost as fast as he could eat it.

The raspberry lemonade was perfect – it really hit the spot on this hot day. Tangy, sweet and icy cold, it was just what I had been craving. We finished this off while in the 30-minute line for Pirates of the Caribbean (why, oh why, does this ride not have Fastpasses).

Total spend - $0.00 (2 snack credits – would have been $6.80 if paying OOP)
Rating – Citrus Swirl gets a D, raspberry lemonade gets a B

Later, after a brief detour back to the room to change, we caught the bus to Epcot for our ADR at Le Cellier. This was the most anticipated meal of our trip – would we be disappointed? Stay tuned to find out….

Firstly, massive apologies for not finishing these reviews sooner. Real life tends to get in the way sometimes. I’ll try not to let it happen again ;)

i should hope not !!

We had decided to use four of our TS credits today; for breakfast and dinner. A bad use of credits maybe – but we had two extra due to eating at Universal last night so this was the easiest way to ensure we used them all.

I am glad you are making an effort to use all your credits.....its such a waste not too :rotfl2:

We arrived at Epcot just before 3.30 pm (our ADR was 4:20) and walked slowly towards the back of the park. On the way, I mentioned to DH that I would like to see if there were any fast passes available for Soarin’. I wasn’t holding out much hope, given how late in the day it was, but I thought I would try anyway. DH must have thought I was fighting a losing battle and refused to walk over to The Land, claiming it was too hot to waste his energy so I went alone - and scored us two FPs for 7 pm. Result!!!

Arriving at Le Cellier just a few minutes early, we checked in and took a seat in the waiting area. We were escorted to our table right on time. It’s been said before but I will say it again – the tables here are close together!

FloridaAug07533a.jpg

Although there was nobody at the table right next to us when we arrived, another couple were seated there shortly afterwards – and we may as well have been dining together. In fact, we ended up spending the whole time chatting with them – it was difficult not to really as they were almost sat with us. They were a very pleasant couple, though, which made things a lot easier and we very much enjoyed having dinner with them :rotfl2:

Shortly after we were seated, our server, Lauren, arrived at our table, introduced herself and explained how the Dining Plan worked. We were told we could get non-alcoholic drinks, including smoothies, but no refills. She brought us some bread and gave us a few minutes to peruse the menu.

FloridaAug07536a.jpg

Obviously, being the conscientious DISer that I am, I had already chosen what I was going to have several months prior to our trip but DH gave the menu some consideration before ordering the Beef and Barley Broth. I opted for the Duck Two Ways as I love duck.

FloridaAug07538a.jpg

FloridaAug07539a-1.jpg

The appetisers arrived quickly and we happily tucked in. My duck was absolutely delicious. The sauce was sparse, which I was happy about – as I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a fan of sauces at all. This was not like a sauce, more of a light and sweet dressing and it complemented the rich duck leg perfectly. The little pieces of duck were very tasty too and this dish was an outright winner. DH really enjoyed his broth too – he only really ordered it because nothing else grabbed his attention but he was very pleased he did. He said it was very well seasoned, rich yet light and extremely tasty. It went very well with the wholegrain bread (which was lucky, seeing as I’d already polished off most of the pretzel bread :rotfl: ).

Next up was the entrée. For DH, it was the signature Maple Barbecue Filet with cream cheese mashed potatoes. I chose the New York Strip with roasted potatoes. To my utter disgust, DH ordered his filet cooked medium-well, which seemed a sacrilege with such a nice cut of meat, but he insisted he couldn’t eat it if it was bloody.

For some reason, the picture of DH’s meal didn’t come out too well but here is mine!

FloridaAug07541a.jpg

At the time I took this picture, the guy at the next table asked me what I was doing. DH then launched into the whole story about the DIS and trip reports, at which point the guy asked me if I wanted a picture of his entrée as well. So, what else could I do? He had the mushroom filet so here it is :rotfl:

FloridaAug07543a.jpg

DH inhaled his entire entrée as if his life depended on it, declaring it the best steak he had ever eaten. Mine was slightly disappointing – the food envy kicked in big style when DH paused just long enough to allow me to taste a tiny morsel of his steak. Unfortunately, that morsel was enough to make me wish I’d ordered the filet instead. I deliberately hadn’t got it because I was concerned about the sauce but I needn’t have been – again, it was more of a glaze than a sauce and it was fantastic. That said, my steak was very tasty and I was enjoying it before I tried the other one  My only complaint would be that the potatoes were slightly undercooked.

Finally, it was on to dessert. Lauren took our dessert orders, then those of the couple seated next to us. I went for the smores, having dreamed about them since first seeing a picture on the DIS some months ago. DH chose the crème brulee. We didn’t think anything of it when the table next to us received their desserts first but, within minutes, Lauren had arrived with ours – and an apology. She said that the orders had been backing up and someone had just grabbed the nearest thing, bringing it out to our fellow diners. As I say, it really hadn’t bothered us but Lauren seemed concerned.

FloridaAug07546a.jpg

FloridaAug07545a.jpg

A few seconds later, Lauren returned to our table and asked us if we had a problem with alcohol. It was quite funny the way she said it but she then re-worded her question to ask if we didn’t drink for any reason. I said that we didn’t have a problem with alcohol at all, thinking she may be about to recommend the ice wine I had read so much about but she didn’t – just left the table and us feeling puzzled. A minute later, she returned again with two glasses of champagne – having noticed our Anniversary pins, she told us the champagne was compliments of Le Cellier. It was a delightful and unexpected surprise.

FloridaAug07544a.jpg

Having confirmed that we didn’t require anything else, Lauren brought us the check. DH and I had already discussed it and decided to leave an extra tip as she had been so attentive and we’d had such a wonderful meal. Imagine our surprise when she returned to us, bringing this time a fast pass valid for us both for any ride in the park. This, she explained, was by way of an apology for the mix-up over the desserts. Again, a real surprise and definitely not necessary – but we gratefully accepted it.

FloridaAug07547a.jpg

Check paid and tip left and we were on our way. Our earlier fast passes, together with the ones from Le Cellier, meant we were able to ride Soarin’ twice before leaving the park – what a perfect end to the day.

Final thoughts – Le Cellier was our first real dining experience in Walt Disney World and it certainly opened our eyes to what we had been missing. We will most definitely be back – in fact, the ADR is already made for next April - and I will be ordering the filet next time ;)

Total cost - $20.00 tip (check would have been $107.48 if paying OOP)
Rating – without a doubt, Le Cellier gets an A+

Today we were at MGM. We originally had an ADR at Kona Café for tonight but MGM was a zoo and, by mid morning, DH and I felt we really needed to have a relaxing lunch somewhere to give us a break from the madness! We enquired at Guest Relations and were able to get a lunch ADR at 50s Prime Time Café. We promptly cancelled the Kona reservation (a decision I have regretted ever since, having seen the fantastic reviews :sad2: ).

At 11.40, we arrived at 50s Prime Time for our lunch ADR. We were called through almost immediately and seated just inside the restaurant area. We didn’t get a ‘TV table’ but that didn’t bother us too much. We could still see a TV from where we were sat.

FloridaAug07586a.jpg

Our server was Li’l Brother Charlie, who arrived at our table and told us Mom expected us to do our chores before we could eat. He left the menus, explained how the dining plan worked and told us to set the table :rotfl:

When he returned, I ordered a chocolate milkshake and DH got a diet coke. Neither of us wanted appetisers, partly because nothing appealed and partly because we just weren’t hungry enough. We chose our entrees – pot roast for DH and chicken sandwich for me.

Charlie returned with our drinks and poured my milkshake into a glass. It looked so thick and creamy, I couldn’t wait to try it. And it was delicious. I tried not to drink too much as I wanted to save myself for the food.

While we were waiting, we witnessed lots of antics going on around the restaurant. A guy at the table next to us went off to the restrooms. When he returned Charlie asked if he’d washed his hands, to which the guy replied ‘yes’. However, when Charlie asked him what colour the soap was, the guy told him it was pink and Charlie promptly replied ‘Mom doesn’t use pink soap, get back there and wash your hands’. It was hilarious :lmao:

Our entrees arrived soon afterwards.

FloridaAug07582a.jpg

FloridaAug07583a.jpg

DH loved, loved, loved his pot roast. I wasn’t too enamoured with my sandwich – my bad, really, for not liking sauce as I had requested it without. It was far too dry, the chicken was dry and the ham tasted really salty. I left quite a bit of mine.

When Charlie returned, he brought the dessert menu and DH thought he would be clever. He said to Charlie ‘Is she allowed dessert seeing as she didn’t finish her dinner’. Charlie’s response? ‘Nobody likes a tattle tale’ :rotfl2: I loved that Charlie put DH in his place like that. For dessert, we ordered a hot fudge sundae and, you guessed it, smores.

FloridaAug07587a.jpg

FloridaAug07588a.jpg

The smores were completely different to those at Le Cellier – much sweeter and dripping with melted chocolate. Very yummy. DH really liked his sundae, although he said it was nothing special.

Overall, we really enjoyed our experience at Prime Time. DH really loved the food – he still raves about the pot roast now – and, although I didn’t enjoy mine as much, we will definitely return, if only for the atmosphere and fun.

Total cost - $0.00 ($59.56 if paying OOP)
Rating – B (for DH’s food and the atmosphere)

Later on, after a rest back at the room, we headed over to Port Orleans French Quarter for a look around. I really, really wanted to try the beignets as well. Although we weren’t that hungry, we had counter service credits burning a hole in our pockets and decided to get something light from the Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory (try saying that when you’ve had a few :rotfl: )

DH fancied the jambalaya so ordered that and I decided to have the rotisserie chicken. It came with two sides and I asked if I could just have fries. I think the guy must have given me a double helping of fries because there were loads of them. I wasn’t even that hungry and knew I wouldn’t finish them. The jambalaya came with some kind of cornbread muffin, I think. We both got desserts from the bakery counter – DH got carrot cake and I chose a chocolate brownie. Because we knew we wanted beignets but had read they needed to be eaten hot, we decided to take our desserts back to the room and use a snack credit for the beignets when we’d finished eating.

FloridaAug07599a.jpg

FloridaAug07600a.jpg

FloridaAug07601a.jpg

FloridaAug07602a.jpg

We found a table easily and DH went to fill our cups (we had been able to get large soft drinks with our meals).

My chicken was absolutely delicious, tender and juicy and cooked to perfection. DH really enjoyed the jambalaya but found the sausage (chorizo?) a bit spicy. He ended up picking that out and leaving it on the side. I didn’t eat many of the fries but I ate every last morsel of that chicken – and could easily have gone back for more. I have already told DH we will be going back to Sassagoula on our next trip, just so I can get that chicken :thumbsup2

After we’d finished eating, we ordered a half dozen beignets (1 snack credit). These were prepared fresh while you wait and took a little time but it was most definitely worth it. They are little pillows of dough, deep fried and then covered in powdered sugar. Dough…fat...sugar…what’s not to like?

FloridaAug07603a.jpg

We ate three each and then waddled back to the car, taking our carrot cake and brownie with us.

Total cost - $0.00 (1 snack credit and 2 CS credits) ($36.03 if paying OOP)
Rating – B+

Great photos Joh

All that yummy food looks great. Have never tried the beignets at POFQ but will have to remember that next time.
