I had a similar experience with possums! The mommy got spooked by the lawn mower and dropped babies all over our back yard! I freaked out and called a "possum expert" and she said to leave them alone that the mom would come back....but after a few hours she hadn't and they stopped making sounds, I was devastated and crying...So I called the "expert" again and she told me to go ahead and collect them all and to get them to a wildlife shelter (which luckily we have one right down the road). I ran around and gathered them all up, 7 in all, and took them straight there, but I never had the nerve to call and see if they had survived.

Then 2 days later I found the mommy in one of our bushes and she still had 3 babies on her...I didn't know how to feel...sad that I had taken the rest to the shelter or glad that they hadn't died...

They were going to die if I didn't, but somehow I felt guilty that she only had a few left...nonetheless, I started putting food and water out for her and my hubby thought I was nuts to try to keep her around, but I felt obligated...I was tickled pink when I went for a run one morning and found chicken bones in the street from the leftovers I had left for her!
