So, our flight leaves at 6am tomorrow morning (15 hours from now). My husband, 6 year old DD and 2 year old DS, for 10 nights.

My husband works about 2000 km away from here and takes 3 flights to commute to work. He just called to say the charter flight didn't get in and he is stuck at work! I can take the kids and he will try to meet us down there as soon as he can.

I heard that there is some sort of signed letter required from the other parent if you are taking children out of the country. I don't have one!

Sorry I just had to vent! I have to go get this all straightened out!

I usually take a letter with me when I travel without DH. And I don't want to panic you, but I have been asked for it every time. Is there a fax machine he can get to and maybe fax you a letter, signed, with maybe even a copy of his liscense, or passport? Also he should include any numbers that he can be reached at while you are travelling.

Maybe he could get the letter (his signature) notarized before faxing it? Then it would be much more legal. Call customs immediately and ask them what to do, they are the only ones who truly can answer this.

Does that apply to married couples? Just wondering - not sure of Canadian laws.

Try faxing it. I traveled with DD in December without DH and I wasn't asked to show the permission letter but, I had it with me just in case.

I was asked why my husband wasn't it with me and that was it.

The way I read that, it's only 'recommended' and not required, since this is not an issue of custody or custodial rights.

Is that how everyone else reads it? I'm just asking... not that I'm ever going to be a citizen of Canada but I just have a curious mind.

It does not really matter if you are married, separated etc. It is to prevent parental abductions and having the other parent take the child out of the country without your knowledge and consent....not everyone gets asked for the letter, but they can deny you from crossing the border if you cannot prove that you have permission to take the child across the border......

It really is a pain, but if it can keep one child safe it is worth it as i would hate to even think of being that parent whose spouse/ex etc. took their child and left the country....

I would definitely contact the embassy before you leave. They will be able to give you any info on requirements of traveling into the US or back into Canada. I wouldn't take info on this topic from the boards here, as laws can change. Nothing against the boards of course, but getting incorrect info could create an issue once you get to the US and hit customs.
