Here in WNC, I hadn't really realized the effects of all of our rain from dear old Frances until watching the news tonight. The downtown area of the small town where I grew up (it's right next to the river) was completely flooded, but is getting better. Asheville had HUGE water problems from it and hoped to have them fixed today, but it got MUCH worse, and people for the most part still don't have water, and if they do, they have to boil it. All restaurants are closed, as well as the beautiful Grove Park Inn (2nd largest employer in the area). A local high school's football field, that they took tremendous pride in, is destroyed. It can be repaired, but not this season. A small river overflowed, causing a landslide. The dirt came out from under the homes, making the houses land on cars, vans, etc....but none are still in one piece there. It's just very sad...I know that it's nothing compared to Florida's horrible problems, but this had HUGE effects, even in the NC mountains, which rarely see this kind of problems. On a positive note-The Mountain State Fair is a go, and opens tonight. I hope everyone that goes has a safe and fun time. Sorry so long, I'm just in shock at the suffering even in this area....

 for you. I am still shocked by all the problems it has caused us. I work part-time at a restaurant and I'm so worried about the owners and the other workers. I am very thankful that I have a wonderful full-time job to take care of the bills and such. But so many people are out of work from these floods and then they have so many repairs and such to pay for.

They are installing my new roof right now and have been up there since about 8 am. Who knows if my carpet can be saved. My house stinks! I'm doing all I can to get the smell out. This afternoon I went to Sam's to get more cleaning stuff. Yesterday I realized that the water also ran into my pantry. You wouldn't beleive all the food I had to throw away. The sad thing for me is that renters insurance doesn't do me any good because my deductible is so high. It would not cover the cleaning supplies and such since it's for the walls and carpet.

It's pretty bad not being able to bathe or wash any dishs. I've got out the Purell to use on my hands. I've heard what is in the water and I don't think boiling it for an hour is going to make it clean enough for me to want to use.

At least we have our physical safety though. Sorry for the rambling here. I'm just stressed over this whole thing.

I'm so sorry to hear this...a lot of my extended family lives by you, in Franklin. I haven't heard much about the damage, but I'll get to see things first hand as I am flying out next week for my cousin's wedding.

I hope life gets back to normal for everyone soon.

I'm fairly close to Franklin actually....I mean, I know I'm lucky where I am (I seriously have NO worries), and my parents and grandparents use well water (I'm way out of the water affected area) so they're fine...I hope you get water back soon chell! That stinks about all the cleaning supplies, I'm sure you're having to use a ton of it...It just never really occurred to me that it would get up in people's houses around here. It's so uncommon. My grandmother said there's only been one flood this bad in her lifetime in the Asheville area...

My dad just told me the paper mill is likely to not reopen-they were barely afloat as it was and they're not sure if it's going to make it this time...

Hope the plant can make it. Maybe they will get some assistance.

My water damage came from a bad roof. The ceiling has to be replaced in two rooms and the carpet may also have to be replaced.

My area had over 17 inches of rain in just 2 days.

The kids have been out of school since Wed. The roads here in the mountains are terrible. Bridges were washed away. They still have not decided whether to have school next week. The bad thing is last winter we missed 17 days of school due to snow, now with the roads so bad we are really worried about winter coming.

2 of the teachers where I live lost everything. One was in her house and the house started sliding down the mountain. She and her kids had to kick the windows out to get out of the house. Now, her insurance company wont pay anything because they did not have FLOOD insurance! She is not allowed in her house because it is too dangerous. I feel so sorry for her. The other teacher lost everything also and the dont have flood insurance. Now who would have ever thought the MOUNTAINS needed flood insurance.

It is just so sad.

  How in the world can they say it's a flood when the house slid DOWN the mountain?? Insurance companies really push my buttons.

I'll be saying a prayer for all of here and your friends.

 Wow! Even in Asheville! I used to work for Kearfott Guidance & Navigation Corp. in NJ. I know they had a facility in Asheville...Black Mountain? Don't know if they are still there or not. I still miss that company!

Blessings to you and all in your area affected. :( <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/17/17_1_10.gif' alt='Prayer' border=0></a> <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/17/17_1_10.gif' alt='Prayer' border=0></a> <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/17/17_1_10.gif' alt='Prayer' border=0></a>

Cati...That is unbelievable! Both what happened and the insurance companies!

I've seen it on the news & it looks awful. I'm in Burlington, about 2-3 hours away, Wednesday looked awful here. I was so afraid we were gonna have a tornado. DS said they practiced drills in school. P & PD to all of you in the western part of the state.

:grouphug:

Sorry to hear about all the damage Frances has caused in NC, too! I have family in Burlington. Better check in with them to make sure they are okay! I actually missed my uncle's funeral there because of Charley!

My heart goes out to all of you! I will continue to pray for everyone there!

Jodi

I hadn't heard anything about NC.
I'm so sorry.
I hope Fema or someone steps in and helps all those affected there.
I hope conditions there improve very soon.

My heart goes out to you.

Yep, they are in Black Mountain and they are still there. But I bet they had some damage from the floods since the river runs right behind their plant. It is just down the road from where I work.

luvindisneyworld - I'm in Black Mountain.

cati - I had heard it was bad over your way too. Hopefully someone will step in and help those families out. Your area tends to flood more often that this area does. I've never understood that one.
