Here in WNC, I hadn't really realized the effects of all of our rain from dear old Frances until watching the news tonight. The downtown area of the small town where I grew up (it's right next to the river) was completely flooded, but is getting better. Asheville had HUGE water problems from it and hoped to have them fixed today, but it got MUCH worse, and people for the most part still don't have water, and if they do, they have to boil it. All restaurants are closed, as well as the beautiful Grove Park Inn (2nd largest employer in the area). A local high school's football field, that they took tremendous pride in, is destroyed. It can be repaired, but not this season. A small river overflowed, causing a landslide. The dirt came out from under the homes, making the houses land on cars, vans, etc....but none are still in one piece there. It's just very sad...I know that it's nothing compared to Florida's horrible problems, but this had HUGE effects, even in the NC mountains, which rarely see this kind of problems. On a positive note-The Mountain State Fair is a go, and opens tonight. I hope everyone that goes has a safe and fun time. Sorry so long, I'm just in shock at the suffering even in this area....
