Because I appreciate the efforts of others that have written trip reports (they are both inspiring and informational) I have decided to take a stab at writing one myself with a small pre-trip to start. Those that have come before me have left some pretty big shoes to fill but I will endeavor do my best.
First lets take a look at the players. In my family we have what we refer to as non-related relatives. Friends so close that they are considered family. I explain this only because I am not actually related to any of these fellow travelers and it will help you understand one very shocking fact. You may want to sit down before reading this. My nephew (age 9) had never heard of Disneyland until I told him about it last year.
No blood relative of mine would be unaware of the Happiest Place on Earth.
So here is a picture of my nephew Benj on a camping trip last summer. The inspiration for this trip.
This is our little group, starting with me:
Kay (age 48, 20+ trips to Disneyland)
Sandy (age 45, 5 trips)
Kerin (age 48, 0 trips)
Randi (age 47, 0 trips)
Benj (age 9, 0 trips)
My mother grew up in Norwalk, Ca, married my dad (he was in the Navy at the time) and followed him back to his home in Washington. We drove down to see moms family almost every year growing up so Disneyland was a big part of my youth. I have two adult children that we took several times when they were kids and then when they got bored with Disneyland I started taken nieces & nephews. I understand that to many this will sound surprising but after my last trip to Disneyland in December 2002 I, like my kids, became completely bored with Disneyland. I was kind of sad at the time because it had always brought such joy. I decided to take some time off and do some cruising (which I love) for a few years. It worked. After 6 years I started missing Disney.
I am an over planner and find spending an entire year working out all the details to be ½ the fun. I am pretty good at it and can happily go with the flow if things dont work out the way I hoped they would. A little over a year ago, about the time I found out Benj had never heard of Disneyland, I decided that it was time to plan the next trip. Within days I had set the date and called to invite Benj and my sisters.
I have created a trip planning binder, read the Unofficial Guide to Disneyland 2009 & Birnbaum's Disneyland 2008, and spent far too many hours here on DisBoards. I made hotel reservations at HoJos last August and ordered all my tickets and transfers a few months ago. Now all that is left is to put together my LGMHs, do a little shopping, and pack.
I have read many times over the last year of several Disers who were excited to see but to shy to approach other Disers with LGMHs proudly displayed at Disneyland. Trust me when I say that if you see me I welcome an introduction and on the flip side, if I see any of you I will come and say hi.
The current plan is to spend 5 ½ days in the parks and take one day to go to SeaWorld. I am not quite as young as I used to be so I intend on slowing down my typical commando pace this trip. Of course I say that now but the minute I cross under the train tracks all I want to do is sprint to the nearest ride. Yes, I know that you should not run in the parks but I still think about it every time.
I have to say that I am getting pretty excited because there are several new attractions that I have never seen. Monsters Inc, Toy Story Mania, Pirates Lair, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, Pixie Hollow, Finding Nemo, and TOT were all added after my last trip.
OK. Time to hit the laundry so that's all for now.
