This year, my HS marching band is doing Cirque du Soleil! We have 5 songs this year. Last year we had 3, but only performed 2 during halftime shows. We did all 3 at festivals of course. I am really excited! It should be a good year. Of course we are having issues with our captain, so it should be an interesting year to say the least!

Do any of you band "geeks" (I'm one too, so no offense to anyone) or band parents know what your band is doing for your show this coming season?

This will be our first official year as band parents, our DS13 starts his freshman year marching this summer. I don't know what the show is or the music. We are pretty excited. Our current town has a pretty strong marching program and we wanted to find a town that had a good one so our new town has an even better program. They won every competition they were in and took 8th in the regionals, their first time going to regionals.

Thats cool! This was my first year in band, even though I am a sophomore (this will be my second year coming up and I will be a junior). I loved it. No matter how much we (and I'm talking about the color guard) complain and fight with eachother, I think we really do love every aspect of it (well of course with the exception of the drama, which usually seems to involve our current captain in one way, shape, or form, but thats a whole other story  However, if you really want to know....JKJK). Tell your son to have fun! We put in so much work, but in the end, I really think it is worth it.

Oh Simba! I've heard a rumor that DS's band is doing Cirque De Soleil! Woudln't that be a hoot if it was the same show? His band is large, 200 marching, and usually do shows that are technically very difficult. Does this sound like the same show ya'll might be doing? That would be wild! I think we will find out May 22nd! Oh the wait!! Now remember, it's just a rumor! :cheer2:

I guess I'm going to be a "double" band mom this year - DS16 (trumpet) will be in his 4th year of marching band, and DS14 (bari sax) has finally decided to join. The theme of our show hasn't been officially decided, but last I heard the band director was seriously considering doing the music from The Incredibles. I guess the guard uniforms will be red jumpsuits with a yellow "i" in the middle???? First summer rehearsal is June 3, so we should be getting the music soon.

Simba, what school district are you? We're Gateway. Will we see you at any competitions this year?

MinnieM3: Very cool! I'm not sure of the exact songs we are doing. It started out as a rumor way back at band camp of this past season. Actually, there were two rumors, one that we were doing Phantom of the Opera and another that we were doing this. Then Phantom died out, but Cirque was still going strong. At the band meeting last week, our director announced that it will be Cirque. A couple friends of mine are working on him to get Phantom our senior year. We do difficult music. Last year our show was Karn Evil 9, Handbags and Gladrags, and Come Sail Away (the South Park version allthough we didn't tell our audience that.) LOL.

Amy: That would be very cool to do the Incredibles. We watched that movie on our band trip to Florida. Actually it was coming home and I fell asleep within the first 20 minutes. Then I woke up again about half way through and was completely lost,l so I tried to follow for about 10 minutes then gave up and went back to sleep. LOL. You guys start your rehearsals early! Guard tryouts are at the end of May, but practices don't start until mid July and that first week is for guard only. We don't do competitions, but if I find out we will be at a festival with you guys, I will def. let you know! That would be very cool!

Our current town's band did Phantom many years ago, it is STILL my favorite show they have done. At one point in the show they had the color guard doing some big deal thing, mainly a distraction, then on a loud note from the band, a girl was hoisted up on a board and did a short ballet dance (we have an EXCELLENT ballet school in town so that helps too). It was so cool!

I know our bands show last year was called Reflections and Revolutions but I can't remember the music. They actually try to stay away from show tunes now because they don't seem to score as well around here.

I'm such a HUGE Phantom fan now! (obviously!) but I doubt they will do that! Good luck with that for Senior year!

Last year the show was called Equilibrium and included all classical type stuff... Epiphany, (by Respighi) Medea- Dance of Vengence (by Samuel Barber), and Oh Magnum Mysterium (by I have no idea). It was a fabulous show! Sigh!! :woohoo:

golfgal: That would be very cool! A friend of mine was describing a show that she saw. She said they were doing Phantom. All of a sudden, the guard ran to the back corner and the pulled a huge black sheet and ran it over the band. She said it was very cool. We could never do that though. It would be too difficult for our band to grasp the concept of grabbing a cloth and pulling it. LOL.

MinnieM3: Very cool! I think it would be a good show if we did Phantom. This year I thought it would be cool to do Fantamsic, especially since we had a band trip to Disney earlier.

Wow, that's so cool that you're doing something Disney related! We were band parents (including chaperoning many events) for 4 years. One year, DS got an award for most dedicated, showing leadership, etc. He was so proud, he said "Look, Mom-I got 'Band Geek of the Year!'" To him, like you, being a band geek was something to be proud of. Now he's in college pursuing music performance. His marching band days are behind him, but we all enjoyed it so much. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of any of his shows, but I'll have to ask him. Good luck!

Well, simba928, it sounds like ya'll have a great show for the year! I can only imagine some of the vibrant colors you can use. (I loved La Nouba when we saw it in 2003.)

DS will be in 9th grade next fall and will be doing his second band season. The school he attends is quite small...only about 60 tops in the marching band. They don't do a lot of field shows other than halftime and a few competitions, but they put on a great show. The last year DS did band he was in 7th grade and they did a rock 'n' roll show...Let's Dance by David Bowie, Back in Black by AC-DC, Iron Man by Ozzie Osburn's old band, and House of the Rising Sun. It was a great show! It got everybody up and moving. This past year the show had a Latin Jazz theme...so last decade according to DS's private music teacher. (Since DS had some conflicts with the director he sat out from marching. I posted on this back when it happened since it had me so frustrated.) Besides, marching isn't required for 7th and 8th grades, but if they want those kids can march with the high school band. Well, next season's show is "The Blues Brothers", which DS is hyped about...he really likes that music and can visualize a good field show with it. So, we'll see. The band had it's first "pre-camp" last Saturday...trying to teach the new kids how to march to start with then working with the music. I've told DS that since we're heading to DL and they have a House of Blues, we'll have to get some HOB shades and attire for him.

I think it'll be a good season...I just hope the kids have fun!
