Found out some intresting information about Canadian Passport rules

Well this Canadian is flying from PWM to MCO thru JFK because prices from YFC or YQM or YHZ ... were N-U-T-S! :)

I guess we were lucky. I got airfare for 139.00 each, each way. Ottawa-Toronto-Orlando. with taxes it came to 1571.00 that was for Dec 19-31

I'm not an expert on this but I think the excerpt that Calgarygary quoted above is a bit misleading and should probably have included more of the text from the U.S. website:

The way I read it, the general rule is that a non-U.S. citizen seeking entry to the United States must have both a visa and a passport that does not expire within 6 months. However, as noted under the heading "Entry of Citizens of Canada", Canadian citizens are exempt from the general visa and passport requirements and only need to provide adequate proof of Canadian citizenship. (As we all know, Canadian citizens do not need to a visa to enter the U.S. Therefore, that first paragraph in the excerpt was clearly a statement of the general rule.) In other words, this U.S. government website appears to confirm that Canadian citizens don't need to worry about a passport that is due to expire within 6 months of entry to the U.S.

I deliberately quoted only the passport part as the OP stated they would be flying and passports would be necessary. You do not want to leave yourself open to a government employee's interpretation of the statute.

I spoke to a very well placed person in the Canadian passport office today (a good friend) and the indication she gave was thus:

Traveling to a foreign country - like say Italy in particular - they want your passport to be good for at least 6 months following the date of your planned departure from the foreign territory to your home.

Traveling to the United States, they are much more lenient and if your passport was around the five or six month mark from expiration that shouldn't pose any problem. In her experience the U.S. doesn't require the 6 month *exactly* rule of Canadians.

Should you find yourself in a situation where your passport is three months or less from expiration and you plan a trip, you should definitely get it replaced before traveling regardless of your destination.

No matter what your destination, if the duration of the trip is longer than the validity of your passport that WILL pose a problem upon arriving at a border or point of entry where a valid passport is required.

She went on to explain that if you are able, replacing your passport at the 6 month mark is the best idea to minimize any problems. Given the now easier and expedited passport renewal process (no guarantor required for most renewals now) that this process is better than in the past.

Hope this helps,

My Dad and I were told the same thing from the person who processed our applications. When we mentioned the 6 month rule he thought we were going to Isreal next month, so obviously that is another country where you're Passport needs to be good for at least 6 months following the date of your planned departure from the foreign territory to your home. He also said the United States does not have that strict of a rule when it comes to Canadians going there.

Another interesting thing you should know about passports that if you are a Multiple (twin/triplet etc) LET THEM KNOW...my twin and I threw them off guard at the passport office and they told us one of them might have got rejected cause the pictures were similar and we had the same birthdate.

Wow! I never thought about that! You learn something new every day! :teacher:

I've also heard the "6 month rule" and we since want to do an "all inclusive" this winter and being that our passports are expired Feb/Mar we'll be heading into Hamilton to get the renewel. I wouldn't be too worried when travelling to the US but I do worry about The Dominican,Cuba Mexico, etc.:)

Two or three years ago, we were driving from Vancouver to Seattle. My friend had 4 months left on her passport, and we were denied entry to the US, because her Canadian Passport did not meet US entry requirements.

The boarder guard advised her that her passport must be valid for at least 6 months after our expected departure from the US (not our arrival into the US). He also told her that it does't matter what the Canadian Passport Office informed, the Canadian Passport Office has no control over entry and entry requirements into the US.

At the time if she had just showed her driver's license and birth certificate we would have been allowed entry, but because she had already shown her passport we were made to turn around and drive back into Canada.

We've always made sure our passports our valid for more than 6 months where ever we travel now. Getting turned back at the land border, less than an hour from home, is inconvenient. But getting denied entry to a country after a 5 hour flight, would really suck.

The day after my Dad and I went to the Passport office the next day he had go to Buffalo and he told us at the border he showed them his photo id and birth certificate. Then he showed his old Passport, even though it is stamped cancelled and the part of the pages were cut up and he had no problems getting in despite the fact that the Passport says it was cancelled.
