Found old safe in my basement

What a neat find!

We had a safe similar to that in our restaurant many years ago! When Dad and I went out of town some kids broke in and tried to get into the safe by knocking the knob off. You know in the movies you pop them once with a hammer and the door just springs open with all that gold behind the door!

Well, anyway, Mom called to tell us they couldn't hardly stand to be inside the restaurant for a day or two because behind the knob was a canister of tear gas. We could smell it a week later when we returned!

No, they didn't get in the safe. I guess the tear gas ran them out! :lmao:

 :yay: :woohoo:

How cool is this story????? VERY!
I too am waiting for the grand opening. maybe you should tape it and put it on YOUTUBE!!!!!!!!!

Ok - I've read all 14 pages and am subscribing to find out what in the heck is in that safe.:surfweb:

Oh my gosh this is the best thread ever! Except now I'm completely hookedpopcorn::

Sending lots of pixie dust that you can get into it and find something really cool :wizard:

What an awesome find, and it sure it beautiful. Here's to hoping you find something great in it.

You added new info! So it seems it is older than suspected. I wonder what all the different dates on the lock indicate. It really is so interesting.
I was looking at some of the old safes around that size and some were 5,500 lbs. No wonder it remained when the owners left. I hope you can track some history.:)

I read about a college that had one of these safes and the combination was lost in the 1970's. They called in a Locksmith or 4! and after many hours of trying to crack the combination they gave up and resorted to brute force with crow bars and other tools and even then it was VERY hard work to get that safe open. Some are even dynamite proof.

Keep us posted with any new findings!:thumbsup2

just saw this thread tonite.. Holy Cow.. this is sooo cool.. .

I wish the OP the very best in her discovery of the contents of the fabulous mysterious safe!

What an exciting discovery! Hopefully there will be something great inside, but even if iit's empty inside, you have an awesome piece of history.

Oh my gosh!! Look at you go!! I live about an hour out of Rochester in a small village of Newark. So I would really like to find someone closer so they won't charge me as much (travel time). But if it comes to it and I can't find someone, I will call Rochester.

Thank you so much!!!

I was 7 pages into this thread and never realized you were from (near) Rochester until this post! This is now so much more interesting to me! I'm dying to know what's in it!

While living in Virginia, we bought a house in 1992. It was in one of those cookie cutter WW2 neighborhoods. A few years after buying it we gutted the bathroom to find the toilet paper holder was held in the wall with a big piece of cement wrapped in newspaper. We carefully broke the cement from the newspaper to find a wealth of info in it (the newspaper). The history it contained was fantastic! 1942. One of the interesting things (besides all the happenings of the war) was a small article about a tiger. The story was from Auburn, Washington. I lived there as a child. Small world. Anyway, the newspaper contained those old phone numbers with letters. There was a coupon for car undercoating for $20. Sports contained a story about Joe Louis. Front page was Winston Churchill.

I have the newspaper carefully tucked away. :goodvibes

Hmmm.. never mind. Tried to repost that cool old Dr. Pepper can, but it didn't work for me either. :confused3

Very cool safe! I want to know what is in it too. Even if it is empty, the stories you can tell about finding it will be cool.

I have my husband down in the basement right now trying to answer some of the questions that were asked earlier. I say they are acorns, but they just look like a finial, maybe acorn shape. They are smooth, not etched like an acorn though.

I had to go to a b-day party tonight and I was telling all of the people there and the excitement it created!! I think I could have had 15 people come home with me and help me demolish the thing!! Guys were offering to buy some beer/wine and snacks and stay till the damage was done!!! Too funny. As soon as my husband comes back upstairs with some anwers (hopefully) I will post.

Good morning Im back for another day of waiting! I love this idea...Free Labor and give them like 1% cut, Im sure everyone is this happy to be apart of it!
