Fort Wilderness

We just made reservations last night for Fort Wilderness in April of 2008! It will be me, DH, DS16, DS 13 and my DM.

Our question is.. what did you take that you did not need/use, what did you not take that you had to purchase or jsut wish you had?

We have read it is rather dark, would a nightlight be a good idea? Or sometimes we leave the bathroom door open a little.

if I remember the bathroom is in the hall

since you are using both the bed and bunks beds and the murphy bed - I might take several.

one for your room - the hall has the bathrooom and one for the living room - where the murphy bed is located.

Congratulations on your reservation. I think you will love Fort Wilderness!!!
It is a great place to be. From your post I am assuming that you reserved a Cabin. Is that correct?
I can't think of anything specific or unusual that you would need to take. The cabins are fully equipped - even with cookware, pots and pans, dishes etc. If you would use a nightlight in a hotel room I would bring it, if not then I wouldn't. Think of it as a super charged hotel room,

Yes we did rent/make the reservation for a cabin. We are very much looking forward to this trip. It will most likely be the last family trip for several years.

Oldest DS will be a sophmore this year and next year he is already in the planning stages to take another school trip in his Jr. year then his Sr. year he is planning on going with the school to Spain

Glad he has got the travel bug, wonder who it got it from??

Although I do not care about cooking much, DM will want to, where did you get your supplies? We are driving so we could just stop on our way in.

If you haven't found it already, there is a whole "Camping" subforum here where all the Fort Wilderness experts post.

We stayed in the cabins quite a bit as kids and they are still my mom's favorite. They are fully equipped, but there are also stores in the campground, but predictably, everything is overpriced. if you can stop at an off propert grocery store you will do better cost-wise.

Don't miss the special stuff at FW! There are campfire programs, trail rides, hayrides. If either of your boys like horses they can see the stables where they keep some of the Disney horses and if you aren't on the dining plan I have heard the resteraunt is a good value.

Take flashlights. There's not that much outside light for walking around. I went to the dollar store and got a couple of cheapos - two for $1. Make sure you put batteries in them before you leave.

Take matches or a lighter with you. It was not a good idea for us to plan a cookout on the grill and not have matches!!

Take insect repellant. I sat on the deck in the morning waiting for everyone else to get up and needed the repellant then.

If you plan to cook, take Ziplocs. Actually, Ziplocs have dozens of uses at Disney World so they are a must for any trip.

I'm not sure if these have been upgraded but we took a couple of VCR tapes since there was a playonly VCR in the cabin. Helped to get our granddaughter to sleep at night.

We did take a nightlight but only because our granddaughter claimed she was scared of the dark. We turned it off after she was asleep and didn't need anything else.

Mostly grocery type stuff. Salt, pepper, sugar, coffee & coffee filters if their's won't be what you want or not enough, ziplocks, aluminum foil... I guess it depends on how much cooking you intend on doing in the cabin. There's a bbq grill, too, so ask the chef what he needs for that if you want to cook out.

There's a VCR/TV combo in the living room, so bring some tapes for the kids if you like.

There's no tv in the bedroom which I find annoying, but hubby brought his laptop last time we stayed there, and we watched some dvd's in bed on that.

There's only one hairdryer, in the bedroom, so bring one for the bathroom if you don't want everyone in and out of your room drying their hair.
