Here is an excerpt from an article by Joe Mariani, maybe it will shed some light for you."

Here's a light that is perhaps a little clearer....

Don't Credit Reagan for Ending the Cold War
by Stephen Zunes
Perhaps the most dangerous myth regarding the legacy of the late President Ronald Reagan is that he was somehow responsible for the end of the Cold War.

The Soviet Union and its Communist allies in Eastern Europe collapsed primarily because their governments and economies rested upon an inherently unworkable system that would have fallen apart anyway.

And they were doomed in part because they fell victim to pro-democracy movements.

Totalitarian systems cannot survive without being able to control access to information. Cracks in the system were becoming apparent as early as the 1970s.

In a December 2003 interview, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev said the fall of the Soviet Union had nothing to do with the arms race. "When it became clear to us that the one-party model was mistaken, we rejected that model," he said. "A new generation of more educated people started to be active. Then society required freedom, society demanded freedom."

It was not Reagan's military buildup or bellicose threats against the Soviets and their allies that brought down the system. Instead, such threats possibly allowed these regimes to hold on to power even longer as people rallied to support the government in the face of the perceived American threat.

High Soviet military spending, in part as a reaction to the U.S. military buildup that began in the latter half of the Carter administration, certainly hurt the Soviet economy -- as it did (and is still doing) to ours. But the reality is that it was the people themselves who brought down the system.

The most significant case was Poland, where -- even before Reagan became president -- the communist regime was forced to recognize the independent trade-union movement Solidarity. This helped expose the lie that the communist governments were "workers' states."

Despite the Polish regime's decision to ban Solidarity at the end of 1981, pro-democracy Poles continued to organize, as did dissidents in Czechoslovakia, Hungary, East Germany, the Baltic states and elsewhere. Many of these democratic leaders were openly skeptical of Reagan administration policies. Dissident Czech playwright and later president, Vaclav Havel, when asked about Western influences on his movement, replied that he had been more inspired by musicians John Lennon and Frank Zappa than by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan.

Reagan's verbal support for democracy had little credibility in many of these countries. For example, while he denounced Poland's martial law regime, he was a strong supporter of the more repressive martial law regime then in power in Turkey, a NATO ally.

In challenging left-wing governments in the Third World, Reagan backed insurgents with ties to U.S.-backed dictatorships, and, in the case of Afghanistan, even Islamic fundamentalists.

While Reagan was certainly capable of inspirational leadership, idealism and personal charm, the myth that he is responsible for the downfall of Communism and the end of the Cold War does a disservice to the millions of Eastern Europeans and others who struggled against great odds for their freedom.

It was not American militarism, but massive nonviolent action -- including strikes, boycotts, mass demonstrations and other forms of ingenious noncooperation -- that finally brought down these communist regimes.

So stop this impeachment talk it makes everyone sick!!.

The impeachment will never happen, but it certainly doesn't make everyone sick. Stop speaking for everyone ;)

51% of Americans did vote for him more than either time voted for Clinton

51% of voting Americans. Not Americans as a whole.

During 40 plus years of being in the minority we never even complained half as much as the garbage that is going on right now. :

They have every reason to complain. Look at whats happening. The repugs have power now and are trying to change the rules so it can continue to hold power.

It's not about lives, of course, but lifestyle.

I can see why you side with Reagan. God's curse, right?

Unfortunately, AIDS is often spread by the deliberate actions of the infected.

Well then, they deserve to die, right?

Pathetic and sad.

That was an excerpt from JOE MARIANI's article. The last part wasn't too sweet of him but I thought I should include it since he did write it. :wave2:

Why would you even post the thoughts of that right winger? When debating, its best to post something neutral....

Oh PLEASE!!! Stephen Zunes is neutral?! :rotfl2:

I think this will SLAM DUNK your assertion that he did nothing for AIDS....

Reagan and AIDS

Hardly, he fought Congress tooth and nail on AIDS funding. What was spent was in spite of him, not because of him.

Yet Reagan continued to clash with lawmakers and activists on his AIDS policies. According to press reports Reagan requested $85 million in 1986 for AIDS research, but Congress bumped that figure up to $244 million. Reagan unsuccessfully tried to rescind $50 million of that figure, according to the Boston Globe, but he ultimately agreed to Congress' figure. At the time the Globe reported that AIDS patients were dying at a rate of about 80 per week.

Hey! Mental Giant!

Gee, was it you who was just whining about being hateful and insulting a few posts ago? Perhaps, being as bright as you apparently are, you think the rules apply to everyone but you.

But, oh wise one, I assumed from your own words that you agreed with the post. Surely if you didn't you wouldn't choose to use such a hate filled article to bolster your position.

I see you ran back to edit your insults to me. I just love hit and run posts.

.....He (Reagan) increased our military budget, forcing the USSR to increase its own military spending to match. In fact, given the 28.3% increase in the Gross Domestic Product during the 1980's, the overall increase in military spending as a percentage of the GDP only increased by .6% during Reagan's term, though it nearly doubled in dollar amount from $158 billion to $304 billion (in 1987 dollars). To the Soviet economy, however, a drastic increase in spending was unsustainable, and Reagan's proposed anti-ballistic missile defense system (Strategic Defense Initiative) which was a death-blow. The USSR could never hope to match it. The moment that Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev insisted that SDI research be stopped at the summit in Reykjavik, and Reagan walked away from the table, the Soviet Union was doomed. The critics may have a point--if we had just waited another fifty or a hundred years, the Soviet Union may well have suffered an economic collapse. At what cost? During that time billions of people would have lived out their lives in fear and virtual slavery, and no one can tell how many would have died in its death throes. No collapsing government has ever gone quietly onto ''the ash heap of history'' of its own volition.

And Communist Russia needed to be defeated--totalitarian governments which rob their citizens of life, liberty, and the freedom to pursue happiness are the antithesis of what America is all about. We are by nature--or ought to be--opposed to such regimes.

Though there were and still are other oppressive governments in the world, Ronald Reagan defeated the chief of them all, the one that funded and fueled so many others. ..............

Best source you could come up with, huh?
