Former Lasagne Lovers Meet Here!!!

Well then, get off the internet and call a medical health professional to handle this person or you will then have some responsibility if anything does happen.

:scared: Jeez. I didn't realize they appointed thread monitors here now.

I'm just curious about this disorder. This is a good topic to discuss.

I happen to know of someone who was taking on the persona of other people 'for fun' - so they say :confused3. However, I think that there may be some serious underlying condition that may have caused the person to do this. I'm really not sure. This person could possibly be a danger to others. I'm seriously concerned.

Oh my gosh Mahna!

I will pray for them too! Prayers said and will continue.

Who knew! Anyhoo -- I don't understand why we can't discuss mental illnesses -- they are not a topic that is barred for discussion. People discuss personal & medical problems all the time on the CB. :confused3 If someone doesn't want to discuss the issue - they are not obliged to nor do they have to click on this thread.

Feels like high school all over again but then again, identity theft on the internet is serious adult stuff and should be treated as such.

You are correct. Adoption of a person's identity and malicious use of the same on a message or chat board is cyber stalking/harassment and is punishable as a criminal offense. Civil liability is also available. This is not a funny issue.

I read somewhere that online ID theft is the fastest growing ID crime. :sad2:

It's a shame, really.

Oh, do tell. I hear it's an awfully high standard to beat (I'm guesing you know this, of course), particularly when someone doesn't own the name by copyright or TM. Do you think they paid to copyright their name? It's fairly cheap to register a name with the government (about $500) but that seems a lot of work just to have a special name on the internet. And they'd have to show some damages? You know, damage to their reputation, that sort of thing. Of course there's really no case law on this yet. This is fascinating. I'd love to hear more.

Woke up, did you?

i'm almost always awake, what with my schedule and all...but there's just...

I specifically said it is a form of harassment to use someone else's identity on a messageboard. WTH are you talking about? It really appears that you are on a totally different page than I am on talking about copyright names. Last I knew, I had no idea one had to copyright their birthname re: internet stalking. I don't think that is the case. This is very new area of law which is developing every day. An advocate could make a very good case of harassment based on the use of a person's identity on a site which they have been known to frequent or there is a causal relationship to the site. Damages - not needed for a criminal case. Civil case: yes, more difficult to prove - emotional distress, etc. Will it require proof by an expert witness? Maybe. Who knows- I've seen civil juries return insane verdicts. I think this is an exciting area of the law that will develop much more in the coming years.

But back to your comments, I'd really love to know what you are talking about because it sounds so interesting -- do tell.

You seem upset. Why is that?

Not upset at all- you placed words to my post which weren't there. I'm still wondering what the heck you were talking about by your comments. You quoted me - not the other way around. Just wonderin'

And I certainly appreciate, Darling. What a warm inviting place you have around here. And so Christian. And can't help but wonder what the good Lord would think.

You take care.

did i hear my name?

i'm not sure what's going on here, but i think what we have is a failure to communicate appropriately...on other boards...using one's own name instead of somebody else's name. i'm just guessing here; let's keep that in mind.

and i believe that we have an actual practicing attorney on this thread. not sure about that either, but i think so.

my feeling is that if people behave appropriately and cease participating in destructive...and it sounds like illegal...activities, all will be good.
