Sailing on the Fantasy in March - this is our first cruise. No one in the family likes to dress up so were wondering how formal formal night is. Everyone dresses up for dinner in the MDR?

While the second night of the cruise (generally) is designated as "formal" there is no actual dress code in the MDR beyond "no swimwear or tank tops for dinner". You'll see all manner of dress for dinner, even on formal nights, from gowns and tiaras to shorts and flip-flops.

Thanks for the info. It would not be easy to convince the guys to wear suits and ties on vacation. Cruise casual is fine by us but we really dislike dressing formally especially on vacation.

You will see all forms of dress on formal night. By no means do you have to dress in formal attire and you will not be the only ones.

In our experience many people do dress up on formal night/semi-formal night, even if it is khakis and a polo. I would guess most dress up somewhat.

I agree, many do dress up. But there are those that don't.

Sorry to interrupt... which night is the captain's gala where the Captain and his senior staff are all dressed up in the atrium? I have a feeling it's formal night but I'm not certain.

Usually it's semi-formal night (night 6) of the 7 night cruises.

Sorry, my fault... I'd remembered the name wrong. I just remember talking photos with the captain and his senior officers whilst I was in my formal dress in the atrium. I've just checked the navigators and I meant the Captain's Reception - that's where we had official Captain photos.

Lot of people dress up, and the atmosphere in the atrium is to die for. Formal dress for ships officers, elegant music, people mingling, several formal portrait settings, reminiscent of the classic sailing days.

Lot of people don't dress up, they just dress casually.

It doesn't matter. Enjoy what you want to enjoy, and you'll feel quite at ease both ways.

Our experience after 2 Fantasy cruises is that MAYBE half the people dress "up" while 1/2 don't.

Tux and gowns--while there--were NOT very common.

I wore a polo and slacks and was quite comfortable in the MDR on formal night.

As others have said some do just wear a polo and slacks for men and some women just wear casual/maxi dresses. I like to dress up so I wear a cocktail dress just about every night (even pirate night). I put my DS in a polo and khakis because that is how my DH likes to dress. Hope this helps.

The one time we cruised 2 yrs ago we felt out of place the night of the Golden Mickey's because we didn't dress up. It looked like we were the odd ones out. I had decided on being comfortable in nice jeans, nice top, dressy shoes, & jewelry & wish I would have really dressed up. If you have room to pack dress up clothes I suggest you do & based on the atmosphere of your cruise you can decide if you want to wear the stuff or not.

Everyone told me before we cruised that plenty of people won't dress up & we won't be the only ones. On our cruise we were certainly in a very small minority.
