I am filing an amended tax return for the first time because I received a 1099 for 700 dollars we received that I didnt know I had coming. Do I include a copy of my original return in with the 1040x, or just the 1099 that I didnt submit or account for originally? Also the IRS increased my original return by 800 dollars cause I had neglected to take the making work pay credit or whatever that was...so should I put that letter in there too? Also I was able to increase my standard deduction on my original return by 1000 dollars do to that new property tax thing, but when the 1040x tells you to write your deduction in they dont talk about that in the instructions. Thanks for any help you can give:)

Just send the form and the new 1099. There is a place on the form for an explanation of why the amendment. I wouldn't worry about the making work pay thing, they already have that. We had to file an amended form this year and that is what our accountant did.

On the Form 1040-X you only have to explain why the change was made. You only have to attached forms or schedules that were changed, but not the new 1040 itself.

Two important notes.

1. If you had itemized and had deductible medical expenses or miscellaneous expenses subject to the floor you will have to change the amount of the deductions because of the change in AGI.

2. On the lines for Credits include the adjustment IRS made, as well as include that in the original refund amount line.
