I totally messed up and didn't realize you couldn't add trip insurance on after your trip is paid in full! I'm so nervous with 2 kids that someone will get mid trip...especially covid. Does anyone have any other good companies I can try? If someone gets covid mid trip I have no idea what we would do. Thanks!

Check out third-party trip insurance comparison sites -- Google it. Usually the first couple of links are very popular sites that will compare various plans based on your inputs.

We use Allianz for all our trips. We had a claim once with them, they sent us a check within two weeks.

I never do trip insurance for domestic vacations. WDW is pretty lenient on cancellation policies, or at least pushing out the date, and our medical plan covers us in FL; I would just need to deal with airlines. However, it depends on your purpose for buying the insurance. If you are looking at it for medical because someone gets sick, check your personal medical insurance policy. If getting medical care in FL would be out-of-network and either not covered or significantly more expensive, trip medical insurance might be worth it. Also, if you are looking for trip interruption to cover additional hotel nights and meals, that might be worth considering depending on your personal circumstances.

More people are getting it due to covid interruptions and then having to potentially quarantine somewhere as one would not be able to fly home. Read the exclusions on the policy, if it’s Not there, u are covered. Insurance is there for what u cannot
Get back, be that in credit or otherwise so knowing what you actually would have out of pocket is important. Good luck n safe travels.

Most trip insurance requires you to purchase it within a very short time (a few days or less) of making the first payment on any part of the vacation you are insuring. This is their way of making sure you pay before you have complete information on the risks of traveling; if everyone waited until it was close to their trip and very clear that they might need trip insurance and then bought it and then used it, these companies would go out of business. So they force you to buy it early and then hope that nothing happens and they keep your premium to cover losses elsewhere.

Even if you had bought trip insurance at the time you booked and paid for the trip, there are so many exclusions these days for COVID as a “known” risk, that many policies would not cover that as a “covered loss”. So if you do buy trip insurance, make very sure you have read the fine print.

This is only true if you want to cover pre-existing conditions or cancel-for-any-reason coverage. General trip insurance can be bought at any time prior to the start of traveling. Any illness or situation that develops after booking and before purchasing the insurance would be "pre-existing" and excluded without that specific clause. So if OP's family tested positive for Covid yesterday, she would not be able to purchase insurance today and submit a claim for it. Similarly, if a hurricane pops up today impacting travel this weekend, one can't purchase insurance today that would cover those expenses. Insurance may cost more the closer you get to the travel date, but for the medical coverage and/or trip interruption coverage that OP wants it can be bought after final payment.

I have found that my credit card company provides it if I paid for the trip with that card. So you might want to check that out. I had to cancel a Disney trip due to a hurricane a couple of years ago and my Chase Sapphire Reserve card gave me a full refund.

Edit: Ok, I guess that one is blocked, not sure why, but there are lots of good third party insurance companies out there, just google trip insurance.

Only other thing to keep in mind, since you're buying trip insurance after the fact, most trip insurance companies will not cover anything they deem to be a pre-existing condition.
