Emu Killed Crossing Busy Jersey Road
Apr 15, 2003 6:34 am US/Eastern
(1010 WINS) ROXBURY, N.J. An emu was killed when it tried to cross a busy Morris County highway and ran into a trailer.
The trailer was being pulled by a sport utility vehicle, which sped off after the flightless bird was hit on Route 80 in Roxbury Township. Authorities said they were hoping to identify the driver, but it was not clear whether the motorist would face any charges.
The SUV was eastbound when it hit the emu, which was standing in the center median area before it went onto the highway around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, state police said.
Emus, which are native to Australia, can grow to be as much as six feet tall and 135 pounds, but details about the bird that was killed were not immediately available.
