(also known as, from DH's eyes, "When will this cruise GET here so she will stop asking me questions!")

So!

I am creeping in the back door since I haven't been here in years. Shhhh, don't tell. :scared:

Quick rundown:

:stir: Me! 26, Disney fanatic, food nut, fairly new vegetarian. I love food. I'm a food scientist. Food food food. (Thankfully I'm healthy size 10 and it's still going down.) Mommy to two lovely cats, 15 year old Whiskey and 1 year old Pixie. OBSESSIVE planner. Must have every detail down. As of this point I have an excel chart with color coded entries of what will be happening when, and what may, for the cruise.

 DH 27, fairly as much a Disney fanatic, not as much a food nut. Goes with the flow. How does this man live life so ... carefree? He's the yang to my yin (or is it the other way around? I know one of those is male and one is female....), and somehow we balance. Computer programmer. He's as much a nut about computers as I am with food.

I remember lots of names here, and I hope you remember me! Long ago and far away I used to spend my hours on the Restaurant board, was a moderator for a while, then life happened. Changed majors in college, was poor for a while, lost my job, was poor for a lot longer, ups and downs of the job hunt. Found a job! Got married to my now DH Mike at a quickie down at the Kissimmee courthouse, and had dinner with a few close family and friends at Jiko after.

Fast forward to March of 2007. We'd been married 5 months, and since I was still a temp at my job, we never had a honeymoon. Over the years and years of having annual passes at WDW, we'd had many a cast member or guest gush to us about DCL, "Oh, you simply MUST go!" And we'd cry back, "Someday!"

I honestly don't remember why we finally started looking at DCL. Maybe since I was hired full time in March 2007 (Minute Maid / Coca-Cola R&D!) and we'd never honeymooned and had a Justice of the Peace wedding? Actually, that must have been it. I, ever the planner, started poking around DCL sites. "Hmmmm, this Castaway Cay place sounds really interesting, people talk about it a lot. And look, here's a cruise with two stops at Castaway Cay AND two stops in Mexico? Score!"

(And on a side note, yes, we are celebrating our honeymoon, and calling it our honeymoon, even though it's two years after we got married. So sue us! We didn't have a wedding, didn't have a reception, the least we can do is have a honeymoon. Late. Whatever. :bride: )

The 9/27/08 Double Dip was booked. We MUST have a verandah, of course, since it's our honeymoon! (some hit-you-over-the-head foreshadowing - this pre-trip report is NOT about the 9/27 DD, as you will see)

Since I didn't know much about Disney cruises, of course, OBSESSIVE planner that I am, I settle down to do some research. I happen upon the trip report of a lovely couple here who had a 7-day booked a ways in the future, but couldn't wait that long, so booked a shorter trip on the Wonder.

Wait a sec.

HONEY!!

Zipped on over to Orbitz, found a Cat12 GTY on a 3-day September Wonder sailing (no kids, no worry about school vacations, woohoo!) for $300/person. Sold! But...a 4-day for only $400/person, including taxes? And there's champagne brunch? Even better! We booked the 2007 Labor Day weekend 4-day Wonder sailing - our "test" cruise. And some more foreshadowing, but my-oh-my are we glad that we did.

April through September went fast. I went vegetarian sometime in there (July) and was nervous about being veg on the cruise. No worries needed! I didn't miss out on a thing. I planned and researched as much as I could. I really should have written down my tips/experiences/etc right after, but of course I didn't.

So here I am, what, 8 months later, trying to remember things. I think I'll try this in condensed form.

(I'll throw in some pictures when I can. Busy week. Having friends over, need to clean, of course need to go to Typhoon Lagoon on Saturday)

Let me start of quickly with the best part. I, the ever-punctual and OBSESSIVE planner, make sure we're at the port early. It's 10am, let us in! Check-in is a breeze. (Boarding Pass #2!!!) We had been upgraded from a Cat12 GTY to a Cat9 with two tiny portholes which I was happy enough about, but eh, two tiny portholes? :( So we said what the hey, and asked when we were checking in. Sure, there's an upgrade to a Cat6 for $600. As we were trying to make this a budget cruise, that was out of the question. We take our materials, sit down, and I start poring over everything while Mike plays Nintendo. Typical Mike. Typical Kathleen.

Boarding starts, and when we get near the front, a lady says, "Mike and Kathleen? Come with me, we've been looking for you." We looked at each other with that "Ohhhhhh shoot what did we do now!" look, but followed the woman. She said that someone told her that we had blonde hair and Mike was wearing a hat? (Brunette here and Mike NEVER wears hats) But she tells us that they needed our room to link some parties together, and would it be ok to upgrade us to a Cat6 for free?

WHAT!

Um, let us think about that for...OF COURSE!! They were apologizing for having to move us! I gave the woman a hug! Grinning like fools, we were led back into the front of the line, took our photos, and we were off.

WE'RE ON A DISNEY CRUISE!!! AND WE HAVE A BALCONY!!!

(of course the first thing after this was being bombarded with the water package sales people, the wine package sales people, and the beer mug sales people. Yes, no, and yes.)

So let me get down to the "condensed" bits, which really won't be.

Wheeling soft-sided coolers are the bomb. Bring trash bags to line it, and fill with ice. Much better than the beverage "cooler"!

When they say that Palo reservations on-board start at 1pm, they are lying. They start earlier. Get there earlier. I waited 45 minutes to make the brunch reservation since they were full online, while Mike sat bored with our carryons.

Our room was 6646, very very aft, with a metal wall on the verandah. Who cares! It's a verandah! For free! (Well, now we did make sure for our honeymoon cruise that we have a plexiglass) This worked well with the "pass off the life jackets and I'll head up to the Sail Away party" bit. Yes, I know, bad Kathleen. Such is life.

The Cadillac Lounge is a very lovely place for a pre-dinner drink. This does not work well on nights when the sea is rough and I, who never gets motion sick, got a little motion sick. Bah.

Nassau is boring on a budget, sad to say.

Triton's is lovely for lunch, do try it at least once. Very relaxing and elegant.

The Rainforest room is RIGHT below the sports deck. What the heck, Disney! Basketballs bouncing on the ceiling while I'm in a heated tile lounger is NOT relaxing.

Palo has no view if you go when it's dark. If you care about a view, make it earlier in the evening! We had an 8pm dinner reservation, when we go again I'm making sure it's as early as possible.

Palo vibrates. Unfortunately we didn't enjoy our dinner as much as we could have because of this.

Sad to say, we hated Serenity Bay. Maybe because we don't have kids, so it's not a "refuge" as it may be for others? Compared to the beaches we grew up near, Serenity Bay was boring. The lunch spot was very good, though - the mango was amazing, and the soft serve was nice. But we were bored by Serenity Bay. We walked around a bit, tried to snorkel on the family beach early (I think we didn't go out far enough), and were generally unimpressed. I've read some others say that Serenity Bay bored them as well. Next time we'll be going to the far end of the family beach to give that a try.

Oh, and Konk Koolers? I'm really hoping that ours were made wrong, since they pretty much tasted and looked just like pina coladas. I've seen some pictures of them that look orange? Ours were pina colada white. Will give them another try.

The brunch at Palo was AWESOME. Another Palo tip - don't sit near the windows during brunch. It is hot as Hades there. Heat+vibration = wanting to get out of there. We had Sean from South Africa both times, and he was excellent. We brought a nice bottle of dry rose Champagne since we wanted to be able to select our own, and he didn't flinch.

The martini tasting was tons of fun, with everyone getting chatty and friendly. We passed on the beer tasting since we figured, hey, we have those beers pretty regularly, nothing new there. But the martini, beer, and I'm assuming tequila tastings are more about socializing than what you're drinking!

The wine tasting was boring and stuffy, and we learned nothing new. Palo vibrates. I wanted to get far, far away from Palo at that point.

There's no lack of food for vegetarians, and the servers and the cruiseline as a whole was very happy to assist me in selecting food that didn't contain meat, chicken broth, etc. I'm very comfortable going back as a veg.

I do not sleep well away from home, and was miserable. This time I am bringing Lunesta, my pillow, my mp3 player speakers, and my quilt. I WILL sleep on this cruise. I tried to take naps every day but failed there as well. Pretty much by the time dinner was over, I was ready to pass out - I feel like I missed out on a lot because of this.

Definitely take advantage of the porters! We didn't know anything about them until one came up and offered his assistance with our bags. We were exhausted, I'd been up since 3am, and paying someone to help us with our luggage sounded wonderful.

Foodwise, a lot of things were unmemorable. Parrot Cay embarkation lunch, unmemorable. Mojito was tasty! What stick out are Triton's lunch, Serenity Bay lunch, Palo dinner (except the gnocchi, made vegetarian...bland, bland, bland. And the WORST tiramisu I have EVER had. Just awful. The panna cotta was delicious, and you may slap me now, we don't like souffle so skipped it), Palo brunch. Other than that, eh. We did go on with the expectation of "catered banquet" food, and that's what we got. Which was fine! We're looking forward to it again!

I'm going to leave this as a placemarker since I'll come back and add more witty tidbits of information.

After our disappointing time at CC, I looked through the rebooking brochures. We talked it over a bit, Mike went to the stateroom to rest, and I waited in

line. My first thought was to book the 12/6/08 Eastern since we 1. liked the day at sea so much, 2. didn't want two days at CC anymore, and 3. had heard that the Yucatan was hit hard by the hurricane. Well, really we thought, ok - let's try to book any Eastern. The 12/6 was our first choice because of Christmas decorations, then the one in Nov, then the one in Oct. So I get to the desk and start chatting with the nice rebooking CM. Ask for the price on the 12/6 Eastern, cat6 - and it ended up being the same price as our September DD Western! Score!! I also picked a mid-to-forward room this time, 6042. We're going at Christmas time! We booked the REAS package as well. I notice that the romantic gift amenity on the website has changed - no frame, just chocolates, robes, and champagne.

We were very, very glad that we did thise cruise though, even with weird motion sickness, both of us getting colds on the last evening, and other random things. Take Emer'gen C for a few weeks before you get onboard!

So fast forward again through Food and Wine Festival, the holidays, winter, spring, and here we are about 7 months out. I've started my cruise box. I did buy Chrismas themed Mickey hands to wave as we leave this time, those are packed. Excel sheet is made, packing and shopping list is being worked on. Exercising and dieting is a go. Passporter right next to me. Every day I bother Mike with a new question, "Hey honey...question about the cruise" and he sighs and rolls his eyes.

So here we go! Hopefully I'll update this as we go, definitely on Aug 23 (105 days out!). Oh, and the best news for now?

We're paid off!!!! It is WONDERFUL seeing that "Balance due: $0.00"

Just an update for having booked Palo and excursions!

I completely changed around Palo dates while I was booking online. Here's our current plan:

Sunday: Palo brunch, 10:30am

Tuesday: Golden Eagle Catamaran excursion, morning. Lunch in Marigot on our own. Orient beach if we have time. Palo dinner, 6:30pm (yes, on Pirate night, since it bored us...)

Wednesday: Morning on our own, maybe Sapphire beach or Coki beach? Still working on that one. Booked the Paradise Point tram, just to have it done.

Thursday: Palo high tea, 3pm - not sure if we'll keep this.

Friday: morning jetskis, 12:30 parasailing. Afternoon, Heads Up Bar!

I'm now hoping for the PLA rotation, to get Lumiere's on formal night and Animator's Palette on semi-formal. We wanted to skip Parrot Cay for a casual evening on Deck 9, so it looks like we *may* be skipping the first night's dining room.

And yes, I haven't added pictures from my first cruise, ack - I may try for that this weekend.

We have our cruise box filling up! I have some nice fruit wines from the Florida fruit wineries, and my dad has offered one of his cellared reds. We've bought some clothes, especially since the end of summer sales are starting. I'm still working hard on the diet and exercise since Food and Wine Festival is coming up!

Just posting another update since I see there's another PTR up!

Since I last posted, we've been through Food and Wine Festival (MAN that went by fast) and my company (Coca Cola) "restructuring" which resulted in the elimination of my job by the end of the year, which we found out about just a couple of weeks ago.

Thankfully the cruise and the stateroom bill was paid off/saved up for. :headache:

We've changed around a few things, doing the Eco Hike on St. John now, canceled high tea.

Our dear friends are going to be checking in our cats every other day so we don't have to put them through the stress of boarding. It's really hard on our older cat, Whiskey, who's 16 years old in February.

We did our Total Wines cruise shopping about a month ago, so what's the final damage for the trip?

1 bottle rose Graham Beck sparkling wine (our wedding champagne!) for Palo brunch - it's special to us or we wouldn't bother bringing it, since they don't have it on board
2 bottles Korbel for morning mimosas in the stateroom
1 bottle mango sparkling wine for .. whenever
3 bottles fruit wine (watermelon, tangelo, and guava - all separate)
1 bottle pinot noir
1 lovely bottle of 1998 Barossa Valley Shiraz that my father gave us
1 bottle Mt. Gay white rum
1 bottle Passoa
1 bottle coconut rum....maybe

Party in stateroom 6042! :drinking1

(one of the bottles is for the pre-trip, at least)

We're 95% packed - have to kick DH's butt to get him to start packing. I warned him that if he didn't start picking out his clothes....there'd be no room left for him!

I also have a nice collection of shoes packed!

Strappy Tevas
2 pairs of "thong" Crocs
1 white dress heel
1 black dress heel
1 black pumps
2 pairs dressy sandals

Is that enough? I think I'm forgetting something.

Since my job ends on Dec 31, I'm trying to rush through these last two days this week. DH and I are taking the day off on Friday, dropping off a key at our friends' place, and leisurely driving out to the port for a quiet evening and dinner at Grill's.

One of my main objectives for my TR is to get pictures and details on ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. I'm going to try to get a comprehensive list of beers available...take pictures of all food that we eat...type up exactly what's included on the REAS breakfast in bed. Please, please, if you have any requests, let me know! The only thing we won't be doing, I apologize, is taking pictures and getting details on the kid's clubs - we're staying far away from those areas. ;)

LOL!

Invited people are very different from strangers  Especially ones you share a glass of wine with!

I get claustrophobic so I need a way out :scared: or else we might have booked at least a cat 9.

Hi there! Happy almost honeymoon!!

Just wanted to say with the REAS- they gave us Korbel in the room )it was there for embarkation) and a bottle of wine at Palo (you choose from the premium list, and can upgrade to something else at an additional $$).

Can't wait to hear about your cruise!!!

That's definitely something we've also taken into consideration - the bags aren't completely sealed yet and I can still remove things! I think one bottle of Korbel and one bottle of wine are most likely being removed from the suitcase in the end, to take into account the REAS bottles.

And thanks for coming over to my thread!
