Ford Edge versus Grand Caravan - will we fit?

We currently have a Grand Caravan booked for our upcoming trip. If I downgrade us to a Standard SUV like the Ford Edge, it saves quite a bit of cash ($150 ish). But...will we fit?

We have 3 adults and 2 tweens. The tween are definitely small tween sized (5 feet 80 lb ish each) so seating wise, not worried about it. It's the luggage I'm not sure of.

We will have 5 suitcases. Most likely 4 of them airline carryon rollerbag size but possibly one larger that is checked. Probably 4 carryons that are of the small backpack, daypack, tote bag size, maybe 5.

No problem in a van but ????

Carryons could all go on laps I guess, except for the driver of course. We will need to drive to Vero and back though so it needs to be livable for 1-2 hour long trips, twice.

TIA!

I would stick with the mini van. Hint: Go for the Chrylser Towne and Country with the leather interior, it has a DVD player in it. Of course, this is assuming you will have that choice.

No you won't. It's tough getting three kids comfortably in the back seat of an edge, let alone an adult and two tweens. Stick with the van.

Quite positive we will get whatever they give us, "Grand Caravan or comparable". LOL! Thanks

Well it's two small skinny tweens and one teen girl. Who fit ok in our Highlander on one seat, or in the 3rd row of a Sienna but I'm not sure how it compares width wise. That middle seat in both is pretty small.

Stick with the van. The Edge is smaller than you think

Small as in we won't fit or small as in mildly uncomfortable for an hour long drive?

I think you'll wind up with at least one suitcase on the lap of the rear-seat passengers in the Edge.

Edge is much smaller and not nearly as well appointed as a Grand Caravan. If you're going with Enterprise, keep in mind that they can put you in a Town and Country as well, which have been much nicer, IMO, or in a not-as-nice Toyota Sienna, all at the same price.

The T&C is well worth the $ if you can get one. They generally have the reverse cam, serius radio, stow and go seats. You'd have to have a dang nice Edge to come even close. I can get 26-28 MPG out of a T&C if I'm careful.

I would not make the switch with that many people and that much stuff.

Can you reserve both ( for now) go to a local car dealership and look at the Edge in person.

It's what I am planning so I can see first hand what an Impala's trunk looks like.

No I am not hauling all my suitcases there...lol, but seeing it in person should be a lot better than looking at google images.

Or under their feet, which we've done many a time in our old Sienna as a family of 6 on a 2 week road trip. granted the tweens are taller now than they were then.

Our options are limited as we are renting from a DTD location and dropping off at Vero so Enterprise doesn't work, the only "easy" options are really Hertz, Avis and Budget, or at least those with any availability at present. Honestly it's just to get us from WDW to Vero and then Vero to the port. Other than one outing for a turtle walk we really won't be in the car so aren't concerned much with it being luxurious at all, just about whether it gets us there and we fit :goodvibes if it was a small difference I wouldn't bother but we are talking potentially 200+
in savings.

I am definitely considering that. Also considering a Grand Marquis as an option

I have a Lincoln MKX which is very similar to the Edge. You will fit but it will be tight and there will not be room for extras. Right now we have four suitcases in the back and could do a fifth but then I would not be able to see out the back. There would be no room on the floor for the suitcase in the back seat. We pretty much fill the car now with two adults, a 12 and 14 year old. I can't imagine putting another one in there for more than a ride across the street.

thanks! That is very helpful. I think we will end up going with either an Escape or a minivan. Challenge is no new availability on the vans (or super pricey) and it won't let me modify the ressie I have to drop a day which I need to do. So I have both booked at the moment.

The Grand Caravan will offer you the most room. It seats 7 and if it is equipped with 'stow and go' seating you can fold down the unused seats to give more room for luggage. I own one and I can get 26 mpg on the highway so gas mileage is decent for a 7 pax vehicle.

Thanks, I know it will offer the most room, my question really isn't that, but more will we even fit in the other one. $200 is a pretty big difference to pay for something we will be in a total of maybe 4 hours over 3 different trips, over 3 days. As I see it all we really will be using it for is:

OKW to Vero
Out for dinner 1 night in Vero
Drive to turtle walk in Vero
Vero to Cape Canaveral

Only 2 of those involve having luggage in the car. Just having a hard time swallowing that much more $$ for 3 days.

The T&C will have serius radio IF it is under 10K miles. Not all have the backup camera and the Grand Caravan also has stow and go seats, it is a feature of both. Some of the T&C's have DVD players in them. The ones with the leather interior have those as well as the backup camera and the under 10K serius radio. I love the T&C and try to find the ones with leather for my customers. There is also no guarantee an Edge will be the car she will receive in the class rented. It usually says Edge or similar.

Smart that you are going to go an look!!!! But, I can tell you that at 18.6 cf. It is huge.

I'm only concerned with if we will fit, we really don't care about radio, leather, rear view camera, etc for a car we will spend max a total of 4 or hours in over a 3 day period. $200 is an awful lot for more legroom. Less concerned about the kids to be honest (if they can survive a 2,000 mile roadtrip in a Sienna packed to the gills with stuff under their feet, in between the seats and no room to look out the back, they can handle this lol) than the luggage. You are absolutely correct, there is no guarantee that it would be an Edge, it will be a "standard" SUV, that is the booking category.

Have you considered a full size car.....like an Impala? They have huge trunks.

I have, cubic feet wise the standard suv class is bigger for storage. 18.6 versus 32 or 34 ish.
