For those who use Paypal (warning)

I've gotten many many paypal emails the last few years that are of course frauds and want you to submit your paypal info by email or something. I always forward them to paypal.

BUT tonight I got one that scared the hell out of me. It looked totally legit and came from the paypal email with the exact type of email you get when you pay for an ebay auction. It said I had just sent $131.43 for an auction I won. I got scared and logged onto paypal and it showed that I hadn't sent any money. I went back and looked at the email and at the bottom it had a link to click if I thought this transaction was a fraud. So I knew then it was a scam. I sent it on to Paypal.

Just an FYI, watch out everyone!

Thanks for the heads up Kyle. I have to admit that email would have probably fooled me so I really appreciate the warning. Ugh, I'm just afraid that one of these days someone is going to sucker me with one of these scams...

Bumping this back up for those who haven't seen it.

Thank you for the info. Paypal had been sending me emails wanting to do an update on the info. they had about me, but time after time, have not responded to me.
Do you happen to know of a phone number to contact them?

Eeeek! This does not sound legit. How did you respond to them? Was there a link in the e-mail to a wab page where you could type in information. If so, this was almost certainly a scam.

I started to sign up for Paypal when it was first being pushed so heavily on eBay. There was a chat group there that talked about the terrible problems they were experiencing with their Paypal accounts. Many of them spoke of accounts being frozen, missing funds etc. These people also said they could never reach Paypal for any kind of resolution.....only recieved form letters that never brought resolution to their particular problem. This info they shared was enough for me....I stayed away. Now, it seems many of the sellers I'd like to do business with only accept Paypal. What's a person to do? Is there a true "safe" way to use Paypal services?

P.S. This particular "chat group" didn't profess to be savvy banking or financial people. Is it possible they were just uninformed as to how the service works? Or....is it really that much of a mess?

It took us 15 months to "unfreeze" our account recently. DH bought some hockey equipment off of ebay. The seller misrepresented the merchandise, even the sizes were wrong. DH sent it back, and we put a freeze on the credit card transaction, which I guess you are not supposed to do. To make a long story short, Paypal made us send the UPS tracking number 3 TIMES to prove that we returned the merch. Each time they said they never got it, even when we talked to other people at Paypal who said they did. It was a huge mess, and it was not easy to get it straightened out. I now only use Paypal when it is absolutely necessary.

Thanks for the warning Kyle.

I did put in some info. but it did not go into their system, so I wrote to them to let them know what was going on, and I haven't heard back from them. They told me that unless I update my info. I won't be able to use their paypal system.

Definitly a phishing scam. The link they sent you almost certainly did not go to PayPal, but rather to some con artist's server. I would log onto PayPay right away and change your password.

What sort of info did you enter? If it included credit card, Checking account, drivers licence or Social Security Numbers, you might have some have some fraudualnt charges heading your way.

Definetly agree with this. Your not supposed to submit any into to paypal buy email. I know someone that did and it turned up a few months later that they bought a car in Texas and they've never been to Texas! FBI said it was identity theft and in doing some research it looked like it happened from their paypal account. Big HUGE mess

Thanks Don for the info.
Did anyone else recieve an email from Paypal titled-Notice of Pendency of Class Action and Proposed Settlement? If so, what did you do about it?
