I love reading and my favorite type of books are hardcover although I will purchase large print paperbacks occasionally.

Do you think I'd enjoy a Kindle?

TIA, Sincerely, Sadie

YES

Love my Kindle. Love love love.:thumbsup2

I splurged and purchased a Kindle in the summer.
What I like about it:
so light, easier to read in bed, on planes, take with me everywhere

holds lots of books so I can read several when I am traveling or stuck somewhere for a long time

free books and reduced prices

not a lot of book piles after reading books

But I want to add, I still read books which I get used or from the library, or even I have bought a few. I read alot and love it all.

Also, the one thing I miss from Kindle reading (don't tell people who don't do this) being able to read toward the end or back at the beginning to see if it gets better or if I missed something. You can't just flip to a different section.

Hope that helps a little.

Are you serious? If it's my stinkin book, I should be fully able to flip through it as I please.

I love to read but nothing about the Kindle appeals to me. I like my stacks of books, I like feeling the pages in my fingers. And now I will add that I like flipping back and forth at will.

Agreed!!

This sounds odd but I love the feel of the book, the smell of the book, etc. The Kindle's just a little too much for me.

That being said, I am getting my daddy the Nook for Christmas. He used to love to read but is almost blind now due to glaucoma :guilty:. The doctor thinks that the Nook might be beneficial because it's back light and the text can be pretty large! I understand the Kindle/Nook for those types of sitautions but it doesn't float my own boat! :lmao:

I don't have one, but for me, the biggy would be I read all over and while on occasion I have left a book, I'd have to be very responsible for the Kindle, and it would be pretty expensive to forget it somewhere. I always have paperbacks with me when traveling and some places have a trade library (campgrounds, cruiseships) so when I finish, I can leave it for someone and pick up a new one. If I love the book, and want to pass it on to a friend, I can. I also like the feel of the book, and the freedom to skip all over, go back and reread easily if I need to. I also get most of my books for .25 - 1.00 at garage sales/library book sales..so it's easy to take a chance on a book, without it costing very much.

That said, my sister loves hers.

I love to read too, but I don't think I'll get a Kindle, for a variety of reasons.

I like to see all the books I've read, or am going to read, lined up on my bookcase.

I like to see how far I've gotten in the book by where my bookmark is.

I love feel of the pages in my hands.

I sometimes like to go back and re-read certain sections of books, and it is easier to find those sections in a book than on a Kindle.

I'm just old-fashioned, I guess.

I love to read but haven't gone for a Kindle. I think maybe it's because I stare at a computer screen all day at work and my eyes need a break from digital screens in the evenings. I'm sure the Kindle is easier on the eyes than my big old computer monitor, but still.

Also as a graphic designer I love to see the typography and paper and jacket covers, etc., of a real book. Maybe Kindle replicates this somehow, but I haven't read enough about it to know.

I suppose I could do both the Kindle and real books, though. Not ruling out a Kindle, just haven't felt the need yet! If I traveled more I could definitely see buying a Kindle just for the sake of saving space in my luggage.

My thoughts exactly.

I have a Sony Reader which I love and have had for two years.

It has simply changed my life - I always have something to read - in line to get kids, broken down at side of road, traveling, at the pool at Disney, in line waiting for Cubs tickets. Carry it everywhere.

Lightweight, portable and instant.

Holds a ton of books - if I was on a long business trip there is no way I would want to carry 5 hardcovers with me.

Plus I have saved a TON of money. Instead of a hardcover costing $27.95, I get new releases at $9.99.

My sister lent me her Kindle this summer and I just didn't enjoy it. It doesn't have the same feeling as a book and I can't lend the book. And what happens when the Kindle becomes older technology--will I then have to update all my "books" just like the whole record, 8 track, cassette tape, cd thing?

I did enjoy needling my sister with my endless concerns about it, though. :lmao:

I LOVE my Kindle. I read much more now and find that my eyes are much less tired reading on the Kindle versus a regular book. Even my DH, who wasn't an avid reader, started using my Kindle and became a huge fan. Now he has one of his own and I would say that at least 50% of our books were free through Amazon. We also travel a lot and it's great not having to haul a bunch of books with us. I can't say enough great things about my Kindle! :thumbsup2

ITA. I love actual books. The Kindle does not appeal to me at all.

I agree.. I guess I'm a bit of a "book snob".. I want the actual book.. I absolutely love books! :lovestruc

I love actual books! But my husband and I do a lot of traveling, and with luggage restrictions getting worse and worse, our books (he loves to read as much as I do and has to have large print) were simply taking up far too much of our luggage. The Kindle weighs a few ounces, will hold a bunch of books and fits in our carryon.

My best friend just bought one for me and I LOVE it! I love to read and read everyday. I do enjoy actual books too, but the Kindle is fantastic. Here are some things I enjoy about it.
You can look up words right there while you are reading. LOVE that feature. You can highlight parts to refer back to later, add your own notes and book make many pages.
You can pick your font size.
It keeps your place for you no matter how many times you exit out of the book. And you can really read multiple books at the same time without worrying about your place getting lost.
You can download preview chapters to see if you like it before you buy.
You can share books with other people under the same account. My friend and I are linked so we share our books.
You can download books from anywhere!
Lightweight and easy to travel with. I take mine everywhere with me. Long battery life is a bonus too.
There is no eye strain because it isn't like looking at a computer. The text looks exactly like it would on a regular paper page. There are no lights on the device and it is not back lit. So it is like looking at a book.

If you know someone who loves to read, it is PERFECT! I still will turn to some of my well worn in favorites, but it is nice to know I can carry all of Jane Austen's books with me and it weighs next to nothing. So when I need my Mr. Darcy fix, it is right there at my fingertips. This is the wave of the future for sure. They are even working with making one for college students. AWESOME!!!

LOVE My Kindle!

I love to sample the books for free. This has saved me so much money, books I thought I would love were a definite NO after the first couple of chapters.

I too was a "flipper" reading the ending first. The Kindle has put an end to that and has actually made the book experience better!

Access to Wikipedia. Read a historical fiction book that I was able to look up the "characters" simultaneously while reading.

As a busy mom, I can get a book anytime, anywhere.

Lots of free books. And brand new hardback books are a great price.

Amazon's customer service has been excellent.

Very easy on the eyes. To a previous poster: It is NOT a digital screen. It is NOT at all like looking at a computer. I looks just like reading from a paperback.

I have nothing bad to say about my Kindle, except that my husband wants to borrow it!

The Nook is not backlit - neither is the Kindle. Both use the same electronic ink technology and the screen is opaque, which means light can't shine through. The bottom portion of the Nook will have an LCD touch screen, but the actual part of the screen where the text of the book will be read is not backlit. The screen is actually a light gray and the text is black - or a very, very dark gray that looks like black. You can increase the font size - there are 6 choices on the Kindle, I don't know how many the Nook will have. The largest font size on Kindle is equal to about a size 20 font in Microsoft Word.

Again, the Kindle doesn't have a digital screen. It's an entirely different technology and most closely resembles the text of a book. It produces little or no eyestrain because there is no light source other than the ambient room lighting - just like a regular book. If you need a lamp or an overhead light to read a regular book, you'll need the same light source for a Kindle.

It's not that you don't have permission to flip through the book, but that it's more difficult in some ways than a paper book. With paper, you can flip back and forth at will, but you have to find what you are looking for either by getting lucky and spotting it as the pages go by, or by having a memory of the location (ie it's about two thirds of the way through) and then turning to that section of the book and skimming.

You can't do either of those things with a Kindle. On the other hand, if you know the chapter you can select from a menu screen and jump back and forth from chapter to chapter. If you liked a passage and bookmarked it - the Kindle is able to bookmark any location in the book and allow you to jump to it immediately from a bookmark menu - you can find your spot pretty quickly. And, if you know a word or part of a sentence you can do a specific search and the Kindle will locate all places in the book where that word or phrase is used, in order.

I'd say it's about 50/50 for me between being mildly inconvenienced with its limitations and totally amazed with its capabilitues, in terms of the flipping issue. Overall, there are about 5% of things I miss about a paper book and about 95% of things I love and would hate to have to give up about Kindle.
