I lived in the Hudson Valley for over a decade and really only view it as a ‘tourist destination’ for people from the city. Think apple picking in the fall, taking the train up to spend the day in certain cute little towns on the river, visiting FDR’s place, etc. We were back home for a funeral earlier this year and I picked up the Orange County Visitor’s Guide from a kiosk in a diner. (I really miss diners!) I flipped through it on the plane ride home and thought, wow, this is really good stuff. The brewery scene has really grown since we lived there. But most people headed to NY just want to see NYC. I don’t think the Hudson Valley will ever be a tourist destination in itself. And we’ve always thought the location of the new Legoland is, well, really odd. And since we're on the topic, sorry, just had to....

i never knew of it until i watched a newer show on hgtv that focused on the region. just stunning! dh and i remarked that some of the areas reminded us of areas around where we grew up before tourism ruined them. looks beautiful-i imagine the fall colors are stunning!

For those who have never visited the Hudson Valley on vacation, would ever want to in the future? Our tourism seems to be on the rise from what I have heard so I was curious if Disboarders have ever considered visiting our beautiful area? 😊
I hear it’s very nice but have no desire to visit. If I’m that area I would prefer NYC.

I have been there before, so not really the target of the question, but yes, I do consider it a good vacation spot.

What county if you don't mind me asking and was it recently? I'm curious because a lot of new things have happened here in the last decade.

Honestly, I would just travel back to my home state of Michigan because they have some great areas that have apple orchards, cider farms and festivals, great foliage colors in the fall, Mackinac Island were the only motor vehicles are for emergency departments, Pinconning for some great cheese and a Bavarian town in Frankenmuth, plus many more places :D
I get that love of the home state. DH's family is from Door Cty, WI and we have been there many times. There is a nostalgia for the old familiar places.

I grew up in the Finger Lakes and live in Mass now, so I go through Albany and Rensselaer counties whenever I go back to visit. Someday, I'd love to get down to Duchess County for the FDR library and to Westchester county for the Sleepy Hollow touristy stuff.

I did a double take scrolling when I saw this chat! I live here and NEVER imagined it being a topic 😂😂😂

Easy train ride from the city, and I think it’s a great day trip for someone spending a week in NYC.

Not sure if I would make it my main destination though if I didn’t live here.

The Mid-Hudson Valley is the best of the Hudson Valley but I'm bias. 😊

Our community days (every town has one) are awsome to see as well. Feel free to ask questions about the area on the thread @PollyannaMom .😊

There are several historical places in the Hudson Valley that are pretty interesting … Olana, Martin Van Buren NHS, Clermont SP, Montgomery Place … along with many others. We found that the Apple orchards in the HV are fairly expensive as compared to other parts of the state, especially way up north (if you’re ever up near the Plattsburgh area, check out Rulf’s Orchard).

I've never been to the North Eastern US at all. But I would love to take a road trip out that way someday. I have no desire to ever go to New York City. The Hudson Valley is definitely more my taste, from the very little I know. I have a friend who opened a restaurant out there recently so now we have a good "excuse" to make it out there sometime! It will likely be several years before we make it happen though. So just hoping his restaurant is successful enough to still be around at that time!

World Cup 2026 would be a good excuse too.

No I live in CT and there isn’t enough there that is different. I would be more likely to do a weekend trip to Vermont or maine. New York is running tons of tourism ads in CT currently. I see at least one a day.

When I was young our family went to the Catskills Game Farm. Another time to West Point. In 5th grade our school field trip went to Washington Irving’s home.

Last summer I went through that area on the way to the Saratoga area.

I'm in MA but grew up near Syracuse. Never visited the Hudson region beyond driving past.

You need to market to the people who vacation on Cape Cod, particularly the people who drive from NY/NJ to visit Cape Cod. There's nothing to do on the cape that can't be done better in Upstate NY or in Maine. And there is much less traffic in those areas. Hiking - Upstate NY; beaches - Maine (or I suppose the national sea shore, but the rest of the cape beaches are so small & crowded); culture - pretty much anywhere is better. Although granted there are lots of golf/mini golf options if that's your jam. I honestly can't understand why people vacation on Cape Cod, other than a day trip from surrounding areas.
