I've noticed that many sellers on eBay now only accept Paypal. I've heard horror stories about using it and managed to avoid it till now. But too many nice things are getting away because I don't have it! :bitelip:

Anyway, I'd like to know if there is a big advantage to using a credit card as opposed to a bank account for these transactions? By the way, any cc or bank account would be used *only* for Paypal transactions. So, one of them safer, better or less hassle than the other? :hyper:

Sellers like PayPal because most buyers pay right away and the whole transaction takes much less time. There is still some fraud, but I think it is less overall and if you follow the rules (only shipping to confirmed addresses and delivery confirmation) you are protected.

As for setting up an account, it is nice to use a credit card because they are another line of recourse should you be scammed. I agree that using a separate bank account is the best way to go if you go that route. I have to since I buy and sell but it is not even at the same bank as my main account. For what it is worth, I always use my credit card with PayPal because the seller is getting charged a transaction fee whether you pay with a credit card, existing funds or a bank account so might as well make them do something for the money.

This is not true. When you use a bank account the seller does not get charged a fee - only when you use a CC. When you use a CC the seller gets charged a 2.9% fee plus 30 cent transaction fee.

I get charged a fee no matter how you pay.

Forgot to finish my post before I submitted it.

I have used my PayPal account for years (buying and selling) and have never had a problem. I do have it linked to it's own bank account but I just use my regular credit card. On most low price transactions I use my PayPal balance on larger transaction I use my credit card for the extra protection.

Sorry but you are mistaken. You are charged the fee for every transaction. This is not true of personal accounts, only premier. However, if you want to advertise in your auction that you accept PayPal you must take ALL types of payments and are by default forced to upgrade.

I've used PayPal since March, 2000 and have never had a problem. I use it for all of my eBay transactions--both buying and selling. I even have the debit card, which comes in handy every now and again. My personal experience with PayPal has been very good and I'd have no problem recommending it based on that experience.

If you have a paypal account that accepts credit cards you are charged for EVERY transaction not just credit card ones. If you only set up the basic paypal account that doesnt accept credit cards you arent charged a fee existing funds transfers but if your account will accept a credit card you are charged for every transaction.
