How do you do this? Do you go to bed early to get a few hours sleep or do you stay up all day and then leave at night. My husband really wants to leave at Midnight but i need a few hours sleep. In the past have always went to bed around 9:00 to 2:00 and leave around 3:00. I just dont know if i could survive on 3 hours if i even get that (my luck i wont sleep). Years ago did this with no sleep and swore i would never do it again.

We do this all the time. He can sleep anywhere so when he gets off from work he will shower and then hit the bed or chair and sleep. He does get off work at 3:15pm so he can be asleep by 4:30pm. I will have everything packed and ready to just jump in the car. When he gets up we leave, usually after he has sleep 5 hours. He will drive and I will sleep and then I take over about 5am so he can rest before we check in. We do make check in a light day with just an evening park to have dinner and look around. It takes up exactly 12 hours to drive it and it is not bad, kids are rested and seems like no one eats anything or ask for anything when we stop. We found that driving through the night saved us a fortune from spliting the trip up.

I usually try to sleep during the day that we leave (we normally go to Disney in the winter months so the kids are in school during the day). sometimes it's hard to fall asleep at first but, since I have been running around for days ahead of the trip, packing, cleaning, picking up last minute items, napping during that day isn't impossible. DH is usually working during the day so, he drives the first part until he gets tired then I take over, we like to leave after dinner in the early evening. Ear plugs are a life saver for the other driver when it's their turn to sleep, especially when you are trying to sleep while the kids are awake.

When DH gets home from work, he usually eats something and then goes to bed, about 7-8pm. (He can sleep anywhere, anytime). The kids and I pack the car and get everything set to leave. I try to keep the younger ones awake but if they start drifting, I can put them in the car. This usually happens after midnight. I wake DH up about 12:30am and we are on the road in an hour. All the kids now are so tired that they sleep, me too!. Then in the morning hours I am rested and DH can take a nap.
