For those of you who have kids with iphones

dd16 has had an Otterbox Armor case on her Iphone 4s for a long time and it has done a fantastic job. The day after she put the case on she accidentally slammed the car door on the case/phone and it didn't hurt it at all. Since then it has survived tons of abuse and the phone is fine.

Honestly, the iphone is pretty rugged to start with. As long as you don't plan to take it under water, I don't see the need for a case. And, yes, both my daughter and I have iphones with no cases.

I agree that it's pretty rugged. We all have clear rubber 'cases' that basically surround the sides and back of the phone. I've dropped my phone quite a few times and it hasn't broken. My kids have had their iphones for years now, no screens broken yet.

I think the biggest risk would be keeping it in a pocket (or handbag) with something inflexible, like coins or keys. If you sit down wrong, you could crack the case.

All 4 of us have Otterbox defenders for 1 year and no damage whatsoever. I have coworkers, early 20s, who think a small case or no case is way cooler and more sleek but then they complain that they have to keep getting their glass replaced.

My dh has a very grungy, physical job (welder/mechanic in a water treatment plant) so he's hard on everything. Worse than 2 teen boys combined. Even a leather wallet can't last more than 1 year with him. If the defender can protect his phone (no cracks, scratches, nothing) it gets an A+ in my book. It looks a little beat up now that it's turning 1 but I got him a new one for Christmas.
It's $ well spent & cheaper than replacing the phone itself.

:goodvibes

I always have used Otterbox's in the past but I am getting an Iphone6 next week and the reviews on the otterbox for those all say they don't fit right.
I HATE the lifeproof cases, they may protect the phone but when you talk to someone that is using that case all you hear is muffled mumbling, its horrible.

All three iPhones in this house have Otterbox Defenders on them. If you watch Amazon, you can get really good deals (they are normally around $50 each). Our cases last about two years with pretty heavy daily use. We all recently got new cases and I paid no more than $20 for any of them by watching Amazon like a hawk.

DD10 and I have Otterbox Defender and Lifeproof Fre cases for our 6's. I've never been an Otterbox fan but the Defender was the only decent case that Verizon had the day the 6 came out so that is what I got. Neither of us have any fit issues. I like the design and it feels like it's better constructed than the one I had for my 5. But we both prefer the slimmer Lifeproof. I've had them on my 4s, 5, and now 6 and never had a sound quality issue.

EYN cases seem to be pretty popular with middle/high school kids around here. They're protective and the back opens and has a small space for personal items, so they can carry school ID and a little cash. That can come in very handy!

Otterbox customer service is phenomenal. Both my kids' Ipads are in Otterboxes. When my DS got his case for Christmas he was trying to open the package and scratched the screen protector with the scissors. I emailed Otterbox, explained exactly what happened, and they said to send a photo and replaced the entire thing.

I am really hard on my Iphone but I've had mine in a two piece shutterfly case with no issues. I drop it constantly. It's an Iphone 4 that refuses to die.

I have the Casemate Tough Xtreme case for my iphone 5s and really like it. It's similar to an Otterbox I think. It doesn't feel too bulky, and there's a built-in screen protector. No issues with hearing/reception.

Otterbox Defender is my favorite. It is nice and protects it from my clumsy self. The only flaw seems to be that they are NOT waterproof.

The Otterbox Armor is tough and waterproof, BUT it seems as if nobody can hear you when you talk on it. You have to pull the thing loose that covers the mic while you are talking (which is annoying). The other advantage of the Otterbox Armor is you can use your phone as a weapon if necessary. The case is so heavy, if you hit an attacker with your phone, you would probably kill him.

I tried Lifeproof on my old iPhone. While it was waterproof, it just didn't seem as tough as the Otterbox. I have a friend who got a broken screen just by carrying around an iPhone in a backpack in a Lifeproof case. I did drop mine on tile once in the Lifeproof case and it was unharmed.

I love my Speck CandyShell grip case. According to their website, it's drop-tested to meet or exceed military standards. The case is sturdy, doesn't add extra bulk, and has rubber grips on it, which makes it easier to hang on to in the first place. I've dropped my phone in this case a couple of times, and it was unscathed. For my last iPhone, I used an Otterbox case, and I wasn't crazy about it. It did a great job of protecting the phone, but the case itself was slick and pretty bulky.
