For Those of us Who Love Broadway...

The Music Man, Guys and Dolls, Funny Face and Singing in the Rain are all favorites of mine.

Oh, I love Singing in the Rain and Funny Face too! I need to watch them again, it's been awhile.

What's everybody's favorite movie musical? Of course I love the classics like Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, and Oliver! but I have a special place in my heart for Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Love it!!

Fiddler on the Roof, Sound of Music, Jesus Christ Superstar, Rent, and Annie are the ones that come to mind right away. I've loved SoM and Annie since I was little, watching both of them over and over (and I've gotten to perform in each of them...a total dream come true!)

I have to agree with Funny Face, one of the most perfect movie musicals ever made, with Cabaret and Meet Me in St. Louis a close second and third.

Also, A Star is Born (1954), Rocky Horror Picture Show, Beauty and the Beast (Disney's most perfect movie musical ever), Yankee Doodle Dandy, Dancer in the Dark, Little Shop of Horrors, The Harvey Girls, 8 Femmes, Funny Girl, Chicago, Singin' in the Rain, The Wiz.

Oh.... Hello, Dolly!, Gypsy (1962), Dreamgirls and Mame - despite their overall awfulness - are extraordinarily entertaining guilty pleasures!

I've made my decision on what shows I will be seeing when I'm in NYC in a couple of weeks.

  1. In the Heights
  2. A Little Night Music
  3. Next to Normal

I've seen Next to Normal...I know I will enjoy it. I'm really looking forward to seeing the other two.

1. Spamalot
2. Jesus Christ Superstar
3. Peter Pan (it was one of my high school shows that I didn't actually see on BWay)
4. Ave Q (Didn't see it, but have the sound track on my iPod)
5. Les Mis (HS Show)

Worst
1. Bye Bye Birdie (HS Show)
2. Fame (HS Show)
3. Grease
4. Sunday in the Park
5. Music Man (HS Show)

I love Broadway as well. I haven't seen too many shows, but am so hoping to see Lion King one day. I've been wanting to for several years now.

FYI, one of my former students is in Billy Elliot. She was also on Law & Order SVU last spring. :)

Lion King was great!! I think you'd really enjoy it.

That's SO cool about your student being in Billy Elliot!! Do you teach dance?

That's cool, Nikki. Who is it? I have a friend in the show (actually today's matinee was his last show).

And sooner or later, I think the entire NYC theater community is on Law and Order, aren't they??

I have never seen the show, but she is one of the kids in it. She's a little blond hair girl. :)

She was in my fifth grade class.

Bumping this thread since it's the first day of the new season!

We're off to see Mrs. Warren's Profession with Cherry Jones tonight, and then Coco at the York next week, and Lombardi, with Judith Light and Dan Lauria the week after that. I love fall!

Ok....I'm reading the words but hearing "neener neener neener" in my head.;)

Andrea Marcovicci, Jessica Grové and Charles Kimbrough.

Sounds like a great cast.

Recently read a Hepburn bio and they said she was a WITCH (change one letter) during the run of that show.

Temperamental, demanding, obstinate, emotional....you name it.

I would have killed to see her in it.

I believe it. My mother in law and father in law saw her in the show back int he original run. When we were cleaning out their house, a few months ago, we found this:

Oooooo! I love this thread!! I've only seen a handful of actual Broadway shows, but I've seen many touring shows. I'm very involved in community theatre here in Indianapolis. I have a tech rehearsal for Annie today! (I'm playing Lily St. Regis... super fun!)

Here are my favorites:

1. Crazy for You (with Jodi Benson) My 1st official Broadway show!
2. Blast! (My BIL was the featured trumpet soloist)
3. Lion King (tears at the opening... just beautiful)
4. Rent (wow... way to make you uncomfortable, then rip your heart out)

Here are my favorite shows I've performed in:

1. Seussical the Musical (I was Mayzie LaBird)
2. Throughly Modern Millie (Miss Flannery.. would've DIED to see Sutton in this!)
3. Joseph and the Amazing... (I got to be the Narrator... one of the highlights of my performing career!)
4. Godspell (I got to sing Day by Day.. beautiful, yet super repetitive)

Shows I've never seen, but NEED to!

1. The Last 5 Years (The most amazing soundtrack I've ever laid my ears on!)
2. Wicked (Seriously.. I call myself a musical theatre buff and I've NEVER seen it!)
3. Mary Poppins (DH and I went to Chicago to see this.. 20 minutes into the show, the computers froze, so none of the scenery would work.. they canceled the show and refunded our money... NOT happy!!)

Thanks for the great thread and great discussion!

I am beyond jealous! Those are two shows (and the two parts as a matter of fact) that I am DYING to be able to perform in at some point! They must have been so much fun!
