We have a land sea trip booked this fall, and to prevent any POST Cruise/Disney Depression (LOL), I'm already planning a surprise WDW visit for me and my two youngest boys for next year, summerish time.
Based on our School systems and the fact that The fall of 2010 my two youngest will be in Grades 2 and 8 (the older of these two has an IEP, and learns at his own pace) What would be the better time to plan for a full week at WDW? Either the end of August, beginning of September or mid to end of September. There will likely be free dining at this time which is what I'm aiming for. So to miss no school, some school, or a lot of school, as well as crowds in WDW, what would be best in your opinion?

Have you ever braved the Florida heat in Aug/Sept? I've been at the beginning and end of September, and the heat darn near did us in both times (not to mention it's prime hurricane season, hence why they promote free dining!).

If you don't mind taking the kids out of school (and it seems like your older one with IEP would be ok and grade 2 isn't really an issue), then I'd aim for as late into the fall as possible. Free dining this year goes into the first week of October.

I totally agree! I went in the middle of August before and it was sooo hot. Even my DS doesn't want to go back in that heat.

It was sooo hot. Triple digits on more than one occasion. And the whole time was just wet!! Like if I had a hair stuck to me, it really stuck cause my skin was so wet. Ick!! But hey, it was still Disney!!

I have to agree with the others we went for the first time in mid Sept. over 100 each day and VERY humid. Even with the free dining DGD and DD were exhausted by day 3. The crowds weren't bad then but the last week of Aug. I would think the parks would be packed with pre-school vactioners.
Don't forget the American thanksgiving is the last week of Nov. so I'm planning on going the first week of Nov. 2011 should be cool enough then:rotfl:
Best of luck

I must be crazy but I don't find it too bad and we have been 3 times in the summer and once in Sept and are going again this Aug. Our weather has been so bad this summer that I am looking forward to some sun and heat. Yes, it is very hot and humid but if we are not in the parks we are in the pool or waterpark and when we are in the park we are in and out of A/C. When we went last Sept is was hotter than any time in Aug we have been and the crowds may have been a little lighter but if you'd rather not take the kids out of school then I would suggest the end of August. Disney did extend the free dining into the fall but they just did that recently so if you are planning something now for next year the only time you can pretty much bet on for free dining would be the Aug/Sept months. If they offer fall free dining again it may not be offered until next summer.

We've done August. We've done July and now we're doing August again. Yes, we're doing it because I don't want to take DD out of school. Yes it's hot but after this summer, I can stand for some crazy hot humid heat! If you live in Southern Ontario you know we haven't had the hot humid heat. So we're go to Florida for it! It'll be cold enough soon enough.:upsidedow

I have a DS in grade 6 with an IEP and a little one in grade 1.
We do not hesitate to take the boys out of school to vacation.
Based on the heat and hurricane season I would go as late in the fall as you could. :)

Thanks for all the opinions! It gives me something to work with. I'll definately wait till the free dining is offered and then pick my dates. We are going this fall for Halloween, so it'll be interesting to FEEL what the weather is at that time of year. Yes, with the summer we are currently having I could deal with some humid heat. Most of the buildings are air conditioned anyway.
I do assume that free dining is a much better deal cost wise than the free entrance on your birthday deal. We went in April the last time and it was HOT and humid then but perhaps not as bad as in the summer.
Going to make this a big surprise in any case (if I can keep my mouth shut this time!) Don't want to tell them till we are at the airport (don't know how to do that though if we end up driving to fly out of SYR). Our current trip for this fall, I booked LAST fall, and told everyone right away. If I had kept my mouth shut, I could have saved a TON on Christmas Gifts!

We loved going in September until we went in April. That is our new favourite time to go. All the warmth of a nice Ontario summer day no humidity
