For those just back, FINGER SCAN?

Why do they not have it be the same finger for all? Like right index finger... thats not hard to remember I wouldn't think? Then if you have an issue the backup finger is left index...

That is indeed the suggested finger, the right index that is. However they do not enforce any particular digit placement on the first use. My wife uses her right thumb, just because she wants to.

A rebel! I love it! :thumbsup2

My ds uses a different finger every time and it works fine. One day we traded passes that way we could just tell them we mixed them up. But guess what, they still worked fine.

Go figure

It's really only a problem if somebody had their finger up their nose before they scanned, then you scan your finger and get the booger and then stick your finger up your nose or try to dig a piece of lettuce out from between your teeth or something like that. Then you could get the flu if the booger innoculator had it first. Otherwise, the finger scan shouldn't pass the swine flu.

:crazy2:

I never gave the finger scan a second thought..until reading this.

They should disinfect it between guests. Yeah..right, that's gonna happen.
:rolleyes1

I've had the scanner not work..and it's usually had something to do with the length of my nails at the time?...any other ladies run into this? Sometimes the fit was awkward, and my finger didn't lay just right. They just wave me in. OR....that's just what they tell me, and it doesn't work anyway.

Isn't it amazing that one's finger is proportionate to the size of one's nostrils, thus allows one to go boogie diving!
And then Disney finds a way to share the boogies with others!

I have not read all of the responses, so forgive me if this has been said. It is my understanding that the scanner only looks at five or so reference points on your finger. It is not a complete print scan. Just a center point and maybe four reference points radiating out from that. It is possible that 2 people would have the same reference points with such a low tech system.

I usually keep both mine and my wife's ticket in my wallet. A few times we would get them switched up and have trouble with entry. So, I know the system works for the most part.

Depending on the demeanor of the CM, and the crowd size trying to get in,as hold my finger in the scanner, I love to look at them with a look of fear on my face and yell 'It's burning'!!!!!!!!!

So far no one has seen the humor in it. (Except me)

I find it quite humorous! :rotfl2:

I was not aware that Disney had implemented the finger scanning but I've never used a park hopper. The whole thought really makes me cringe. I'm not sure why we are so accepting and willing to give up our right to privacy and freedoms. Let Disney figure out some other way to protect thier interests that doesn't involve erroding my freedom.

I had my fingerprints removed when I was with "the company." Fortuneately, as a personal friend of Bobby's, I am readily recognized by the CM's at the gate and allowed instant access. If there is a newbie who begins to irritate me, Goofy has been instructed to intervene before I have to take somebody out.

The scanners do not have the ability to specifically identify you and store any information about you. They do not read fingerprints, but are merely biometric scanners measuring certain parameters in your finger. There is no invasion of privacy nor are any of your freedoms being eroded.

I curious how many times you've taken a loan for a house or a car, how many credit cards you have, how many times you've applied for jobs. You voluntarily give up far more of your privacy in these situations than anything Disney can collect in their so called fingerprint scan. If it really bothers you that much don't go.

And I thought I was the most paranoid person on the board.

All types of admission has used this for a couple years now. If this bothers you, I guess you haven't been there since the bag search? Ridiculous as it is, it's alot more invading than the finger scan.

Over Mem. Day weekend, I got the "Deputy Dawg" guard who started to stick his hand in my bag to move stuff around. Talk about invasive!!! I told him (in a rather loud voice) to keep his hand out of there & asked him where his "stick" was to move items around? He could see I was getting ready to build up steam and cause a commotion, so he simply apologized and said to go thru. None of the security people have the right to put their hands on your items in your bags. They can ask you to remove items, but they themselves are not permitted to do so. If a "guard" gets testy, get his name and immediately go to guest relations.

Let me explain my thoughts ...
The right of individual privacy is essential to the well-being of a free society and shall not be infringed without the showing of a compelling state interest. I have a hard time understanding why Disney has a compelling reason greater than our state or country ? Sorry , no way.

The finger scan also carries risks for us in sitting on a database. How is the data protected? Who has access? Is access audited? I don't think any of us should have to take ANY risks with our identity to give Disney the advantage of taking less risks. They can hire more staff to manage the ticket issue and should get stronger about prosecuting those who use bad tickets as thefts. I'm sure this is a minority. Unfortunatly, this minority impacts all of us in that we are the ones being asked to submit to biometric finger scans. What next ? Retina scans, DNA samples, X rated x ray machines. IMO, I say let's draw a line in the sand right now. I would urge everyone to consider what giving up freedoms mean to us and future generations . Sometimes we should not do things that might appear to make sense because they set precedents. Your call.

With respect to the bag searches , I don't like it but I can understand and somewhat justify. Since 9/11, the world changed and this is a hefty price we are all paying. I do have concerns that Disney, being an American icon, could be at risk. For the safety of all the people who visit Disney (so many children) , I am willing to compromise and give up my right to keep the contents of my bag private and submit to this search so that we can be safer. I still don't like it and really wish we didn't have to compromise on this freedom. I put up with TSA all the time.

In response to one of the PP's questions, I have had 2 houses mortgages and 4 apartment buildings mortgaged / refinanced and have never been asked for a finger scan. I would not do busines with a company that required them. I've held 3 jobs and have never had a finger print / health exam. The background checks are intrusive enough.

I agree that we disclose too much information such as social security numbers . the back of the social security card CLEARLY states, NOT TO BE USED FOR IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES. We are told to protect it and keep it in a safe place LOL. The masses act like sheep, and their social security number just rolls of their lips easily whenever someone asks. WHO doesn't have our social security numbers ? Once we lose a freedom and privacy, it's very hard to go back.

I think this would make an interesting legal case. Initially, I would think ACLU. After reflecting, I wonder if a consumer attorney might be better.
Can Disney sell a ticket or vacation package inclusive of ticket(s) and then require that a consumer submit to biometric ? Would a consumer , be refused admittance ? Is this disclosed up front ? Would the ticket/ package be refunded in such a case. Personally, I'd like to see this new policy challenged. I wonder how it would shake out.

LKHomemail,

I think you may have the wrong idea about what is taking place. "You" are not sitting in a database. They have no idea who "you" are. They do, however, take a semi-unique biometric and associate it with a ticket number. Your name is not even a part of the equation. The system simply does not the ability to fully scan your fingerprint and associate it with all of your public and private data.
