Do any of you NJ DVCers that go during Jersey Week have any college aged kids as well? Here's my dilemma. We are planning an extended family vacation for November 2005. All of the children going will be grammar/middle school kids, so they will pretty much have the same days off. However, my DD will be a freshman in college, and I'm not sure if she'll have any days off except for Thanksgiving, and I don't think the rest of the family can go then(at least I know my brother can't get off then). I don't think I want DD to miss any extended time in class, but I don't want to exclude her, either.
Any thoughts, suggestions, etc? TIA

Sheri

I have friends who are both NJ teachers, and the year that their youngest was also in college (Rutgers) was the first time that they went to WDW as a couple over the NJEA convention time.

Sometimes college students make their schedules so they don't have classes on certain days and if that should be the case, maybe with no classes on Friday, your college student may luck out!

College schedules are fairly flexible. And many college teachers in NJ also attend NJEA and plan their classes accordingly.
If you decide to go and take your freshman out of classes (who knows....maybe she won't have any Thursday/Friday classes!!), the good news would be that students are given a complete syllabus of the course right off the bat.
Your daughter can check out what's going on that week right away.
Checking w/the instructor is always a good thought. Generally speaking (and this is really general!) most class work/lecture notes can be made up. Studio work and labs are harder to make up.
I would take a good look at her schedule and see what type of classes she has selected...any labs?
Contact the instructors via email. Many will send you the syllabus up front. This could answer your questions right away.
Good luck to you!
PS We'll be there that week, too. Our DS is an incoming college freshman. He decided that he'd skip this trip and stick to college life instead. :)

Far as I know, it's the week during NJEA convention...usually first or second week of November. Public schools are closed on Thurs & Friday that week, so many parents take advantage of a quick get away.

we been going for the past 10 yrs during jersey week
and have 2 more before dd flies the nest to college...

Thanks for the info. I forgot that many colleges don't have classes on Fridays, and sometimes Thursdays. I'm sure we'll work something out. We don't even know where she's going yet, so I won't be able to get her schedule, yet I have to book my dates in December of this year for the 11 month window. I'm sure it will work out. Thanks again!

Just want to clarify what Ksp said...

Jersey Week is definitely in November, however, there are THREE days off in the public schools that week. Election Day and 2 NJEA convention days. We Jerseyans like to come down then because our kids only miss out on 2 days of school. Hooray!!

Hey, SheriB.....

We might also be going for NJ week in 2005, so we might see you there! Reid would be in heaven if he actually went away with Zac!!

I have to say, we have gone for NJ week before and we love it there at that time of year....it might just become our standard time of year to visit WDW, now that the kids are in school!!!

I took off 2 days during college (very high academic school) to go to WDW with my family. I had no problem doing it for a couple of reasons.
1. I did not miss any labs.
2. I almost never missed any classes so I had a very good attendance record.
3. I had someone in each class that I could get notes from.
4. I had no classes on Fridays so I only missed 2 classes once.
5. I notified my professors well in advance of a family trip.
6. I was not struggling at all in any of the classes I missed.
7. I did not go for the whole family trip, just flew down for a 3-day weekend.
I think you can pull this off, but be understanding if your DD must cancel if she is struggling at all or the trip conflicts with something mandatory like an exam.

Thanks shelly3girls. Hopefully her schedule will not conflict with our trip. I'd hate for her to have to stay behind, since my entire side of the family will be there.

Bobbi-that would be cool for Zac and Reid. Zac may have a brother or sister by then, too.

I also have a friend who's son is getting married in WDW that week, so I may be able to see her too (and sneak a peek at a WDW wedding!).

Just took a look at our school calendar in Hopewell Twp; we only get Thursday/Friday in our neck of the woods. Oh, well.
Guess our DD will have to give up a day/two of school. Think she'll mind terribly? (no way! she can't wait to go!)
I'm jealous of your 3 days off, DVCDawn!

Ksp,

Most years we get only 2 days -- for the NJEA convention. This year, however, because it's a presidential election we get election day off too. So, my daughter has school that week on Monday and Wednesday -- Tuesday , Thursday and Friday are off.

In our town, many polling places are in the schools and the Board of Education felt that they couldn't ensure the safety of the students what with all the terror alerts, etc.

I know one thing for sure -- we'll be going to WDW during Jersey Week 2008!

DVCDawn,
Enjoy that extra day off this year :)
Have you been down there during Jersey week other years? This will be our first time down during that time of year.

gene21fan, sounds like you enjoy that time of year.
We're definitely looking forward to the visit!! :bounce:

im a sophomore in college at Rowan U in new jersey---i took of a couple of days last year f or a vacation and had no problem...i just let the professors know and did naything i needed to do before i left..then just got the notes when i got back

My husband goes to William Paterson U. at night taking 2-3 classes a semester and he has taken off a week when we go to WDW every fall, so misses a week of classes. It has never been a big deal for him.
He gets notes from another student, and has the syllabus so he knows what he has to do.
He is an accountant and even though he works full time, he still has never had any trouble catching up in his free time.
