For life...take three...... NEW THREAD ALERT. PG 243

Beau Is not doing well. Hey has acute kidney failure, some cells of some type that belong in the kidneys have passed into his bladder and he’s expelling them. He is mildly dehydrated and he had not eaten in over a week and was only drinking a little as he would throw it up. They said he threw up because his body wasn’t filtering the toxins because of the kidney failure. His stomach lining was very inflamed and that’s why he wouldn’t eat. They are going to treat him with an aggressive fluid therapy and Zantacs for his stomach and some other medication to repair any ulcerations in his stomach from the inflammation. If he doesn’t begin to respond they will stop the treatment as they are not going to prolong the inevitable and they will ask us for permission to put him down. That is so sad and breaks our hearts but we don’t’ want him to suffer either and she said he would be suffering with that stomach and not being able to eat and drink. So in the long run, for his sake, that is what they would do.
I can’t help but think that emergency vet did this to me. We took him to him as he wasn’t eating and drinking and he had collapsed his back legs. He told us that Beau first of all was infested with fleas and that our house had to be infested. Beau did not have a flea on him and we had none in the house. We are always very careful with that. If we were infested we’d have been seeing them, been bitten by them, etc. but neither happened. Also he said he had a disk problem / disk disease. So he gave him a shot for the fleas to kill the fleas (which he did not have) and a shot for pain, then he gave him a prescription for Rimadyl 25mg twice a day. They are anti inflammatory pills and he did start to act better and eat and drink some but I think now it may have been due to the pain shot not that medication. I think the medication is what inflamed his stomach as when I called our regular vet and asked about how to get him to eat or drink and told her about that medication she said that’s pretty harsh and maybe his stomach is upset from it so try to get some Maalox or Mylanta in him. I did but he threw it up. Then yesterday after his exam she said his stomach was so inflamed that is probably why he was not eating. So my thought is that emergency vet giving him that Rimadyl is what caused the stomach problems, so he quit eating, then quit drinking as it hurt too much and made him throw up. Then I think the lack of fluids he was taking in caused his kidneys to begin to fail. I really think he’s at fault and that Beau would not have gone downhill like this so fast had it not been for him. I feel whatever made him fall down the first time should have just been treated with the pain shot and make him comfortable until Monday when we could have taken him to our own vet and skipped that harsh medication.
:sad1::sad1::sad1::sad1:

Please say a little prayer that he'll respond. I talk to the doctor again today at 11 a.m. so I am praying hard she'll say he made some improvement. Last night they had to put him on a heating pad as his body temperature was dropping. So that brought it back up but I hope he can keep it up on his own.

QM, just the way you describe Beau makes me so sad and my heart goes out to you both. Please keep us posted as to what the vet says. Will continue to pray

Thanks Carla, I cried when I talked to the vet as it didn't sound good but then she said she's seen dogs in worse shape than Beau come back and be healthy again so that gave me a little hope. Thanks for the prayers he really needs them.

I missed him so much last night. I couldn't even fall asleep until really late, I just kept thinking about him, then thinking I heard him walking around the kitchen, it was just so sad.

How about painting pumpkins? We cut out body parts from magazines (nose, eyes, glasses, lips, teeth, ears, hair, hats, etc) and then you put them on the pumpkins with either glue or just paint. They are hysterical.

AWESOME Picture!!!!

Glad to hear your daughter is over the flu. You guys get better, too!

I'm sitting here crying for you. Please know you are doing the best for your doggie.

Thanks Marsha, I am so sad and feeling like I didn't do enough and didn't do it soon enough. But I can't do the "what if's" as it will just kill me! :sad1:

great pic Mike! I love your costume!

I SO had other comments but I can't think of anything because I'm thinking about poor Frasier and Beau!!! I absolutely think we can cry over our animals. Don't feel you can't. I hope that they both get better soon. :grouphug:

Thanks Cheri. I'm even crying now at work, nervous and scared for 11 a.m. to come when I talk to the vet again to see how he made out after 24 hours on treatments. I hope he's shown some improvement.

I know! I never have known poor Kelly to go to bed that early! I hope you're feeling better today girl

Awww, I miss you too! We always seem to miss each other

Oh Karen, my heart was breaking as I was reading this. I have literally walked in your shoes and know how it feels. Frasier has been SO sick that I didn't know what to do. I really hope your Vet is figuring things out and taking good care of Beau. Frasier had to be in for 5 days on a continuous IV. I hope they do the same for Beau. I've been thinking of him all day and hope to hear from you soon!

Yeah, I cannot imagine it myself. I almost had to and I did not handle things so well. That really scares me for the future :sad2:

Thanks Betsy, I hope they both get well and stay well. It's heartbreaking and so hard to deal with when a pet is sick. They can't tell you what is wrong and they don't understand why they feel like they do and they look at you with those big sad eyes as if to say, please Mommy help me. God that hurts so much. You dont' realize how much you can come to care about your pets until something is wrong with them.

What's up chickies? Not too much here. Gotta get out and about today and run some errands.

The boys are going to receive the h1n1 nasal vax at school tomorrow. I'm a little nervous because my doctor said since it's the live virus the rest of us could catch it from them. :scared1: Abby hasn't had her vax yet... she is the one I'm worried about catching it since she has asthma. I can't get it... the egg allergy. I don't think Tom plans on getting it. :guilty:

Anyway... I hope that Kelly, Jamie and Michele are all feeling better! And I hope the doggies are better too.

Have a great day everyone! :goodvibes

Oh man, I would probably have the same theory about the emergency vet. How sucktastic!! I will continue to pray that you get some good news when you talk to the vet this morning. Please keep us update.

Hiya Nicole. I will pray that no one catches h1n1 from the boys when they get their vaccine tomorrow. I know it's hard to be sick when you have asthma. Especially with the flu. Chris tried to get it over the weekend but they wouldn't give it to him. You would think in his line of work they would want those guys to have it. But nnnoooooooooooo. *sigh* I can't find anywhere with the stinkin' vaccine either. So I guess I'm screwed. I just plan on drinking Emergn-C before I get on the plane in November for Thanksgiving and crossing my fingers that I don't happen to catch something being re-circulated in the air.

Hope you have a good day :goodvibes

Hey Nicole

I am really surprised they are telling the boys to get the nasal vaccine. We were told if anyone in house has asthma, not get the mist. Everyone to get the shot

Thanks Nicole

I went home from work...was too exhausted to function

I went to walgreen take care clinic just to make sure was not getting sick again. Chest and lungs were clear. only small fever 99.1 I am at the tail end of the seasonal flu,

She said my body is just tired and needs rest, as flu takes a lot out of a person.

Now poor steve is sick

I hope you, Abby and Tom don't get the virus from the the boys. They are lucky their school got it in. It seems you can't get it anywhere around here and so far Kely can't get it for Trent. I can't even get the seasonal allergy shots here, no one can get the vaccine!

Thanks for the good wishes about the doggies. I am about to post an update on Beau and its good news, thank God and everyone who prayed for him!

I just talked to the Vet. She was encouraged as Beau seemed so much better today, not that he is out of the woods, but there were some excellent signs; he seemed to be feeling better and his eyes were brighter and more alert, his gums turned back to a nice pink like they should be, he had a little bit of his playfulness and attitude that he always had. They really pumped him full of liquids throughout the night and he peed and peed and peed a lot. She said that was a very good sign because if he was taking in all that liquid then didn’t pee much and wanted to just go back and lay down that would not have been a good sign, but she said he’s well housebroken and would not go in his cage or bed so they took him outside and he peed buckets and then still had some left to walk around and mark his spot as boy dogs will do. She said having the interest to do that was good. His body temperature has returned to normal, they turned off the heating pad and so far he is maintaining his temp on his own. His extremities are not so cold like they were yesterday. He did not vomit at all during the night or this morning. They are giving him medicine for the upset, inflamed stomach and it seems to be working but she said he has to now start eating and drinking on his own. It’s not her goal to pump him full of liquid and nourishment through an IV continuously. She said they will re-check his blood work and urine tomorrow and have a better idea if his kidney function is improving as far as what is in the blood and urine. But she was very encouraged by his attitude, behavior, etc. this morning. He wagged his tail at them which was good. I asked about the medicine that the ER vet gave him and she said that is very harsh and very well “could” have caused his upset stomach. She said when she prescribes that she warns the owner to watch the dog for them to stop eating or drinking and any nausea or vomiting and then to discontinue it if that happens. Well that vet did not warn us. I said does he show sign of disc disease and she said well not at this time but he “could” have had it then. Yea right. She would have restricted his movement, which that vet did tell us and we did that but the medicine tore up his stomach. So I said so that could be the reason he quit eating and she said yes and I said then the lack of drinking as he got worse and threw up was probably the cause of the kidney failure and she said yes it very well could have been. So as far as I’m concerned that ER vet caused all this. We paid him $157 to almost kill our dog and then have to pay to get him well by our vet. I wonder if you can do a malpractice suit against a vet?

That just made me so damn mad. I wish I could do something and at least get the $157 back. I’d like to sue the other Vet but you probably can’t. One won’t speak up against another one. I think he should pay our vet bill for getting Beau better and for his pain and suffering, not to mention ours.

I'm very encouraged but I am trying not to get my hopes up too much as the vet said let's just take it one day at a time, so that is what I am trying to do. Once he has his blood work and urine analysis again tomorrow I'll know more.

Thanks everyone for your good wishes and prayers for him. I think they are working!:grouphug:

I hope you are resting now and that is why you aren't on line. You probably went back to work too soon, you weren't quite fully recovered yet. Get some rest tonight before you decide if you are going to go to work tomorrow or not.:love:

QM -- soooo glad to hear this news that Beau is showing signs of improvement. Let's pray that it continues.

As for the vet, I suppose if you really wanted to, you can sue just about anyone in small claims court or even higher. All it takes is a lawyer and a judge that won't throw out your case.

However, it'll cost you money and time and only you can decide if it's worth it to you.

Instead you might want to do any of the following -- contact the Better Business Bureau on-line and write a complaint; write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper; find out if others have issued complaints against this vet (you might want to ask your vet informally if he know whether others have been dissatisfied with that ER vet), if so, then contact the newspaper or local radio and tv stations ... they could do an expose.

However, all of those above things involve a lot of time and money and you would be the only one fighting for your case. As your vet said, they are all in the same professional circles and rarely like to get involved in disparaging other vets, for fear that one day it may be them. Also, it would be hard to actually "prove" anything ... you are working with "what ifs"...

This might just be a case where you know that God will deal with that vet one day (if the vet was being malicious or spiteful, etc)...

I'm sorry, QM, you are going through this...

Yeah, I probably should have stayed out one more day

But it hsard being a temp and not getting any sick time

If they would just hire me, I would not have this darn problem :headache:

Karen, I'm so glad to hear that Beau is improving. I will continue to pray. I hope he makes a full recovery. Shame on that Emergency Vet! If that is what really made him sick I would be really angry too but I really don't think you would win a law suit. It's your word against theirs really. :confused3

Thanks Marsha, that is all so true. I doubt we will bother to sue the vet but I know he will get a phone call. I may try to contact the Better Business Bureau though and out of my own curiosity find out if they had other complaints. It's just so upsetting to watch your pet go throught something that wasn't necessary for him to go through. If that other vet had just given him a more thorough exam, done a urine analysis or something I would have felt better but all he did was feel around, then bend his head and twist it every which way and then push it down hard and then he flinched. Well I would have flinched too had he pushed my head down to my butt practically, that would be uncomfortable. Then suddenly oh it's a disk disease. I think he's a middle of the night ER vet because he can't be a regular vet during the day as he's not good enough.

OK done venting. I'm happy Beau showed signs of improvement. Today I have to call again at 11 a.m. and will see if his blood work and urine analysis have improved, that will be the main thing to show he's going to recover, not just improve because he's on an IV. He needs to now eat and drink on his own next.

Thanks for caring Marha!

Thanks Carla, I appreciate all the prayers. The results of today's blood work and urine analysis will be the deciding factor. Naturally he's going to feel a little better with nourishment and liquid in him from the IV but she has to be sure his kidneys are filtering the toxins out as well as get him to want to eat and drink on his own now. So the prayers will help that.

Are you staying home again? I see you online here and it's almost 10 a.m. there. It is hard not getting sick time, I know, remember I was a temp at McKesson for over two years and then in FL for a few months at Harcourt so I know how that is, you get sick, you don't get paid, you go on vacation, you dont' get paid. Well make it up next week when you are feeling better, maybe an hour or two a day.

Feel better honey. Let me know if you'll be in work today or not.

I love you xoxox:love::hug:

I had off today anyway for Trent Halloween parade and party. I am helper, so that why I took off

I already told my boss I will be working more hours to make up all time lost.

I did not even hit 10 hrs this week..Nuts :scared1:

BTW.....glad to hear Beau is improving. Praying he continues to show signs of improvement

Well off to do some work, the little that I have. Afterall, here they consider me a major moron as they are now just giving me the gopher crap work, hired a new girl and are giving her a nice office of her own, decorated it for her with pictures on wall and teaching her thoroughly unlike me when they just threw everything at me and said this is how you do t his, this is how you do that, everyone of these will be different, you can't do this or that with this one, etc. Then I was totally confused and had to keep asking questions but I'd rather ask than do something wrong and they acted like it was an inconvenience that I was asking. So when I made a few mistakes due to lack of training, they took those duties away and kept medoing the poop work. Now rather than train me properly, they hire someone new to do the interesting work that you need to use your brain with and they are training her like crazy, very thoroughly as I can hear them. I've heard them tell her things they've still never explained to me. I am so furious not to mention hurt. I wish the economy would improve and I could just wak out and get another job. I just hate it here anymore.

Thanks for letting me vent!:grouphug:

Oh yea I remember, just wasn't thinking about the date. I hope you have your camera all charged up, I want pictures! Have fun helping and enjoying the kids. I always loved that for you and Gary when I was a room mother.

That's a shame, 10 hours sucks. You need a lot more than that. Glad the boss has no problem with you making it up.

Have fun today! :love::lovestruc:hug::cutie:
