Women, independents help Kerry erase 9-point deficit

By David Robinson

LITTLE ROCK - Sen. John Kerry has pulled even with President Bush in Arkansas after being down 9 points, according to a new poll for the Arkansas News Bureau and Stephens Media Group.

More good news! The DesMoines register has also endorsed Kerry. Here's a portion of the endorsement...

Yes, Kerry is liberal. But what's to fear from a liberal president? That he would run big deficits? That he would increase federal spending? That he would expand the power of the federal government over individuals' lives? Nothing Kerry could do could top what President Bush has already done in those realms.

I love that one!

ARGHH!!!! Twice now I have gotten the email that includes an article basically saying that the election of Sen. Kerry will lead to the downfall of America as we know it. My standard response to the people who have sent it to me has been if you are going to vote for Bush, do it because you believe in his programs, not because he's scared you in to thinking that if you don't, it's going to be the end of the world. This governing through the politics of fear is making me crazy.

If you haven't seen the article, here it is:

This was written in the Daily Record (Ellensburg's paper) on Wed. Oct. 6, 2004. It was written by Mathew (only one t) Manweller who is a Central Washington University political science professor.

The title of the article was "Election determines fate of nation."

"In that this will be my last column before the presidential lection
there will be no sarcasm, no attempts at witty repartee. The topic is too serious, and the stakes are too high.

This November we will vote in the only election during our lifetime
that will truly matter. Because America is at a once-in-a-eneration
crossroads, more than an election hangs in the balance. Down one path lies retreat, abdication and a reign of ambivalence.
Down the other lies a nation that is aware of its past and accepts the daunting obligation its future demands. If we choose poorly, the consequences will echo through the next 50 years of history.
If we, in a spasm of frustration, turn out the current occupant of
the White House, the message to the world and ourselves will be
twofold. First, we will reject the notion that America can do big
things. Once a nation that tamed a frontier, stood down the Nazis and stood upon the moon, we will announce to the world that bringing democracy to the Middle East is too big of a task for us. But more significantly, we will signal to future presidents that as voters, we are unwilling to tackle difficult challenges, preferring caution to boldness, embracing the mediocrity that has characterized other civilizations.

The defeat of President Bush will send a chilling message to future presidents who may need to make difficult, yet unpopular decisions.

America has always been a nation that rises to the demands of history regardless of the costs or appeal. If we turn away from that legacy, we turn away from who we are.

Second, we inform every terrorist organization on the globe that the lesson of Somalia was well learned. In Somalia we showed terrorists that you don't need to defeat America on the battlefield when you can defeat them in the newsroom. They learned that a wounded America can become a defeated America. Twenty-four-hour news stations and daily tracing polls will do the heavy lifting, turning a cut into a fatal blow. Except that Iraq is Somalia times 10. The election of John Kerry will serve notice to every terrorist in every cave that the soft underbelly of American power is the timidity of American voters.

Terrorists will know that a steady stream of grizzly photos for CNN is all you need to break the will of the American people. Our own self-doubt will take it from there. Bin Laden will recognize that he can topple any American administration without setting foot on the homeland.

It is said that America's W.W.II generation is its 'greatest
generation.' But my greatest fear is that it will become known as America's 'last generation.' Born in the bleakness of the Great Depression and hardened in the fire of WW II, they may be the last American generation that understands the meaning of duty, honor and sacrifice. It is difficult to admit, but I know these terms are spoken with only hollow detachment by many (but not all) in my generation. Too many citizens today mistake 'living in America' as 'being an American.' But America has always been more of an idea than a place. When you sign on, you do more than buy real estate. You accept a set of values and responsibilities.

This November, my generation, which has been absent too long, must grasp the obligation that comes with being an American, or fade into the oblivion they may deserve. I believe that 100 years from now historians will look back at the election of 2004 and see it as the decisive election of our century. Depending on the outcome, they will describe it as the moment America joined the ranks of ordinary nations; or they will describe it as the moment the prodigal sons and daughters of the greatest generation accepted their burden as caretakers of the City on the Hill."

:wave2: Hello fellow Kerry supporters! Back from Vegas only a couple hundred lighter but glad to see you are all doing so well on the front page (with a little help from our Bush-supporting counterparts who can't seem to help themselves).

Shortbun - keep at it! One vote at a time is how we'll win this. Good for you for helping to "get out the vote" - at least one thing I think we all agree on.

PG - Yes! Formerly right-wing newspapers endorsing Kerry is a definite good sign!

It looks like it'll come down to PA, OH, and FL. FL looks to be a tie right now but PA and OH are going slightly Kerry

http://www.electoral-vote.com/

Close race with only 9 more days to go - keep the faith!!!!

We have been loaning out our Fahrenheit 911 dvd to friends on the fence, and my husband and I both wrote some letters to the editor of the local newspaper. Does anyone else have any persuasive suggestions? I mean besides discussing the issues-- and buying pizza, of course.

I'm planning on seeing Kerry on Thursday at our state capitol square :). I have a general admission ticket, but I'm trying to score a ticket a little closer to Kerry. I'll make sure to post pictures from the event!

Thats great, you guys! I have my Kerry bumper sticker on my car. I have been counting how many Bush signs and stickers that I see.

When I drive through the nicer neighborhoods, I see more Kerry stickers. When I drive through the working class, blue collar ones I see more Bush stickers. I'm not exactly sure who has more though.:D :D

I was suppose to have my tonsil removed on 11/2...but backed it up a week. Wouldn't miss voting for the world! With PA being a key state swing state it is even more important. I think I'll have to consider the running around the block naked screaming with joy!!

Lol, I'm in PA too. Thats why I was so worried about which way our state has been swinging. Thank you for putting off your surgery! Lets hope our state swings the "Kerry" way!:sunny:

I also have a Kerry bumper sticker onmy car. I don't have a yard for a sign. :(

I saw a car the other day that had a Kerry/Edwards flag on it. :)

Hi minniepumpernickel! Good to see you on here today!

Oh yeah...

GO KERRY!

(BTW to all- I just planted some fall flowers in my front yard to greet my guests when they come over on Nov. 2nd to witness the defeat!)

I have had 2 Kerry yard signs but they've been stolen. The local county Demo headquarters has replaced so many stolen signs they've run out so I put the two Veterans for Kerry signs I got at the rally in St Louis after the debate in their place I've had to rig stakes for them however. Oh and I put dog poop all over the edges and the stakes so the fools who try to get them will get a stinky surprise!

In two small cities in my state the Kerry signs are being burned (doused with lighter fluid and set afire.) It won't stop us though. It's only making people more angry and the word is spreading! I don't care why they vote for Kerry as long as they do.

Hi rcyannacci, nice to see you too!:sunny:

crazyforgoofy- Lol, that is so funny, what you did to your signs. :D

I wonder if your part of the country is experiencing more vandalism, or something? I drove down to Wash, DC with all of my "liberal" stickers and I got no harassment. That is really scary what you have mentioned.:(

The scary part is who ever takes 2 out of the last big 3...Ohio, PA, and FL will probably win the election. Lets hope they fix those voting booths in Fl!

+ 5 more for Kerry!

My 79 year old grandmother got out in the rain today(no flu shot by the way! :p ) to cast her vote for Kerry with me, my brother, my dad and my mother!

Just wanted to let all you know that we (Me DH and 2 DD's) are going to see John Kerry tomorrow AM in Dover NH!! Can't wait to see our next US President in person!

Lucky you denise! Take lots of lots of pics and post them so the rest of us can live vicariously through you!

All I've seen was Edwards in a very brief stop during the primaries...although that was pretty good!;)

Good heavens! I just skimmed through the voter fraud thread...

Sounds like a lot of people are getting their whines all lined up for a Kerry win!!!! :rotfl:

I hope they know that the Dem's will give their complaints just about as much weight as they did ours in 2000....

zip...squat...zero......

Of course there's one big difference between their hand wringing and our complaints about 2000....We had a legitimate gripe!!!:rotfl:

It certainly does!

I'd offer them some cheese to go with their whine but I'm not feeling magnanimous.
