Update #1 DD's haircut
I made an appt with my sister stylist. He only had one open appt so I let dd have it. She really needed a haircut (split ends).I told him what type of cut. I told him I wasnt happy with the cut and felt it was uneven and choppy. I pointed out the areas and he mentioned more blending and clean it up. I also told him that I didnt want the shortest layer any shorter and wasnt sure if it could be fixed without going shorter. I told him I want the layers to look good if dd straightened it or wears it curled. DD had slpit ends so told him to cut off
2- 2 1/2 inches off the bottom.

So I told him thats what I want but look at her hair and tell me what you think, and if its uneven or what. He pulled up a lyer from the front and one from the back and said the back layer is shorter than the front which I could see and it was noticeable. The look on his face let me know. I told him I've seen your work and do what you can I trust you.
On the phone I was quote $25 for a cut.

He gets to work and finishes. Then I hear him ask dd14 ..Do you want me to blow dry your hair? DD said Yes.
I'm thinking oh heck how much is this going to cost me. Plus he washed her hair. He blow drys her hair using a big huge round brush. It was smoothing the hair and it was looking good. The customer next to dd told her she had beautiful hair. DD's hair was looking good before it was even finished. All he did was blow dry it. no flat iron or curling iron and dd's hair looked GREAT!!!!!!! Her hair even looked longer. the shortest layer that I was worried about was no wear to be found. the new shortest layer was actually longer. I was so happy for dd but also jealous that I have to wait to get my uneven choppy hair fixed-lol!

So its time to pay and I'm thinking oh boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I asked how much is the total. He's response is "oh its $25"

in my head i'm screaming OMG $25!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If i had gone anywhere else I would have paid major $$$$$

He's the owner of his own shop and I know many say you dont tip the owner but I must say I have never been so happy to tip someone-lol! He really deserve much more than what he charged.

DD went to school today and everyone was asking her what she did to her hair ( she usually flat irons it but it had more body today, she woke up and just ran her fingers through it cuz it still looked good ). She just said she got it cut . She got many compliments even from boys-lol! I told her , that her hair looked totally different with body and it looked so healthy and bouncy and that it looked darker like she colored it.

Tonight she washed it and she couldnt get that smooth look. Luckily I bought a huge round brush and tried doing her hair but I need to buy the brush the stylist used. The brush I bought from walmart doesnt have the opening on the end so the heat doesnt go through but it look good but not perfect . I told her the shining spray he used might be something we need to order to finsh it off.
I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to try this stylist. Looking at dd's layers were like being in layer heaven I havent seen layers like that since I use to go to the expensive salon ( I have thick wavy hair)

End of update #1
I'll be back to tell about my cut and color.

---------------------------------------

I'm posting here because it includes budget

I have long layered hair. My hair is about 1 1/2 to 2 inches past where i buckle my bra. the shortest layer is suppose to be at my shouldars but I'm finding several shorter ones.

I've been with my current hair stylist for about 2 years. When I started going to her I was happy. Three hair
cuts ago I noticed a change in my hair and my dd's we both have the layers but dd's a lil shorter. Well we got home wash our hair dried it, flat ironed it . DD comes in all panic and says look at my hair it all choppy and uneven. I tell her maybe its because we part it to the side so the layers are shorter. It did look weird

I do my hair and the same thing. My thought it maybe because she parted it in the middle and we part our hair to the side thats why the difference. I curl my hair so its not noticeable but I cant wear my hair stright because it look choppy and uneven.

I let it go.

Next visit I tell her and she says thats weird humm. I'm glad you told me because I hope i didnt do that to anyone else. I tell her well it also happened to my dd too. Then she says now that you mention it I had someone else(relative) tell me the same thing but i didnt think anything of it.

So i tell her I dont want it choppy, I part my hair to the side so keep that in mind. She cut my hair and dd's hair and it was better but still choppy and lil weird uneven looking. I've also noticed that I have a difficult time styling my hair. It drives me crazy and looking at other pictures from other stylist it doesnt look good.

My question is, are there different types of layers? I want nice layers that if i wear my hair stright it looks nice. How can i explain this.
Thinking back to my previous stylist( she quit and got a higher paying job) she would cut my hair and dd's hair the same. DDs hair from the back looked like it wasnt layered unless I pulled pieces to curl it then the layers would sperate so is that a blended layer? my hair was the same and when i curled just the tips it looked so pretty and if i curled more it just flowed nice

The current person i go to is more affordable for dd and I $15 each piece plus tip(same price and the one that quit and she did an awesome job)

- how do i explain it to her or do i give up go somewhere else?

Another hair stylist he was awesome but expensive. I stop going to him because everytime I went he would change the price and try charging me more. Last draw was he charged me the amount as If I were getting a cut and color but i only got a color and he said oh well i had to use more dye.

I'm tempted to go back but at $25 each plus tip its gonna be more $$ . DD and I do like the current person but my hair is driving me nuts. If she cut it like in the beginning then I'd stay

Sounds like she is chopping into the layer she is holding up. Sometimes used to create a volume, or choppy look instead of straight layering. Does she make swift scissoring into the strands she is holding up?

I would ask for horizontal layer cut, NOT vertical coming out from the head.

If it is horizontal they layers lay even, if it is verticle there are gaps in the layers.

____ _____. This way out from the head, not this way ||||||

The first time I notice the weird choppy layers I notice she had the scissors point in toward the hair she was holding like a snipping. does that make sense? I also notice that my layers go longer in the front and short to the back at and angle. so even if I wore my hair parted in the middle the back layers are still short than the front. I also got a side bang but just seperating that is driving me nuts because of the differnt layers toward the side of the bang.
I did tell her the 2nd time that I dont want it choppy or cut with scissor point inward toward hair so the choppiness wasnt as bad as the 1st time but still not right but better than the last.

What are caps ? 1st time with the choppiness she mentioned she had to cut it a certain way because it will cause caps and that was told by her boss she said. Thats when I noticed the difference in her cuts. I mentioned it to her and she didnt know what I was talking about or she said that to cover up if she chopped a piece to much.

so horizontal layers will look nice if I wear it straight?

Honestly we arent difficult to deal with until these few times and I was super nice about it and I always tip, unless she hates doing layers-lol!

I am not a stylist, but whenever I get my hair cut, my stylist has me part my hair after she washes it. I always part mine to the side, and that is how she cuts it. I have layers, too, and if she cut my hair while parted down the middle, I would look ridiculous! :rotfl: My hair is chin length, though, so it would be very, very obvious. Good luck! :goodvibes

I do not want to sound mean or anything at all, but I have found that with hair - you get what you pay for.

Go to a more experienced stylist that is used to styling your type of hair. Especially if it is curly and requires straightening or keratin treatments.

I know that people can get away with paying a lot less than this, but I end up paying about $125+ for a cut and color and that is a steal from what I used to pay. And that color was not all over color - just to cover my grey strands at the roots! My stylist left her old salon, so she does not charge what she used to charge at the old place. Kids cuts are usually much less.

I would find someone who is doing a better job. Sounds like your getting a rush cheap job. Find the best person you can get into and stick with them.

I do have a wave to my hair but i straighten it with flat iron. She use to do a great job and I was happy with it but I dont know what happend the last 2 times. The previous lady I went to worked at the same place and the price was $13 at that time and she did a wonderful job

The other guy I use to go to before I found the current place is a higher end and I'd get my hair color and a week later my grays were starting to show and I couldnt pay that much money for glaze color that wasnt hiding my grays

Seriously, you are willing to put up with this to save $15?

Sorry, but she appears not to know what she's doing and I think it's time to move on.

And you are getting a good deal at $25 if you were happy LOL!

It sounds like she is off of her game for some reason. I would be going someplace else. Around my area you can't even get a little boys haircut for $15. I pay $45 for a cut and if I do color it cost about $125.

I'm not a stylist at all but I have the same type of style that do and I just wanted to say that my hair does not look choppy at all, I think you need to find someone else.....I've been to Great Clips and not had my hair look choppy.....lol

I'm not a stylist either, but I have had a similar problem with my hair in the past. I now get my hair cut at a Toni & Guy hair school close to my house. Because the instructor checks over everything, I not only get a great haircut, but I also hear some of the terminology. I now know that there are several different kinds of layers. What I have now is called inversion layers and I'm happy with this since my hair doesn't look choppy. Before that, I had square layers and it didn't look good on my long hair. I don't know if this info helps you any at all, but I thought it may.

I was telling my daughter last night that I think its time to move on. Dh goes to the same place so he will continue to go.I told him be prepared when she ask where we've been-lol! He gets his haircut by anyone who is available.

Like someone posted the stylist is off her game , not sure whats going on but I had always been happy with the cuts she has given me until recently.

My sister wants me to try her guy. He charges $68 for the works cut and color. Her hair always looks nice and he does nice coloring. I just dont know if I want to make the 45 min drive. The one i use to go to is about 5 min away but his coloring is expensive especially because it doesn hold

To add my two cents: I vote for move on. And I don't believe you have to go to someone who is more expensive to get a better job. Anyone with good training who cares about the quality of their work should be able to give you what you want. After all, there are also bad stylists who are expensive. What I think it's most telling about your retelling of the events, is how she recalled how "someone else had mentioned something like that to her but she didn't pay attention" (I paraphrase) The fact that she wasn't too embarrassed to tell you that speaks volumes.

I am a stylist (for almost 20 years). Previously I was an educator for a major product line and did in-salon classes as well as hair shows. I would say it's time to move on. You have told her you are unhappy and nothing changed.

Just to clarify, typically it will not cause your hair to look "choppy" if a stylist point cuts into the layers. Yes, if they go nuts and cut chunks out it will. In fact, point cutting helps to blend lines of weight often times giving a more blended appearance to layers. They look "softer" typically. Not everyone likes this but if done correctly, it gives a really nice look to a cut. Also, most stylists will cut areas in one direction and cross-check their cut the opposite direction to make sure everything is even.

My advice is to take a picture to a new stylist. Recommendations from friends who have great hair are usually best. Make sure your new stylist does a consultation with you. By this, I mean that he or she looks at your hair before it is shampooed. Tell that person what you like and don't like. They should ask you things like, "How much time do you like to spend styling it?, Do you blow dry, flat iron, air dry? What do you like the most and least? What kinds of products do you use?" They should really look at your hair before it is washed. Also, I strongly recommend that you have it styled there. A really good stylist will give you tips on what products will work best for your hair and tips on how to get a great looking style at home. I cannot tell you how often I cut after the hair is dry too before I style it. You can see how the hair will fall better and sometimes you need to "dry cut" it to give your client the best look for them.

Good Luck! Breaking up is hard to do but sometimes it's really needed. :)

The choppy layers are not for everyone but my daughter loves them as well as the slanted bangs. Take a picture of what you want and explain it to her.

Same here, and I actually switched to this salon because it's so much cheaper than my old salon ($70 cut). I payed $35 for my kids when they were little.

I am a "retired" Stylist .Time to move on. I would look around, I have walked up to strangers & asked them where they get their haircut before. I have had people ask me also where I get mine done. Maybe you can give up 1 cut per year to off set the cost of a pricer cut.

My question is, are there different types of layers?

...Yes!!!:thumbsup2

Another hair stylist he was awesome but expensive.

Wanted to to note, I am a frugalista in every way, but I do believe you get what you pay for, especially haircuts....I had to switch hairdressers too,I gave her 3 cuts to get it right, but it just never was(she seemed to manage short hair ok, but not long layers)
I was paying 28+tip for the cheaper place, now I pay 50. per cut,and my hairdresser gets it right.:thumbsup2 There are different levels of skill, and what the 1st hairdresser told me wasn't possible(longer layers) the 2nd one did with ease.
Since I don't spend much on makeup,clothing,style products,etc, I consider a good cut essential for looking good.:thumbsup2

I am going to have to agree with others who are saying that pretty much you get what you pay for. I thikn you go t lucky witrh your previous stylist. No one with and real talket for cutting hair is going to continue doing it for $15 a cut for long, and those that are working in those types of places are ther for a reason. I don't think she really knows what she is doing.
I pay $85 for color cut and styple for me and $25 for just cut and style for DD, but this is an old family friend that has been doing my hair for 20 years. Most in her salon charge $35 for cut and upwards of $100 for color, and we are not a high cost of living area. I think it is time to move on and find someone more qualified, but you are probably going to have to pay more

And sometimes you can pay a lot and still get a bad cut.

My hairstylist was working with me for two years and I thought knew exactly what I wanted. She was personally annoying, but the cut was good. I think it was a $50 cut.

Then one day - all that hair I'd been growing out got far too short and thin in the wrong places. Maybe she was having a bad day, but a bad day with hair should mean that you undercut your customers, not overcut them!

She's out. New stylist is in.

I paid $100 for a color and asked for reddish - got golden. Paying a lot doesn't mean that you'll get what you want (although it often means a big apology and no charge if you didn't get it).
