For ebayers..new paypal rule starting Aug

Right now, I have 2 paypal accunts, 1 premier and 1 personal. My ebay auctions are paypal only (but I haven't sold that much lately). I have the personal account linked to ebay, but then I state in my auctions that if the buyer is paying by credit card, to contact me for the paypal email address. I put the credit card paypal email address on my invoices. Haven't had a problem with this yet, but I wonder if this will still be allowed?!

You can't put it in your auctions..that is also part of the announcement.

Can't seem to find this Policy Update page.
Can you send a link.

What I posted, was the short version..here is the full version. It's the second announcement on the announcement page. Here you go:

The way I look at it----Paying fees to Paypal and Ebay is just the price of doing business. It's MUCH cheaper than owning a shop and paying rent, utilities, etc... I think upgrading to a Premier account a year ago was the SMARTEST business move I made--and the amount of money MORE you will make by accepting credit cards will FAR outweigh the extra fees that you will incur--the added fees are not that much more.

I like Disneysnowflake's quote:
"Oh well, where else but ebay can I find a $2 toy at a flea market and sell it for $58. Even after fees I still made $50 profit. That will pay for something nice at WDW"

Just as an FYI, that as a buyer, I stay away from auctions like this (or worse yet that accept Paypal, but say to contact them for paypal address). You lose protection as a buyer if you use Paypal that is not connected to the auction. I've heard to many horror stories of items not being received or not being in the correct condition to be willing to give up my buyer protection. Also, this is what I do like about paying by credit cards is that there is a second layer of protection for the buyer if items don't arrive or are misrepresented.

Ahh...ok.
I was in the Paypal website (not Ebay as you have linked to ).
Thanks
It's at Paypal too (that's where I first saw it)..do you need that link as well? I didn't give that link, because you have to sign in first to get it.

I totally do not understand any of this.

I have never sold anything on Ebay....seems so complicated to me, and I am pretty smart. LOL!

I do not buy items on Ebay very often....usually hard to find things for my kids. I pay via paypal, having a credit card linked to Paypal because I will not post my banking acct info to them.

So is this going to affect me?

Thanks in advance.

As a buyer, I prefer to use my credit card. One time I never received the item I paid for, and the seller closed their e-bay and e-mail accounts after I paid. It would be a big hassle to get that money back if I used my bank account, wouldn't it?

I'd imagine that a few more people will only accept money orders rather than Paypal, so if you make sure the auction you are bidding on accepts Paypal, you should be fine.

"Use of PayPal on eBay
Notice Date: July 14, 2005
Effective Date: August 19, 2005
Beginning August 19, 2005, if you sell on eBay and offer PayPal, your PayPal account must accept all forms of payment including payments made via credit card, regardless of whether you display the PayPal logo with credit card icons. You must have a Premier or Business PayPal Account or be willing to upgrade from a Personal PayPal Account to a Premier or Business Account if you receive a credit card payment. You may not communicate to eBay buyers (e.g. via your eBay item description) that you only accept, or will not accept, specific forms of PayPal payment."
Thanks for posting this. I haven't sold on eBay for a couple of years, but I have tons of Harry Potter clothing and toys that I bought specifically to sell on eBay. Was planning to get started on that in about two weeks. I had already pretty much decided to upgrade to a premier account, since a lot of people won't buy unless they can use a credit card, and since personal PayPal accounts are limited to receiving $500 in payments per month. I guess this new policy will push me to go ahead and change my PayPal account now. I guess I got my fair share of "free" PayPal service a couple of years ago - and even then it was often a pain. My auctions included a full explanation about only accepting PayPal payments from existing funds or direct transfer, but some people still paid with credit cards, and then I had to deny the payments, and work out other arrangements with them. It makes the potential profit margin much smaller, but it still affords a way to do business without opening up a store front - and I am able to do it on my timetable.

I won't wvwn bid on an item that I can't pay with Paypal. I think it's actually going to hurt the business of those who won't take it.

Anne

I agree ::yes:: Why should I pay almost $1 more between money order cost and the stamp cost to pay for something?!?! I've only sent money orders in 3 out of over 300 transactions.

I might be willing to pay by money order...IF it was something I really wanted and IF the seller had excellent feedback over a good amount of time. However, I mainly only bid on auctions that accept PayPal. As a buyer it's MUCH easier and more convenient for me to pay...I get some protection and I can use my rewards credit card for a little money back.

As a seller I've always accepted credit cards through PayPal. Again, easier and more convenient for me, and I usually get paid quickly. However, as a seller of smaller items (DD's clothing and such) I really don't sell much anymore. With all of the fees I just don't find it's worth my while to bother. I can have a yard sale and everything is over and done with in a day. I still think ebay is kind of fun though.

I've only sold furniture, so having folks pay cash hasn't been a big problem. :)

I'm a very small time seller. Most everything I sell ends up at around $10 or less. And I've probably sold less than 20 items since I started selling. When I got my first credit card payment I was forced to switch to a business account to accept it.
I have no problem paying fees for a credit card transaction but with a business account they charge a fee for every paying transaction. I didn't care for that so I set up another personal account and tell people to contact me at the end of the auction if they are using paypal.
I do accept credit card payment in one account so Paypal is still getting their fees for that. Are they going to tell me I can't ask buyers to contact me before paying? I don't tell buyers they can't use a credit card, in fact I say I accept credit cards thru paypal. But I don't check the paypal symbol as payment accepted, I just say Paypal is accepted in my description.
Guess I'll find out if my auctions get closed. Then I will have to decide if it is worth selling something for the pitiful small profit I make. :sad2:

Do they just close your auctions? Or do they restrict your eBay account from selling?

I guess there goes my ebay career. I don't want to pay Paypal fees on top of ebay fees. Also there is risk of grtting charges reversed by buyers when they use a credit card. I consider myself an honest seller and I don't want to worry about dishonest buyers. I'l just accept money orders or billpay.

You know Bidpay is an excellent alternative to money orders. Basically you are buying a money order through Western Union and having them send it for you. The nice thing about Bidpay is the person buying the money order can use their credit card for it. You may want to consider accepting that as an alternative to PayPal.

It says on the site:
Additionally, sellers may not communicate to eBay buyers (for example, in their item description) that they only accept, or will not accept, specific forms of PayPal payment. Doing so in a listing can lead to it being cancelled, and refusal to accept a payment after the auction has ended will constitute seller non-performance.

I don't sell many items either and don't accept Paypal CC payments due to ALL the fees. It takes me about 45 minutes to list a single item due to my slow computer, so paying extra fees on top of ebay fees, most of the time isn't worth it.

Guess if I have to list something, I'll only be accepting Money Orders as well. Sorry for the inconvience to everyone but hope they will understand. If not, I'll be holding 1/2 yard sales a year...

You're not even supposed to do this now, let alone under the new rules. It's against eBay's TOS (or is it Paypal's TOS? Or does it matter since eBay owns Paypal now?) to try to avoid fees in this manner.

Ive always taken cc payments through paypal, are they changing paypal accts? Im verified...do I have to change anything? Personally, I find it nickel & diming to those sellers who dont take cc's, I wont bid on it just for that reason, as a buyer & seller, I know how much it costs to take a cc payment, & its minimal, actually prob a wash if you have good f/b your item will sell for more than those just accepting mo.. so why make a big stink about it? Just 1 opinion!
