I am giving my hairdresser a gift (valued abt the same as the cut), do I give my usual cash tip as well?

Yes. The gift is a gift. The tip is for services rendered on the 24th. Separate things.

Me too. A bonus is a bonus, not a replacement.
If you don't want to give the same amount, then I suggest giving the tip over giving a present. At this time of year, people who work for tips actually need the money more than gifts. As well intentioned as they are, you can't pay bills with gifts.

I am confused about this whole "give your hairdresser a gift thing". Giving gifts is a lovely idea but it almost seems like it is a "requirement" these days. Don't get me wrong, I love my stylist, we have a great time but the way I look at it, I go to her, pay her to do my hair, in essence paying her paycheck AND I am supposed to give her a gift??? Seems kind of backwards in my book--especially considering she is making about $50/hour after you take out expenses. She works 2 days/week and clears about $50,000/year.

I'm going to get my hair highlighted on the 19th. I don't plan on giving him a gift, but a extra good tip. I think that will be more appreciated than anything else.

I've never even thought about a gift for my hairdresser? :scared1: On top of what she charges me for haircut, I usually tip 20% which comes out to $8/$10 each time depending on if I get my brows down, or when I get my highlites. So that's about another $120/year since I go every 4/5 weeks (sucks to have a short pixie do ;)). AND, she cuts my DD's hair too and I tip them as well????

Absolutely, and I usually give a bigger one. I am off the hook this year - I divorced my old salon in September($230 for cut and highlights, but it was an upscale place), and I've only had 2 cuts and colors from the new place ($165!). I'll give next year.

I think it depends on your relationship with your stylist. I go to one of the top stylists in NYC. She does major celebrities, although the only name she ever dropped was doing hunky Gerard Butler. She's very discreet, but, we were actually talking about something else when his name came up.

She fits me in for last minute appointments when she could have gone home. Has never treated me less important than her other clients. Squeezes me in for "free" bangs trimmings (which I always tip her well,) and I tip her 20% for all these services.

For me, giving her a gift is a thanks for all the other stuff she does for me, beyond a cut.

.

One of the reasons I left my salon was because I brought dd6 in for a bang trim (she used to get her hair cut there as well), and I was charged $15.

The gift would be the money above the usual amount you pay....so yes you give the usual amount for the tip....

I totally agree with you. I just got a hair cut a couple of days ago, and gave her the same tip I always give her ($27 hair cut and a $5 tip...so I guess that's around 19%).

Maybe I'm a scrooge, but I pretty much reserve gift-giving for my immediate family members, and I chip in on a joint gift for my boss. When my son was in elementary school I did a small gift for his teacher, and sometimes for his bus driver.

 That's crazy. I do free bang trims also. I cannot imagine charging 15.00 for a bang trim.

I would guess that 80% of my clientele give gifts/money. A lot of people are just cutting back and I'm fine with that because I've done the same. There for awhile I felt like I had to give a Christmas gift to some stranger who held a door open for me! lol

The salon I go to gives customers a free hair product during the holidays.

I don't buy a gift but I do increase my tip if I happen to have an appointment.

I thought so too, especially since I've been going there almost 10 years, my 3 dd's go there, plus my mom. We've all switched - the prices were high, but the bang thing was the nail in the coffin. I like my cut/color just as much at our new place, in a healthclub - it's not as fancy, but the chairs are close enough together that everyone joins in on the conversation - at my last place, you'd have 4 chairs in a HUGE room, so you'd have to yell!

 That's nuts. I hope you didn't tip after being charged that

::yes::

My stylist even apologises for only having a few minutes to sqeeze me in, in between appointments. (Even though it literally only takes her two minutes to snip my bangs - three if she has to hunt for a water bottle.) One time, I asked her if she could re-shape one side a little as it was flipping out oddly. Snip, snip! Done. :cool1: Another time, she snipped both sides, practically recutting the whole top & sides, to get the sides to blend in with my bangs. :cutie:

Yes, she gets tipped well, and deserves it for a "free" bangs trimming. :rolleyes1 :thumbsup2

But to charge that much for something that takes two minutes, when you are a regular customer, no way.
