We have never made a family road trip but plan on either going to Disneys Hilton Head or Disneys Vero Beach in March. It is about 4-5 hours further to Vero Beach. It is about 15 to Hilton Head and 19 to Vero.

Tough call. If you were making the trip a month later, I'd go with Hilton Head. I've been to HHI several times in April. It's beautiful with the blooming flowers. And it's warm enough to go swimming. You're close to outlet mall shopping. And Savannah is a cool, historic day trip.

I still think you have the flowers in March, but HHI is not as warm. I still like HHI. You should definately visit it at least once.

You'll be joined on the road by flyerfan and fwd facing tentacles who are also driving this weekend. :drive:

We are looking forward to traffic reports, road construction updates and "Vote For Pedro" sightings!

All the best to all!

Have a great trip! :)

Have a safe trip!

have a safe trip eveyone!!! say hi to the virginia state troopers for me!!!:lmao:

Thanks everyone!

I am writing this from the outskirts of Savanna, GA this morning. My sister & I made it all the way here last night. Today will be a comparatively short hop to St Augustine. :goodvibes

Our timeline yesterday was leave NH at 4:30 AM, leave my sister's house in NE Connecticut about 6:30 AM. Maryland border jsut before noon. Arrive at hotel about 11:20 PM. We basically took the I-95 route except that we used the Merritt Parkway in CT and the Tapan Zee bridge in NY.

The traffic was suprisingly good. We had some back up/slow down on the Merrit and some slow down in VA. Otherwise, DC was surprisingly easy.

Yes, we visited Pedro and will probably stop there on the way back.

The only construction that we encountered was all the road work in Maryland plus there were 2 sections of night time work on I-95 in SC. None of this construction really slowed us down too much except maybe to drive 45 or so through the work zones.

Donald is #1, are you located in Southern NH? I am assuming yes, we are in the white mtns and it takes us about 3 hours to get to connecticut..

Hi all ;)

Don't recall if i posted or asked this question before.. Age is catching up with me, hehe.. :scared1:

Anyways.. We are driving from Long Island, NY to WDW in December..

We are planning on stopping in Savannah to go to Paula Deen's restaurant, anyone recommend any hotels in Savannah for 1 night? I'm sure I can just pick one, but want to make sure it's okay as we're driving far..

We were also thinking of going to Charleston, for the Holiday Lights show -- but thats way off I95, would you do it?

comments and suggestions appreciated! :)

Enjoy the weekend

We love Charleston! :thumbsup2 Any time of year is great in that city, but we have never been at Christmas time. It's really not that far off I-95. The market is wonderful and the horse and buggy tours around the old section are wonderful.

Savannah is also a great stop for us when we go to Florida. I believe it would be difficult to get a spot eating at Paula Dean's if you only plan a one night stop. The line forms very early in the morning, and although the food is good, there are other restaurants there that are as good or even better. My friend was there for 3 nights in April and counldn't get a ressie for lunch or dinner. :cool2:

An update from I95 in southern Georgia. There is a lot of construction but very little traffIc so it doesn't matter. The whole trip down so far has been problem free. We spent the night in Orangeburg SC at a nice Holiday Inn Express. As I type this we have slowed down to crawl. I guess I spoke too soon. Will keep everyone posted.

Thanks for the update...

I will look more into Charleston and maybe just stay there for the night instead of Savannah, problem is, we need to make sure we dont miss our WDW reservation.. ;)

A good hotel in the Savannah area, 15 minutes from the old town and right off I-95, is the Port Wentworth Days Inn--it's the best Days Inn we've ever stayed at. We hope to get to Charleston on a trip when we're not too rushed but have done Savannah twice since it's so much closer to I-95 and also closer to WDW.

We tell anyone who's going to Savannah to try our favorite restaurant, Mrs. Wilkes, if you can fit it into your schedule since they only serve lunch:

As you'll see Mrs Wilkes has much much better reviews than Paula Deen's Lady & Sons!

Happy to report we are moving again. The problem was an accident in the construction zone and we went down to one lane for a mile or so. We are at Exit 29 in Georgia and we have passed the construction.

Thanks!!! will look that up right now... I'm hoping when we do drive that we'll make it in one day to Savannah - Maybe like you said, we'll save Charleston for another time when we can enjoy the whole area and nicer weather...

I am also looking up the restaurant as well ;)
thx for the tips!

Yes I am in Merrimack. My sister lives in the upper NE corner of CT just a few minutes off I-395. So it takes me about 90 minutes to get there.

Well, the drive from Savannah to St. Augustine was very easy. Yes as Fwd Facing Tentacles mentioned, the construction in GA didn't cause us any issues. We made it to the FL Welcome Center some time between 8:30 and 9, so we didn't encounter the accident that Fwd Facing Tentacles mentioned.

We were in St Augustine by about 10 and have spent the day enjoying the town and sightseeing.

For those of you that drive from the Dallas - Fort Worth area - Which route do you take?

I have found different routes depending on if I use google maps, mapquest, AAA maps. So, which route is the best? :confused3

We (3 adults and 1 age 6) plan on driving next June.

Debbie

We live in Plano and have driven to WDW and Panama City Beach several times.

I 20 to Shreveport
I 49 to Lafayette
I 10 to I 75
I 75 to Florida Turnpike

I have driven it in a little over 18 hours streight.

We leave 6 weeks from today.

Three experienced 2,000+ mile round-trip drivers (Fwd Facing Tentacles, Flyerfan and Donald is #1) have completed half their journeys and have arrived at WDW!
Congratulations! :cool1:

After such a long drive, they are entitled to let others drive them around on such vehicles as monorails, assorted cars & boats, and other various magical means of transportation. So sit back and enjoy! You can now take your eyes off the road ahead!

All the best.

Sorry it's taken a while to post. Took 81-77-26-95. We decided to make it a 2-nighter on the way down so we left Friday at 5:45 and drove a few hours to Winchester, VA. It should have taken us less than 3 hrs but due to night time construction near WV & VA border, it took us 15 minutes to go one mile. After leaving VA at 6:45 it was smooth sailing to the Fairfield off 95 in Savannah, GA. Left this morning around 7:15 and got here before 12. The only construction was in Georgia for about 30 miles, but it was inactive I guess because it was Sunday. What is it with that construction? Do they milk it that much? Anyway, ran into rain in Jacksonville and so far today it seemed like we got a downpour every 1/2 hr to hour. Not used to this as we usually come down here in November or January. Happy to have made a safe journey.

A "safe journey," indeed!
Whether folks drive or fly to WDW, a safe journey is the first important element to a magical vacation.
Enjoy the rest of your stay, along with FWD Facing Tentacles and Donald is #1, the other 2,000+ mile round-trip drivers who are there right now.

Hi Everyone,

I haven’t been here in a few weeks, but I wanted to give you all an update on our trip.

We left Saturday morning August 15 at 7:00 AM. Everything went really well, until we hit Virginia around 10:30 AM. As many of you know, 95 in Virginia can be really BUSY! Our XM traffic told us the backup was about 3 exits in northern Virginia, so we figured we would stay on there and put up with it. Well, within an hour, the traffic backup stretched to Richmond. We couldn’t believe it – we really weren’t prepared for that. We stopped at – wait for it – CRACKER BARREL and had lunch, then got back on the road. The GPS detour tried to take us back north. I don’t know what I did when I asked for the detour, but that lost us a good 40 minutes. Then we finally got onto Route 1. Well, so did many of us and the wait at each light was around 15 minutes. Needless to say, we didn’t get out of Virginia until close to 5 pm. We were in driving hell!

All rest stops were lovely – every place we stopped had attendants cleaning up. I can honestly say the rest stop bathrooms were MUCH better than the Disney bathrooms, which on this trip were in HORRENDOUS condition most times.

But, we pressed on and forced our way to Walterboro SC. Checked in to the Quality Inn and Suites, behind the Waffle House around 10:00 pm, so it took us an extra 5 hours.

That brings us to the second ring of hell – the hotel. This was an outside corridor but the doors opened to an inner courtyard with a pool. Along with the broken ice machine that soaked the rug in the hallway from the parking lot, there were HUGE moth, spiders and webs everywhere. Like no one ever cleans outside.

The room was actually a nice idea – two separate rooms, one living room and one bedroom with two bathrooms. The remote for the TV was missing, the fridge and all the lights were unplugged (I was so scared to reach behind furniture in the dark!!!) and there were unknown dark smears on the walls in the bathroom, on the doorways and randomly throughout the rooms. I wouldn’t let anyone change their clothes or take their socks off. We decided sheets would be better than sleeping on top of the beds, kind of slept, then got out of there real quick. I wouldn’t wish that hotel on my worst enemy. Breakfast was not very good either. The scrambled eggs ran out around 7:45 and were never refilled. I felt bad for all the people who came to breakfast after us.

The rest of the drive was quick and uneventful. Thankfully the kids were happy to be doing to Disney World so there wasn’t too much whining, and the DVD player really came in handy.

We arrived at Fort Wilderness at 2:00 on Sunday and left to come home on Friday 8/29.

The drive home was almost perfect. We stopped in Lumberton at the Comfort Suites overnight, and the room was lovely. Breakfast – not so great. Yeah, technically hot, but it was hard-boiled eggs in a steam tray and little sausages in burger buns. Very stern attendant who yelled at my daughter when she dropped a plastic fork and didn’t pick it up quickly enough.

Traffic was great, except we hit Washington around 3:00 on Saturday. Usually a good time, except the motorcade for Ted Kennedy’s funeral was hitting town at that time. We had to detour a little, going through town, which added about 45 minutes, but it was okay. I showed the kids the mall, Washington monument, Smithsonian Institute and Capital Building out the window.

We got home on Saturday around 6 – tired but not miserable. Total miles 2,400 EXACTLY (including all the driving around town in Florida). We had no problem with the drive and will do it again in February. :thumbsup2

We always seem to stop at CB's for lunch or dinner. I guess it's a safe bet.

If you want a cleaner place to stay in Walterboro, I suggest the Microtel. We've stayed there twice. It's very basic but clean.
