Thanks for the info. Just curious - why did you think you'd need to be out of DC by 6 am on Saturday? I thought the main traffic problems were Monday-Friday there. We plan to hit DC around 7:30 - 8 AM on Saturday and figured it would be fine (unless we go down 81). Please share ?!!?!

Thanks,

From experience and from other folks here, the DC area always has traffic! even on Saturdays.

Well we made it to Orlando by about 730PM. Day two wasn't too bad, except for a lot of rain in Georgia and parts of Florida. A few construction spots in Southern GA on 75 and again on the turnpike. Lots of traffic on the turnpike for some reason. Almost saw a horrible accident but luckily the driver prevented it. A beat up old box truck was hauling some carnival trailer looked like a food kiosk. The trailer started swaying back and forth slowly at first so I passed it, and then the trailer started swaying more and more to the point where it almost flipped over! The driver slowed down and a semi almost rear ended it. It was scary there for a moment. But he got it over to the side of the road.

Safe journeys to those coming down soon!

What a fantastic thread- you guys are a wealth of knowledge! Thanks to the OP for starting this thread- it's helpful to get tips from those who are so experienced at the longer drives!

Howdy!
Question: what does the abbreviation OP stand for?
Thanks.
All the best.

i thought it means original poster to the thread.

We thought it might mean "outstanding people." ;)

Nevertheless, we are the "original poster" people...posting the initial message back on a cold December 6, 2007 night.

Actually, the "outstanding people" are all those who have contributed to this informative thread.

All the best.

Anticipation after crossing the FL border after a 1,000+ mile drive to WDW:

* turning off I-95 at Exit 260-B for I-4 West!
* seeing the tall buildings of Orlando in the distance
* seeing the first Disney billboard sign after passing Orlando

and the ultimate: Exit #67!

We will be making the journey again in 2010. Plans are about the same. Leave on a Thursday around 3 pm. Stop around 9-10 pm in NC area. Get up around 8 am and get to Orlando about 4-5 pm. Hang out with DH's family Friday evening and stay at their house that night. Then the next morning get up bright and early and check into our hotel and go straight to the MK! :cool1:

There are advantages and disadvantages to both flying and driving; however, if you drive...

Leave when you want.

Take whatever you want with you.

Bathroom breaks in areas bigger than an apartment pantry.

No turbulence.

You don't have to take off your shoes.

You don't have to lock your luggage.

Only you can lose your luggage.

Although it fits in your trunk it may not fit in the overhead bin.

You can stick your head out of the window.

No connecting flights.

Snacks are unlimited and come in large sizes.

Beverages from your cooler.

You decide who travels with you.

If you sit in the back of the car, you can de-car in about 5 seconds; if you sit in the back of the plane it might take 15 minutes to de-plane.

You can stop whenever you want to.

A flock of birds can't shut down your engine (but they can mess up your windshield).

You can drive your vehicle into the MK parking lot.

You have "freedom."

All the best!

For those that take 81-77-26-95 route from the northeast.....does anyone have a way to avoid going straight through Charlotte?

Does anyone know the I-95 Florida welcome center hours? I am hoping they are open for free oj when we pass through:)

Roundtrip for us is 3350 miles. We enjoy going more than coming back for obvious reasons. We try to included interesting stop along the way.

The I-95 Florida Welcome Center is open every day from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. (except major holidays when it is closed).

The Florida Welcome Center's phone is (904) 225-9182.

All the best.

Thanks for the hours...it is a great stop if you've never done so. They offer free oj or grapefruit juice:)

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2
I second that!!

We are moving our trip up a week and will be leaving May 6th. Our most recent plan of attack is to leave @11-12 when the kids are done with their NJASK test and stop overnight in Florence,SC. After looking at some hotels there is nothing available due to some big Nascar race that weekend.

Does anyone know a good place to stop after Florence. Would it be a good idea to push it to Santee?
