Thanks!

Yeah, Fess Parker was THE star of the opening ceremonies at Disneyland. He was filming the Davy Crockett keel boat episodes at the time. And this December marks the 60th anniversary of "Davy Crockett, Indian Fighter," the first of the original three episodes. And 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the Fess Parker Winery!

I just wonder how life would have been around here if he was able to get his Kentucky amusement park built. It was supposed to be another Disneyland.

I live about 15 minutes from the proposed park. Which was never built.

ETA...Looks like it was due to Kings Island being built about an hour north of his park. Still, too bad. Living down here, I would have spent a lot more time at Frontier Land. But maybe it's for the best. Growing up, I lived just north of Cincinnati and I worked for three summers at Kings Island.

The lack of investors was the primary reason for Frontier Worlds not being built. Fess followed up with a Santa Clara, CA project idea which almost happened except for a botched negotiation. It's all detailed in Fess Parker: TV's Frontier Hero, the authorized bio of the Disney Legend.

I "know" the author. ;)

All the best. :thumbsup2

Winking at you back. :worship:

I really should get the book.

Ahem....Changing the subject...from two pages back...

I am trying to figure out a good stopping point again - I have to drive at night so we are leaving at 6p or so and heading out. I want to do a hotel room mid-point but I am getting tripped up on the check in-out policies of the hotels.

I estimate I can stop around Walterboro SC around 6a but I just called there and they said I have to check out by 11a or get charged for 2 nights. I don't want to do that.

What do you guys do when your layover is in the early AM? Do you just bite the bullet and pay it OR is there another option?

I am taking my GMa with me and she is a young 87 year old - I think she is going to need a break from the car.

I think the changeover from one day to another for lodging is around 6 AM. I know at Disney, if you check in at 6 AM on the 18th, you're paying for lodging through the morning of the 19th. The problem is...are there rooms available?

Assuming you want to check out about 2 PM (allowing housekeeping enough time to clean your room before normal check-in time), you might be able to pay for only one night. It's a YMMV situation. I do know around airport areas, you can pay for a room for a few hours during the day (for travellers with long layovers).

Ask around. Your request is unusual. But reasonable.

HOW WAS IT!!!!!!

heres a song for you guys!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pflp9MdhXSM

I have to laugh everytime I here this music. my mom is Italian. that's right, swing first ask questions later.:lmao: she would listen to this stuff over and over.(all in Italian,no English) when she got mad, she would start talking in Italian and of course us kids had no idea what she was saying. :lmao: she was barely five foot on a good day and the only time she took that apron off was to go to church. :lmao:
my mom was the youngest of 11. I never seen 11 people eat, dance and sing as much as these 11. they came here with nothing. they lived in a camp after the war till my grandfather could get them here. not a pot to pee in but the happiest people you ever want to meet.
dw never met my mom, I use to take dw to family reunions at my aunts house when they were all still alive. the first time dw went, I told her you have to eat something, my aunt will unload the frig, till you do. :lmao:
when we got in the car to come home, dw looked at me with her eyes wide open and said, "oh my god, why do they yell at each other".( my dw being from a non Italian home, had no idea :lmao:) there not yelling at each other, that's the way they talk!!! 11 kids, how do you think anyone hears you!!!! :lmao: I miss my mom, I know she is standing behind a stove smilling somewhere!

I just bought cream soda for my DS last week LOL!! I'll have to try Publix brand.
VN is one our favorites. My kids don't eat anywhere else like they eat there. They LOVE the pizza ( well we all do). We always get the arancini app. Then the piccante mezza metro pizza ( and yes we eat that whole pizza!! ) YUM!!!
Usually my boys will get the cookie gelato sandwich right outside on the promenade but they were too full....shocking!!

Loved the Italian music! My dad is portuguese and used to yell at us and swear in portuguese when he got mad. And yes my aunts seem to yell when they talk too. :rotfl: all similar....those Romance languages.

We went to the beach today. It was so hot today that it wasn't much of a relief at the beach. It's so funny that back home when it hits 90 everybody flocks to the beach bc it feels at least 10 degrees cooler. Not here though. :(

never had the pizza yet. it always looks good. dd ate there a lot and got there pizza often. she spent a lot of time in epcot eating for some reason. :lmao: she worked in the mk and didn't spend a lot of time there on her time off. i would get her 7 page bank statements. :scared: :lmao:
i couldn't afford another college program. :lmao: she went snorkeling and the beach a lot and also had an ap at, can i say it, universal studios.
i told her it was a once in a life time op so go have fun.... i didn't think she would take me up on it! :lmao:
after she got home and made a scrap book, im looking at all these pictures at the beach, universal, riding the little speed boats in front of the grand Floridian you name it. :lmao:
she has a picture of her riding a bike down main street usa. :lmao: i asked her what was this? she said one night during training at 2:30am, her friend and herself ask the manager if they could take the bike for a ride up main street? after begging him for a half hour, he let them do it. :lmao:

Sorry, I can't be much help with pointing out rest areas. We've only made one drive so far (with drive #2 set to commence in 36 days!), and I quite honestly don't remember any of the rest stops, except for the Florida welcome center with their free OJ. Also, we left around 3:30 in the morning, stopped for gas at a well-lit gas station around 6:00 before entering Illinois, and didn't stop again until 8:30 or 9:00 when we had daylight and safety wasn't as much of a concern.

Just curious - what route are you taking? I57 through Illinois? I65 through Indiana/Kentucky? We took I65 down and I57 back, just for a change of scenery. We stopped in Morrow, GA heading down and in Nashville on the way home. This time we'll be driving east first, stopping in Columbia, SC for the night. Then we'll head to Orlando from there. It'll add about 30-60 minutes to our drive, but we'll get to see other parts of the country. Although, we have booked the same Drury Inn in Morrow, GA as our last trip, just in case the east coast is getting battered by a hurricane or other big storm at the time of our drive; I'd like to avoid that if possible. Both hotels have a 6:00 pm same day cancellation policy, so I'll just cancel whichever one we don't use. (This is all way more than you wanted/needed to know, I'm sure! Truth be told, I just like talking about trip planning!)

Thanks for the reply! I'm honestly not sure which route we are going to take...was hoping to get some info that might make up my mind :confused3 My husbands father is an over the road truck driver, and is often referred to as "the atlas" so he could very well tell us two days before to avoid a certain route for one reason or another! I'd like to have a bit firmer of a plan in place by then, but DH doesn't always agree with my extensive planning... I guess I just need to have a rough plan in place for both ways and see which one we get to use! :rotfl:

Hi Sarah!!! I'm not familiar with your neck of the woods. I can try to give you some advise. Allllllllllllways listen to the truck driver!!!! Before I leave, I start asking the over the road guys that come into work what is going on. I have known most of them for years and they are the best source of info you will find. They do it all day long. All different times and different ways. Even on the road, I pay attention to the trucks a lot. Don't worry to much about gas stations and rest stops. There are plenty and also take your pick in your dining pleaser. That is the best part about driving, a general idea and just let the rest happen. You can change your plan, your route, your timing, when you eat and even when you go to the restroom at a seconds notice. You may get held up for a few minutes in one spot and make it up along the way. It's a great way to travel. Just relax and have fun with the family.

What's the name of the fried chicken place that's advertised all along US95 in the south? More importantly, has anyone tried it? Are there any good places to stop for fried chicken along 95S that aren't too far off the highway? Something a step above Popeye's and the like. Maybe a real restaurant that also has good BBQ. On our way down we hope to get as far into SC as possible to stop for the night but can stop a little earlier for dinner, so probably somewhere in the Carolinas would be ideal.

Wow she has some great memories.... Expensive but great!! Lol
You need to try the pizza!

I think it's Zaxby's. We've never eaten there but there are lots of billboards for it.

How do you know that you desperately need a WDW drive?

Answer (what this driver just did on his laptop): traced the entire drive on Google Maps (a mid-point setting) while Walt Disney World Today music was playing in the background! Once the map got to FL, the setting was increased so each exit on I-95 was visible. :surfweb:

Is it August yet? :confused3

All the best. :thumbsup2

It will be here before you know it!!! The summer flies by so fast. :( We've been here for 3wks. And it feels like just yesterday that we arrived.

So, I'm finalizing me travel plans for our upcoming road trip to Disney World. i'm planning over two days each way. We'll be departing SE MA around 2:30 am on the 6th, stopping in Walterboro, Sc, then arriving at ASSp on the 7th.

My question is: when do you typically leave DisneyWorld to head home? We are scheduled to head home on 8/15. I was thinking of spending the morning in one of the parks and leaving WDW around 2ish. Would stopping near the SC/NC boarder be a feasible goal?

We live about 20-21 hours away..we left around 2pm or so, and arrived home about noon. It wouldve been sooner...except the gps took me through the Chicago loop...

This time I'll plan on leaving disney much sooner...only reason we didn't leave until 2 last time qas because we stopped in Clearwater to visit

Alright, we're coming up on 60 days til our trip!!! :cool1:
We're driving for the first time and need your best advice. Anyone from or pass through western PA (we're in pittsburgh) that can tell us your preferred route? I'm excited to add our driving to the trip planning, but feel lost about where to even start! and just to add- we plan on leaving around dinner and driving straight through on the way down, and then going halfway and stopping at a hotel for the drive home. thank you!!!

I want this info too! I'm coming from Buffalo and the route googlemaps has is going through PIT. I am just so unsure of the route I should be taking from PIT.
