if you think you will hit less traffic going 15/270/495/95 I would go that way.
in September, im going 81/66/17/95..... we will be leaving at 12:30am and ill be on the other side of Richmond by 5:30am. im going that way to avoid i26 construction at rush hour. there is construction on i95 north of Richmond but ill hit it in the wee hours in the morning.

Oooh...forgot to check into construction and possible lane closures. The 81/66/17/95 is a good route as well. Sounds like I should do a bit more homework.

If I was going to leave a few hours later, I would take 81/77/26. I'm just going to hit that construction smack dab in the middle of rush hour.
To be honest , I never hit a lot of traffic on 81/77/26. I stay away from the cities at rush hours and 81 north in the upper mm to home can always get some traffic. There is no perfect way to go. You can sit in traffic either way but over the years I just found avoiding three major cities just lessens my chances of sitting. Being we live so close to i78, we don't have to. Heck the most traffic I hit is on rt22 trying to get to i78 lol.

I am about an hour and ten minutes form the DE Memorial Bridge. I am up early weekdays regularly, so for me getting up a few hours earlier and leaving 2:30 AM works best for me. Everyone else sleeps in the vehicle till we are in NC or SC! We are in the WDW area by 5:30 to 7:30 pm depending on stops, weather, traffic etc. I would never be a good overnight driver as I would be too tired. So part of it is knowing your driving and tiredness factors and figuring out what will work best for you. Coming home we used to stop more, but that second day was a killer for me. It just seemed to take forever even though it was less hours. So lately I just leave WDW around 8 AM and am home around midnight.

I would estimate $15 to $20. Basically it will be a NY bridge toll, NJ Turnpike, DE Memorial Bridge, $4 when you leave DE and $4 at a Baltimore Tunnel. Once you are past the tunnel, no more tolls (unless you take 417 instead of I-4.

For us, we usually depart sometime between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. I've done two straight through drives to home of late, arriving most recently at the Jersey Shore in April at 2:23 a.m.

we look at it this way. we are back in the room by 6pm the night before we leave. we get our seven,eight hours sleep in and showers. if anything, we cheat our self out of some park time the last day but with the aps it kind of works its self out. leaving at 3:30am which is normal life for me, in stead of hanging out a few more hours just to leave and sit in hours of traffic is worth it to us.

In order to maximize time in the parks according to the number of nights on property, in the past we checked out in the morning, spent all day at the parks, and then left that evening and drove a short distance to a motel outside Disney. Depending on how we felt, we might stop immediately and go to bed early not far from Disney, or we might drive a few hours. The basic idea is to do the last night of our vacation at Disney, not at Disney. We don't do this as much now that we stay longer and can buy any length ticket we want.

Whereas there was very little on the 81/77/26 route. I might end up hitting Charlotte at the tail end of their rush hour (I hope) if I leave here at 10am. But that may be the way to go. Hope my luck taking that route gets better!

A lot of it is just luck. I sat a few times over the years and they all seem to be the upper mm of 81 into Virginia and home. There was a huge construction project on 81 in wv the bridge in Harrisburg on 81 has been under construction since William penn. Here's how I try to handle the northeast. I get past i66 on 81 before the morning rush. Or I get last Richmond before the morning rush. I also avoid Charlotte nc. At rush hours.
Don't drive yourself nuts over it, anyway you go anymore is ripped up. Lol

I think 81/77/26 is your best bet. Even near rush hour Charlotte is better than spots on 95. Any more, I plan on slowed traffic at least once on the trip, anyway.

Oh, and I agree with Dvczerfs. Don't worry to much and plan to be flexible.

BC, it's cool that you can do it that way -- I become useless after 11 pm on the way home, so can't do it! I also choose to think of it this way: If I'm out of the room by 5 a.m., the villa can be prepped that much sooner for the next guest. (I call housekeeping the afternoon before and tell them I'm going to be out by 5 a.m.. Have NO idea if this actually helps or not...)
