hello everyone!!!!! got home this afternoon. just got done unloading, putting away and throwing in the laundry. :lmao: (before the women have a fit, the laundry is my job around the house. yes, i fabric soften, don't mix whites and colors, hang and fold :lmao: ) (dishwasher is my job too :lmao:)
good trip. a lot of driving for a few days but I had to get a few things done before the summer kicked in.
traffic wasn't bad. I now remember why I leave wdw around 2am and not wait till the afternoon.
Im on my way to change my signature. add a trip and a day.
now to get ready for September trip. cant wait!!!!
have a good evening!!!! :thumbsup2
Wercome back! So we booked a last minute trip but can not leave til 4:00 Friday 5/23 as we are booked from 5/24-5/31(snagged a Windsor Hills townhome for $466).
I have no idea where to stop to stay over night as we normally never leave that late. :confused3
we will only drive til about 10 p.m. as dh and I will have been up early as we both are working the day we leave. Then sat. will just be killer long drive!:sad2:
Any idea whereabouts that would land us? I'm assuming on 81-77 somewhere.

Just found out that dh can get off 5/23 and one of the 3 kiddos I babysit will be away, the other 2 will have the grandmom watch them so we can leave early a.m Fri, instead of 4 p.m. Fri!

thanks!!! and im glad I could help.:lmao: if you can get out of town by 4am on Friday morning, that will get you into Virginia before rush hour gets going. if you drive straight thru leaving at 4am, you would pull into wdw around 8pm.

Hi all! We are driving to Disney in June with our 3 children. We are driving straight through from San Antonio Texas (about 1200 miles each way). We are picking the kids up from their last day on school at 3pm on Thursday and Plan to be on the road by 330 pm. We hope to arrive late morning/early afternoon on Friday! We prefer driving over flying for long distance trips so this is definitely not our first rodeo ( Cali to Texas, Cali to Pennsylvania round-trip to name a few). However this will be our first time driving to Disney from San Antonio and the first time on I 10 for lots of miles. Anyone have any insight for our driving path?? Thanks!!

We have driven twice to San Antonio, but have only used I-10 for part of our drive. Nevertheless, avoid greater Houston at rush hour. And be prepared for sun when heading due east in the morning.

All the best. :thumbsup2

Does anyone have a ballpark estimate on how much tolls are in total when driving from CT via 95?

I would guess $40 to $50 each way. The NY bridges are expensive and the NJ turnpike/Delaware Memorial Bridge will set you back too. After you get into DE, there is a $4 toll at the DE/MD line and the Baltimore Tunnels. Coming north, there is also an $8 toll in MD around the Susquehanna River.

We made it!!! Great timing!! We left NJ at 6:45 and arrived at CBR at 10:35am! We only stopped for gas, bathroom & a quick stop at BK. No traffic, just some rain!!

I have a question for all you long-distance drivers. How many hours do you put in in a single day without burning out?

I am driving down in August, me and my 2 kids (10 and 8) from NY. I made this trip (just us) once before, but left around 12:45pm. Only made it until 11pm before I needed to stop.

This trip I plan to leave around 3am, and I hope to make it until 8pm with a 30 minute lunch stop and roughly an hour for dinner, plus potty and gas stops. Do you think this is a crazy goal? I'm not going to push myself, if I'm tired, I'll stop. Better to arrive later than not at all!

I can't do more than 18-hours (driving, stopping for gas and bathroom breaks, etc.) or I become zombie-like with what I call "astronaut legs." But that's enough time to get from the Jersey Shore to Lake Buena Vista.

Driving long distances depends on the individual and such factors as weather, road conditions, traffic problems, road construction, etc. Unless you are an experienced long distance driver, the previous day's/night's rest is one, if not the, most important factor in how long you will go without getting too tired. Remember: being asleep at the wheel has the same result as DWI. Play it safe: rest whenever necessary and book a place to stay if you find you are starting to get tired. Or you can nap at one of the I-95 rest stops. Stay alert: Family cargo is precious and cannot be replaced.

All the best. :thumbsup2

This is a very important question for those who haven't done it before, but you have. Being safe is important, but sounds like you used good judgment in the past. I'd say about 18 hours is max. I don't do it in one day very often anymore, it just makes me too worn out when I get there. 3am is good, it gives you lots of day time and still get in early.

You should be able to do it oK, just make sure you get enough rest for beforehand. Have someone talk and keep you alert. If you get tired or groggy, STOP, and either rest or do something to get the blood flowing. Often a quick walk, exercises, or just moving around helps. The planned breaks are good. Plan for at least one 15 to 30 minute traffic issue. I always keep something spicy hot in the car. This always wakes me up instantly. It's usually crunchy hot Cheetos. :)

Find something fun to do during the drive. An audio book for the family, movies for the kids. We always make detailed Disney plans while we drive and listen to podcasts. It really passes the time and gets us ready for Disney.

Sounds like you have a good plan and will do fine. We are going down in November for the... I think 30th time. :) I live in PA and my wife's family is in Titusville. Oh well, I am forced to visit family. :)

I just did 151/2 straight through by myself. Lol.
I drive for a living so don't go by me. I'm not normal. Lol
You got some good advise from the previous posters
Be careful and stay safe.

I love this thread, it is comforting.

Can anyone offer tips for kids on the long drive, especially while trying to sleep? Ods complains his feet get tingly when hanging from the booster for a long time but he is too small to be with out booster. They slide and jerk around when trying to sleep, head bobs around. I cant sleep in the car so I feel their pain. I just dont want to wind up with them up all night as we drive. Any ideas to make it more comfortable?
