I am getting really excited now. Will be packing the van in about 48hrs. Leaving in less than 72hours and my kids have NO clue.

We surprised our kids with Disney trips twice - their reactions when they found out are some of my favorite memories. Make sure you get video of the 'unveil' and enjoy! :goodvibes

My kids know that we're leaving Thursday after dinner (57 hours, but who's counting?? ;) )... and they are so excited they're driving me a little crazy!

i flipped through your trip report.:thumbsup2 great job!! your going to be driving about 5 miles from me. i was reading about what you found on roadside, very cool.:thumbsup2 the tractor trailer on the bilboard and the paint can we pass all the time.:lmao: i think you are coming east via i78, where i78 merges with rt22, just past dorney park by a few miles, look to your right, you will see a house that is round. its next to the highway you cant miss it. once you past the allentown exits, theres a place called roadside america. some sat. if you have nothing to do and want to take your son there, its a huge train village indoors. i use to go there all the time when i was kid. also, you said your husband was into old haunted jails, theres a jail up in jim thorpe pa. (not to far from you) that has alot of history. the molly mcguires, if you ever seen or herd of them, its about the coal miners. anyway, this jail has a hand print on the wall that has a questionable history. its been on the history channel already. i can tell you how to get there if your husband looks into it and wants to check it out.:thumbsup2

:lmao:my Dh isn't looking at anything that I am planning...He said to plan it and give him a map and he'll drive where ever we want to:rotfl2:! So yeah I would like to add that on! I like stopping at things on the way down instead of just driving down- it's another thing that I love about driving I get to see and experience things on the way to and from my destination! The roadside america... I am wondering if that is the same thing my grandfather told me about. No I think that his was the Mercer Museum so I might add that stuff. I have to go through and re-do that part. I hear that some of them might be taken down or closed (like the root beer factory-one of the only things I was going to do for myself:rolleyes:). What about the east coast of NC? I can't really find too much there truthfully and my mom lives there (she knows nothing interesting we haven't already seen) so we have to stop over there, but I wanted to do something and not just sit in her house- for my 6 year old it would be like trying to keep him calm and good in a glass museum! And food places.... I was wondering what does everyone do for that? We will be driving for about a day and a half so I don't think that chicken salad will keep that long even with new ice in the cooler. I am talking about food to bring and food to buy.... someone told me to try to find out what each state is good for and just go for that (share a meal of it so that we don't get too full and can do it for each state). Sorry to make this so long, when I was a kid we did this, but we just always drove for a short time and ate 2 times for fast food and my son can't have fast food too much with his stomach so I have been trying to come up with a way around that!

I am doing the single digit dance. :yay: The van has had a thorough going over and needs rear brakes. I expected that. A few things need to be done soon but shouldn't impact the trip. I will get the new battery this weekend though. It isn't holding a full charge and better safe than sorry. I have a leaking boot but it's not severe and will just get done before the winter sets in.

My DH decided not to work the 2 days before we leave on wednesday so he will be well rested. I spoke with my brother who lives in Manassas and works near DC. Even leaving at 4 AM we will hit some traffic in that area but he thinks we should be OK, maybe a slight delay as traffic is lighter during the summer. We are packing food so we will have minimal stops. No girls so no stopping at EVERY bathroom. We are planning on driving straight to the Orlando area. Finally a decision from DH so now I have to try and find somewhere to stay the one night. I had hoped to take a leisurely ride home but evidently we are leaving to come home Aug 31st and I need to watch my grandkids the next day. I am hoping she can work something out as we will have to make more stops to eat on the way home.

Now to start my lists again. I need to stop losing them.

Us too. I pack up the rental car on Friday and we leave Friday night. DD thinks we are going to the shore far away (thank goodness my 5 year old doesn't pick up on all our dropped mistakes of Disney) so we are hoping she catches on when she starts seeing the Disney signs. If not...hopefully when we check in at Pop on Sunday that will be a BIG CLUE :)
We are stopping at Kingsland, GA again on the way down and the way back. Love that location!!
Have a great trip and like someone else said keep the video going when they find out!

PrincessMom4 has done one of the greatest surprises for her kids of all time! PM4 - can you still share the link to the video? It was a mission to destroy Emperor Zurg that she showed them on the DVD player in the car! Truly one of the coolest stories I heard and she shared the video with us at the time.

Ooh - have you eaten at Steffin's? It's a great local restaurant/diner. Homemade soup, fresh roasted turkey. It's really great.

A question for the experts please?

We have flown every trip (15 and counting) and this year for the first time, considering the cost of airfare, considered driving. We managed to get some barely decent airfare, so we won't drive this year.

I would really like to drive next year (possibly). Dd8 is now old enough to handle the trip (imo), she did 4 hours to Hershey from Rochester, NY, and did it really well.

I HATE the cost of airfare, and I LOVE to drive long distances.

Approximately how much does it cost to drive from either PA or NY, and can you guys give me some idea of your game plan as you go? Do you drive straight through? Do you go halfway and stop someplace overnight? I am wondering how much I would save if we drove instead of fly.

TIA for your expertise!

Normally, I leave the NY area (Long Island) before dawn... but tomorrow, I can't leave as early -- I probably won't be able to hit the road until after the morning rush.

Any tips on navigating the NE corridor when you can't beat the traffic by leaving super early?

I think you'd be OK with a mid-morning departure.

Where on LI are you? I would think if you are on the road by 10AM or so, you should avoid most of the area rush. The NJ Turnpike is not awful on a Wednesday late morning. You'd probably also get past DC by about 2PM or so?

Are you going straight through, or stopping?

Thanks. That's what I'm hoping for -- on the road by 10 and past DC before the evening rush begins, but I've never left mid-morning before.

I'm in Nassau, and I'll be heading to NC first, I have family near Lumberton, so it's a natural midpoint for the trip.

amount of gas is easy to fiqure. take what your car gets per mile. divide that into the total miles and that will tell you how much gas you will use. or close to it. i for some reason use 100 gallon from pa to florida and back. we have a town and country and i aver. about 23 mpg. (its not driven the speed limit to often on our trips) there are sites on the internet that will also give you an idea. which are ok but you can drive your car and i can drive your car and get two dif. mpg. i just came back in june and my total gas was $358.
we drive straight through. its all how you hold up on the road, how many drivers etc.... some people do two days from our area, some do three days. must of us have a cooler in the car with food and drinks and snack boxs. for us, i hit the road at 3am,(im up for work by 4am si its no biggie) and i hit the okw parking lot around 7:30- 8:00pm.

We will be going on our second trip to Disney this coming March. Checking the price for airfare for that time is ridiculous. Because of that we have decided to drive from Milwaukee, WI to Disney.

Has anyone from Wisconsin done this trip? How was it and where did you stop for the night?

im going 78-81-77-26-95-4. i stay away from the east coast and philly/ dc/balt/richmond. if its the dead of winter i go 78-81-66-17-95-4. the only city in the northern end is richmond. i just drove from home to the contemp. in 16 hours and my normal time is 16 1/2 going either way. google is great but there times are as long as theres no traffic etc.... i have an atlas and gps with me i havnt had the atlas out in about 10 years and i used the gps so i can see how fast im going easier and we used it to get around a wreck in june.

dvczerfs...just curious, why do you go the alternate route in the winter? I introduced myself a few pages back, but it looks like there are "regulars" here, and no one noticed my post, haha. ;)

We are doing a surprise trip for the kids in January, and we were thinking about the 78-81-77-26-95-4 route, but I am concerned about the weather at that time of year.

Thanks!

well, back in 1985 dw and i slept in the car in a truck stop because of the snow in the mtns of i81. back than there was very little around. now, its built up pretty good. i like the other rte in the winter. your not up in the shenan. mtns and there are alot more places to stop if you had to. ill be honest with you, when we go in the winter months anymore, we watch the weather and just adjust our plans. we left a day early back in 2007 to avoid an ice storm in pa. we have already left home a day early to beat a snow storm. i66 is the only part where you are sort of out in the middle of know where. your only on it for a short time. if you go 81/77/26. travel during the day and just keep an eye on the weather.:thumbsup2 sorry about missing your post. just pm me if it happens again.:thumbsup2

haha, no worries! Thanks for the advice...the only other time we drove was in August, and to be honest, I can't remember much of the drive...I may or may not have been snoozing while my husband drove :rolleyes1. I guess the thing that worries me a little bit is that we are sort of stuck in the time we can leave; we have to wait until my dh and ds get out of school for the day- so we can't leave until 3:30pm...not much flexibility, since I will be packing the car that day for the big surprise reveal. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that there is no snow storms our direction that day! I will definitely look at the 66 route, especially since we will be driving the majority in the dark. Thanks for the tips!

:thumbsup2 another thing you want to do driving at night. watch the trucks. if you think the roads just look wet and you see the trucks slowing down or pulling off, the roads are probley getting icey. keep a list of your fav. hotel chain phone numbers with you in the glove compartment. if for some reason it looks like it may get bad, dont risk it, its not worth killing yourself, just stop for the night and when the sun comes up things will get moving again.

I actually live in eastern Suffolk! We usually leave for the Bronx zoo and other city stuff around 9:30 am and by the time we get there the roads are not as busy because most of the worker traffic is at work:goodvibes! I hope that you have a safe drive!
