Huh, maybe we'll try that. We usually then take 81 to 66 (I think) to 17 to 95 to bypass DC. Do you do that as well. Just out of curiosity.

We tried this route for the first time today, too, and it was terrific. Very little traffic. And by the way, the gas stations on 17 close to getting on 95 were the absolute cheapest gas in Virginia we saw@ $3.55/gallon. Even NC was cheap @ $3.57 right as you cross over from Virginia. But, as usual Florence SC is the cheapest @ $3.53. Staying the night in Savannah, DH is out for a drive to the Tybee Island Lighthouse, then we will gas up in Brunswick in the am before hitting FL. Forecast is 90 degrees tomorrow. It's hot here tonight. ;)

A smooth and easy ride from the GF parking lot this morning at 8:20 a.m. until MM #90 in GA! A ten-mile crawl due to road paving. It took us one hour to go ten miles! :sad2:

High temp today: northern GA/southern SC: 90-degrees.

We made it to the Holiday Inn in Petersburg, VA for our overnight stay. Current temp: 50-degrees (a 40-degree swing in six hours).

All the best. :thumbsup2

hi marybeth200, i dont come down from your area but map quest and its time never work out for me either. i drive 1086 and do it in 16 1/2 hours total. we stop for gas and rest stops but we dont "stay and visit" to long in one place.:lmao: we are usualy a tad over the speed limit :rolleyes1 and map quest tells me all most 18 hours. driving times are hard to fiqure out, eveyone drives dif. and stops dif. but being its just the two of you and sounds like you stick to the road, i wouldnt think you would have to plan more than what map quest tells you.:thumbsup2 check-in. we got down to wdw early one year a day early. the northeast was going to have an ice storm and i wanted to get out before it hit. the guy at the counter told me i would stand a good chance at 6:30am to get a room. so, we stayed off property and checked in at okw at 6:30am. not saying it happens all the time but i think 6:30 is the start of there day.

Perfect info dvczerfs. Thanks :) I know it's wont happen all the time, but it's nice to at least have an idea what others have seen.

It's looking more and more likely that we will head out of Western Ma (near ct border) at 9pm. Our hope is to make it somewhere between Santee and Savannah. Mapquest has Santee at 856 miles and Savannah at around 965. Any good hotel recommendations? Need a pool, indoor if possible ( incase of rain) to keep DD entertained, while DH and I switch off napping. I admit I am a it of a hotel snob - prefer big names and Hotels to Motels. Gonna look at the i95 site too. TIA

I know that there are a few Marriott/Fairfield Inns off the highway in NC/SC/and GA....I never could find it on their website though. Last time we drove, stopped at a Fairfield in GA, able to get a room without a ressie, and they had an indoor pool. I want to say it was just after Santee if I remember correctly. But, no matter what, there were signs so just keep your eyes open for them.

We're home. :sad2:

We departed Petersburg, VA @ 9:30 a.m. and crossed into MD at 11:25 a.m. A mile-long crawl into the DE toll; we crossed the DE Memorial Bridge into NJ at 1:36 p.m. and arrived home at 3:13. :cool2:

Total gasoline costs: (driving to WDW): $124.50 (price range: $3.58 to $3.59); (driving home): $135. [We drove 77 miles in WDW.] Grand total: $259.50 (with a quarter of a tank left).

Now then...let our June countdown begin!

All the best. :thumbsup2

Made it to BCV's at 2:30 pm. Gas was cheaper in Savannah than in Brunswick. DH found it for $3.44 on his way back from Tybee Island last night. Stopped at Daytona Speedway to go to the cheap store behind the grandstand. Lots of people there! we are used to going at the end of August and the speedway is usually deserted. Jacksonville was smooth sailing, but there were signs of construction on some of the on/off ramps south of the city proper. Going to Epcot tonight to see the concert, stay for Illuminations. Considering then going to MK as they are open until 3 am, but we might skip it just because we are tired out from the drive. It's also very hot ... 90 degrees!

Hi everyone I am new to this site as we always fly but with the cost going up and up we decided we r going to drive. I am coming from Houston Texas..does anyone know the best route for us to take? and what time to leave on Thur june 2. we would like to get there as quick as posible to take advantage of star wars weekends. I dont think we will stop we will probably just drive straight through. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

After much debate, I finally booked my hotel rooms for my drive back in August with my niece. Since I will be the only driver, I was considering adding another day and splitting the drive back into 3 days + 1 day sightseeing. But after playing with the trip tiks some more, I decided to go for it and do the drive in basically 2 days + 1 day sightseeing. So our trip home will be:

- Jambo House up to the Richmond VA suburbs
- Sightseeing (Mount Vernon + GW Birthplace) + drive to Baltimore
- Balitmore to home

You will find a lot of sign on the highway, I prefer marriotts and have not had any problem finding them on the way down and we leave not far from you and head the same way. When are you heading down?

You'll find more of a selection near Savannah. And if you truly want a full-service hotel, Savannah proper isn't far off I-95.

Have fun planning! :lovestruc

:surfweb:We are leaving NH Thursday afternoon and will drive straight through... We shuld arrive at our destination alost exactly 24 hours later! My husband is a truck driver and has done many coast-to-coast trips in his career.... We travel commando style - 3 kids, my husband and myself and only stop for fuel and emergency pit stops. We get plenty of food and snacks and lots of movies and stuff to keep the kids busy! popcorn::

As kids we always drove to Florida - be it in a van or motorhome, I have many great memoreis from my childhood. Not to mention, it will cost us a fraction of what it would be to fly a family of 5 from Boston to Orlando and we will have our own vehicle while we are there!! We are all super excited - send us thoughts for safe travels!

Did I mention that we will be surprising the boys with a weekend adventure at WDW for Easter? We figured we'd be waiting in Holiday traffic on I95 or traffic at the MK or AK!? I pick MK or AK!! :woohoo:
(( Someone may have to remind me I said that))

For you driving vets, what is the best way to handle the tolls in FL? I am serisouly thinking about getting a Sunpass. We aren't going to be doing a ton of driving around. We will be coming to WDW from the Kennedy Space Center area and then are thinking of heading to City Walk one night to catch the Blue Man Group.
