Question: We are all familiar (especially those who were on the first "2,000+ mile round-trip drivers only!" thread) with those who have remained at WDW for long (10+ days/2 weeks or more) stays. But what is the shortest stay someone has had at WDW after driving 1,000 miles one way?

4 nights in WDW..the first trip, but we also stopped and spent 6 nights in SC with family! Now, we shorten the time with family to spend a minimum of 6 nights in Disney
We leave in 6 hours...I should be packing!!![]()
All this talk about booking hotels, has got me thinking. We leave on August 13th (13 days) from STL. We really have no clue how far we will get the first night. This is the first time we have ever driven anywhere with DS. I don't know how he will do at all. Also, DH has badly spained his ankle and is on crutches until August 12th. The doctor told him he can start walking on it the day we leave and its also his right ankle. So, I'm not sure how much help he is going to be driving.
The plan is to wake up around 4am and as soon as we get everything together -- hit the road. I don't think that will be anything later than 4:45am. We are going to get to Atlanta no matter what. I would like to stop for the night around 8-9pm (all depending upon how everyone is doing - it could be earlier or we might push for 11pm is everything is going smoothly).
Anyways, should we take the laptop and book something when we know about where we will be to stop? We don't have a wifi card or anything, so we would have to stop somewhere along the way that offers free wifi. (I know many of the McDonald's around here do).
What do you think?

In late 1990's, I had a friend that was getting married in the Grand Floridian. I drove down for the reception and left. It was 3 hours. No joke.
Based on what where I think you are at? If you left at say 5:00am you should be able to make Orlando no later than 11:00. (18hours) If you figure a break or two, 18 is a good guess. If you are just looking for a quick night to stay in and may be a breakfast, use Kayak.com and stay at Amerisuites by the Airport. I think you can get it for $46 if you are going to drive thru. If you are going to try and stop out side of town around 10 then it would be probably a bit more wise to just rest around 8/9 in Ocala,FL and then drive the 1-2 hours in the morning. As far as Atlanta goes, its about 9-10 hours from StL. Hope that helps. That does help. I think we are going to want to stop and get some rest before we drive into Disney. I don't know why I am thinking this is going to take longer. DH and I did the drive in 2005 (pre-DS) and I thought we left at 5am and made it to Lake City at 11:30-midnight. But I must be wrong on the times.

I don't know where everyone is getting these short hours from unless they are going way over the speed limit. We leave at 7-9 pm and with breaks and a sleep stop of a couple of hours in a rest area it takes us at least 20 hours and sometimes longer. This is with driving through the night with very little traffic. I drive for about 4-5 hours on the first shift, then DH takes over for about 8-10 hours. Then I drive a few more & then he drives the rest of the way. My driving depends on how long my eyes hold out. I have trouble sleeping when he is driving so my eyes don't get much rest. I like the part in the dark, because the sun bothers me.

im in nazareth, it takes me 16 1/2 hours. i can make it in 16 if i push it on the way home. which way are you going? on the way home we leave okw at 3:30am and im home by 7-7:30pm.
No speeding. If you look at the total trip 1026 devide by 65= 15 45m. But if you consider a time change and about 1 hour lost for fueling and stops at random you are down there in about 17-18 hours from St Louis.
I tend to agree with you though about driving. I drive for a living and prefer the night. Originally, I thought about driving down with more stops to "enjoy" the trip, but I don't really want to stop overnight on the way down. Plus we are traveling overnight. Our plan in Oct is to drive straight thru. Since I work second shift, I ll let my wife drive the first bit till KY. Then I ll go as long as I can. We are planning to to leave around 3pm-5pm and be down there sometime in the morning.![]()

Just did a Mapquest of our trip the way they would route us and it came to 1068 miles if we take the Turnpike, go through Philly and get on I 95. We don't go that way. We go out to Harrisburg, down 83 to 695 around Baltimore and the around DC. The mileage is a bit longer this way, but we don't have to pay tolls and miss going through Baltimore. So our trip is probably about 1100 miles total going down. 1100/ 65mph (average) = 16.92 hours and we don't have a time difference since we are in the same time zone. I don't know how that would make a difference, since you would still be driving the miles. Add rest & fuel stops & about 2-4 hours sleep in a rest stop & we are easily at 20+ hours.![]()
I think there may be a little confusion. When I was referring to Chipper10's question about how far they could get driving down, he/she asked for a starting location outside of St Louis,MO. I happen to live on the opposite for where he/she lives. I still find what everyone said valid from PA to FL, but not necessarily from STL,Mo to FL.I could be missing both your points and if I am, let me know.
