FOP and Motion Sickness

I found FOP to be the worst ride I have EVER experienced in terms of motion sickness. I can do smaller roller coasters and Soarin with no problem. I can’t do things like Star Tours or Mission Space. Everything I read in advance said it was similar to Soarin. Not true! I believe I took a bonine that day but it didn’t help and the ride impacted me like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I had to close my eyes within the first minute just to get through it and because the seat is moving it is also very unpleasant to have your eyes closed.

But if I hadn’t closed my eyes I’m quite certain I would not have been able to function for the rest the day. Hate to worry anyone but it was much much worse than I expected!

Thanks for posting your experience. I haven’t ridden FOP & your post helps confirm my decision not to. I get motion sick very easily. Even riding sideways on the buses can set it off, I won’t sit backwards ever. I can do Soarin with only occasional discomfort. Mission Space I have to close my eyes briefly near the end. I watched videos of FOP & know there is no way I could do it. Haven’t found a ride yet that is worth feeling that sick over!

I agree with you. I too found FOP to be pretty bad. I couldn't fully enjoy it because of the nausea. For me, im not even sure that closing my eyes really helps. But I do it anyway. Automatic reaction I guess.
Even closings my eyes didn’t help. I truly thought I was going to vomit. It was totally unexpected and definitely the worst ride I have ever experienced.

I agree. I still get nauseous even thou i do close my eyes. So really, it doesnt help.

I sympathise with everyone who have issues with motion sickness. But I do not understand why anyone who experiences this would even want to ride this attraction. The ride purposely tricks your senses into believing you are flying through the air. These sensory tricks are what make the ride exciting for some of us and make others sick. Taking medications like Dramamine will help with the motion sickness but will also lessen the ride experience. I have a fear of heights and cannot ever imagine myself going zip lining.

On a scale 1-10 of fine to sick for me-
1-soarin
5- flight of passage
6- Everest
9- mission space.
I really wanted to ride FOP but I was terrified i would be sick so I took a plastic bag in my pocket in case I barfed and just having that with me made me feel better! The wind during the ride helped a lot but towards the end I did close my eyes which helped me. I never felt like I was going to puke but did need to sit down with a sprite afterwards for about ten minutes to get back to feeling right. I won’t ride it again but I’m glad I rode it bc it really is a unique ride. I try to give all rides at least one chance- except those teacups- I will never get on those!

I would say Star Tours is definitely far worse for motion sickness than Mission Space. But as with most rides like this (but NOT Mission Space) closing eyes usually helps since the vast majority of motion is just simulated.

I’m guessing you haven’t been on FOP due to the fear of heights?

Despite the multiple warnings about fear of heights and motion sickness (both of which I have), I decided I’d give the ride a try, and I loved it. Motion affects everyone differently. Some rides bother my motion sickness (most notably Star Tours and Mission Space - even the green side), while others don’t (I don’t have issues with roller coasters, Soarin’, or FOP). I do fine on airplanes, but boats are a disaster and cars can be iffy at times. You don’t know how the ride will affect you unless you try it, and some of us are willing to risk it. Some people end up with good results (like me), and unfortunately, some people do not.

I must admit we did fop on one of our first days last month and I did feel motion sick during and after the ride. Worse
I felt sick on a few rides the rest of the week like Seven dwarfs mine train which never made me sick in the past. Once I get that feeling it takes a few days to get back to normal. Just my 2 cents. I like the idea and the theming but just not for me. The rest of my family loved the ride.

We Begin talking meclizine or Dramamine two days before our trip, then one daily. It helps to get the medication in your system prior to riding.

I get vertigo very easily- like I always drive our car, never DH. I took Bonine in copious amounts starting 11/24 and got on FOP 11/28. It was great and I did not get motion sick. Then I did it a second time a few hours later and was miserable. With meds I did not feel even a little sick on any other ride in the park.

I would compare the motion to Forbidden Journey in Hogwarts Castle at Universal. It's the "hovering"- banshee or broom- that pushes me over the edge on both rides.

DH just went on for the first time this past week. He gets dizzy easily (can’t handle Star Tours at all). We went with a bunch of friends and they convinced him to go on with them. He took a Dramamine a half hour before... said he got to one part in the ride when he knew if it continued, he’d be sick. Thankfully there was a pause and he was ok, but definitely still felt dizzy when he got off. He said he was happy he tried it, but wouldn’t do again.
