Paramount Pictures is moving ahead with their plans for a movie musical remake of the 1984 hit Footloose.

The new movie, which first emerged back in 2003, is being developed as a starring vehicle for High School Musical star Zac Efron who makes his feature acting debut in this weekend's Hairspray.

The original film starred Kevin Bacon as a city boy who moves to small town where rock music and dancing have been banned. The soundtrack featured a slew of hit songs, but they were primarily heard in the background. The new version will bring the songs to the forefront by having the film's young cast sing and dance the musical numbers.

High School Musical helmer Kenny Ortega is in talk to direct and choreograph the flick.

When the studio's first stab at the redo was launched, the plan was for four new songs to be penned by Dean Pitchford, the original's writer. But this is a whole new ballgame, and it's not clear whether or not that's still the plan.

Give ya a penny for them!?

I saw this last night on ETonight. Before I heard Zac Efron, I was totally disgusted, as I am a HUGE fan of the original. My theory is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". That said, I would probably see it, with my dd, and she and I both love High School Musical and Zac Efron is adorable. It will bring a huge new legion of fans to the movie. I'm guessing they'll have to clean it up a little though, as the new fans will be younger, and there are a couple of scenes in the original the prevent me from letting my daughter watch it yet.

Have they run out of original ideas in Hollywood? I can't stand that they are remaking all these great movies - I can't see anything comparing to the originals.

I totally LOVED that movie. I remember in high school, my friend Sheri and I used to watch that movie before we went to school dances. :rotfl:

I hesitate to watch a remake. It might ruin it for me.

Both of my kids will be excited about this! Actually, I am too!!

I do agree they would have to clean it up just a bit.

I feel old. Who knew they would start remaking movies that I saw in the theater. Where's my cane...

As the sole person on the planet who doesn't think HSM is the BEST thing EVER, I'll stick with the original.

I'll stick with the original. I, too, remember seeing that in the movie theater and ITA with WhatATreat. Why is Hollywood remaking movies? What's the point :confused3

I wish they would quit remaking everything!!!!!!

I have never watched HSM either and have no desire to. I've seen snippets of it, because my girls are huge fans and that's enough for me.

I can't think of any scenes in Footloose that need to be tamed....Maybe I have seen it 1 or 40 times too many times on regular tv to remember anything bad. :confused3

I didn't like HSM at all. I only saw the first half. That was pretty much all I could stomach. I was shocked when heard it was an updated Grease. Why update it? It was fine the way it was.

So, they are going to remake the part where none of the white kids are allowed to dance, but somehow at the end of the movie these kids suddenly know all the latest 80s dance moves? :lmao:

I loved Footloose when it came out in theatres. I was in 8th grade or something. Now I watch it and think it's lame.

I have never watched HSM either so I have no clue who this guy is. It was fine the way it was IMO.

"High School" Musical is a misnomer. It should be called "Middle School Musical" because that's clearly who it's geared toward. If they're thinking of doing this remake of Footloose to be like HSM, they're going to have to wash it out, put everyone in sparkly spandex, and smile vapidly as they preach the hell-burning.

Hollywood has always remade films on the grounds that what worked once (namely made money) will work again. This was particularly true in the '30s and '40s, when, once a film was out of release, you usually didn't see it again. Even retro houses weren't enough to keep a film alive. Remakes seem not-so-appropriate when you've got DVDs, and films never really die, but some times, to the financial wizards of Hollywood, they make sense.

In this case, they wanted dancing and singing teenagers who would appeal to the elementary school through tween crowd, and they chose a film that was released in 1984, 23 years ago, to remake. My DD7 will enjoy the singing and dancing. I can't say that it would be true with the original, since it's totally non-relevant to her, and Kevin Bacon would just look weird.

By the way, I just wanted to go on the record as saying that I really hated the original film. Of course, I was male and 33 when it was released, way, way out of the demographics. Still, Herbert Ross was an incredibly lackluster director, and the only performance I remember liking was John Lithgow's.

ummmm yeah, because the plot is so deep and nuanced and important, they feel they have something new and fresh to bring to it?

:rotfl:

Sorry, to me the "remake mania" is just laziness in not wanting to develop new scripts and ideas. blech.
