Foods that you refuse to purchase for your family

Sugar cereals, chips, processed snacks such as Little Debbies, and processed "add a meat" type dinners :scared1:

I buy very little soda or cookies but there's always something sweet to munch on at any given time, just not a large selection. Right now there are two brownies left over from the holidays and about 1/2 c of mint cc ice cream if DD asks for a dessert.

DD's downfall is cranberry juice cocktail (can you say SUGAR!) and mine is chardonnay (again, SUGAR!) ~ she lets me have mine and I let her have hers:laughing:

:rotfl: Never heard of them...Im scared to ask. What are pot noodles? I think of egg noodles or pasta?

Like ramen - you add boiling water to the noodles which come in a pot. The only utensil required is a fork. They are cheap and nasty and oh-so-good...:rotfl:

I never buy white bread, or even regular wheat bread, only 100% whole wheat. It would be 100% whole grain if anyone in the house would eat it- there isn't much nutritional value in bread that isn't actually ingested, lol.

We don't buy anything with RED 40 food dye- as recommended by our pediatrician. If ds has any at all you can see changes in not only his behavior but his physical appearance- ie: bags under eyes, eyes drooping. Artificial colors come with warning labels like cigarettes in some countries because they can have such a profound effect on children who have difficulty processing them.

We limit HFCS as much as we can. That is if there is an acceptable substitute we buy it and if there isn't then we'll enjoy that food only in moderation.

I don't buy fruit flavored drinks like Kool-aid and I also don't buy fruit juice because it is overpriced and has little if any nutritional value.

We buy very little meat from the store and most of ours comes directly from family farms where they are fed their natural diets. This meat has a markedly higher nutritional value and much lower instances of bacteria such as salmonella and ecoli. Our eggs also come from the farm. Since changing the source of our meat and eggs we stopped buying Omega-3 supplements because it is now found naturally in our food.

I agree with PPs that sometimes labels don't mean what we think they do and most things are fine in moderation. Dd doesn't have the same sensitivity as ds does to the food dye, HFCS is of particular concern to me because of a history of diabetes in my family and it is known to cause insulin levels to spike, and dh has a chronic intestinal issue that requires high fiber so we only buy 100% whole wheat bread. Our pediatrician was recommending Omega-3 for the kids but the ones that don't contain mercury are expensive and even then not absorbed as well as simply eating foods with Omega-3 so hence the meat and eggs. The juice and kool-aid is as much a budget issue and an encouragement to drink more water as anything in opposition to those drinks. Every family should educate themselves about what works for them.

I don't/won't buy any soda. There are occassions that if we're at a restaurant that doesn't have milk/juice that I'll allow my ds to have sprite, but I've never bought soda from the grocery store and have no plans to. When I was a kid, I basically lived on soda and my gums have/are really paying the price, and I just don't want that for my kiddos, not to mention that there's absolutely no nutritional value either.

processed foods ( sauces, soups..anything in a can!) and meat! No meat in my house! Water is all that is drank in my house, and no milk, we use rice milk if need be for cereal etc,,,

I never have bought white bread or regular soda (okay, twice I bought reg. soda, but it was for a party we were having and I felt rude not offering it)

I don't buy lunchables, because they look gross. I also don't buy ramen noodles or any kind of spaghetti in a can.

Cheese strings :sad2:

My partner can buy them if he wants, but they're just gross and so expensive for cheese that isn't even cheese?!

String cheese is real cheese.....:thumbsup2

I also agree with moderation. But the least thing I keep in my home is soda because they want to drink it like it is water.

Interesting flavors from that link  What is that last one-- doner...

eta--I don't buy white bread either. We only eat whole grain wheat.

No not kidding. She started this without about an ounce on her 6th birthday this year. Very good for her health.

I'm actually shocked that a 6 year old would want to drink it.

I can only think of 2 things that I refuse to buy because I think they are totally gross.
1. Kid Cuisine fish stick meal
2. The peanutbutter and jelly that comes in the jar together.

Spaghettios.
Fake cheese/velveeta.
White bread.
Ramen.
Veal.

Hamburger helper or similar things like that
Canned chili, most canned soups (there are a few I will buy).
Cookies
I'm sure there are a lot more ;)

I, too, feel that everything in moderation is okay so there really isn't much that I would refuse to buy.

The only thing I can come up with at the moment is juice boxes for my grandkids that aren't 100% juice. Like Sunny D, I would never buy that for them. Or any juice that has added sugar.

I guess liver would be another, as I can't stand the stuff and if DH wants it he can order it in a restaurant. :)

Most of the time I do not buy regular soda, except for in the summer when we're camping and have family/friends camping with us then I like a variety of sodas to offer so I will buy a couple regular ones to go along with the diet kinds.

Soda, sugary cereals that have crazy colors, Lunchables and any kind of canned Chef Boyrdee stuff (the smell is soooo bad in those ).

Otherwise, I'm all about moderation and there is not much I won't buy for a treat or a once-in-a-while snack.

Oh, and no devil dog will ever set foot in this house. Got sick on those once as a kid and can't stand the sight of them. :lmao:

I grew up drinking water and seltzer, and never really developed a taste for soda. Now, my kids like it as a treat, but drink 90% water from our cooler, and the occassional oj mixed with seltzer. They're just not used to sweet drinks, and I don't think I could drink undiluted on myself.
