Foods that will fade away with the Baby Boomer generation

Instant mashed potatoes.

Yes, I remember having them as a kid, we called them potato flakes. They never tasted as good as real potatoes; I could always tell the difference, and even some restaurants used them.

Growing up in a large family, my mom used several of this type of product to save money. We drank powdered milk (mixed with real), and orange juice made from canned frozen concentrate. Don’t know if either of those are still sold, but I’m sure they’re far less common than they used to be. Also, instant coffee, like Taster’s Choice (Nescafé) and Sanka. I don’t know anyone who drinks that anymore.

My wife seems to think that Braunschweiger may fade away.
It is kind of a divisive food to start with even among baby boomers.
Our kids are Millennials (age 27 and 31) and like it, although DD is now a pescatarian, but she says she misses it.
Funny thing is, I am the only one in the family that likes just plain liver.

Any foods you think will fall out of favor as the generation that eats it ages?
To me , a lot of kids don't do veggies. You may see a dwindling of veggies, inho.

My dad ate Liverwurst.....I never did. He liked it on a sandwich with grape jelly
My parents served liver and onions. I didn't eat it then and still don't.
We also had a canister of bacon grease on the stove.....I never did that.
My mother tripped the fat off meat and fried it, not for me thank you

I like kale in soups, etc. Don't like the taste of it raw, but do eat it sometimes.
I love mayo and use a lot of it.
Don't take margarine away. DGD is dairy allergic so we use margarine in baking and she loves to bake.

OP, I’ve never had braunschweiger, but definitely don’t like liverwurst. I rarely eat cold cuts, and if I do it’s usually turkey breast or roast beef, not the processed stuff. As a kid, I ate lots of bologna and something called luncheon loaf, which I’d never touch now.

I don't see as many restaurants offering smelt fry anymore.

I think that was more of a Silent Generation thing, not Baby Boomer. The same with liver & onions, tongue and other organ meats.

Snapper soup, the combo of fried oysters & chicken salad, Pepper Pot soup (made with beef tripe).

All of those are still available. I remember decades ago there dozens of varieties of frozen concentrates for juice and drinks. These days it seems stores might have 4 or 5 on the bottom shelf of one freezer door,

Am I the only person here who actually loves kale? I don't get the hate. I love all greens though. So healthy and the best fiber.
That's what they tells us, and I eat it because it is supposedly very good for me. That and because the "foodie" restaurants put it in practically every menu item. :p
Looooove leafy greens. So damn flavorful and addictive. Yum. I just wish the prep work wasn't so time consuming.
I buy a ton of bagged, chopped salad. It comes in 5 or 6 different varieties but kale is the main ingredient in all of them. Yes, the 10 seconds it takes to open the bag and dress it is a drag, but I soldier on...:rotfl:

I've almost always got a couple of cans of frozen juice in the house in case I need to throw a punch together. And praise the Lord for instant coffee :worship: - it kept me from dying of caffeine withdrawal when I was in Europe for 2 weeks. In France, Italy and Spain I could find no such thing as regular, drip coffee and my stomach couldn't tolerate enough espresso or disgusting, French-pressed sludge to keep the headaches at bay. :headache:

I would only eat that red dessert. Didn't it have cranberries in it? It was great. No way would I eat those peas and whatever dead animal parts were floating around in that gravy. I hid it in my napkin and gave it to the neighbour's dog. Eww, remember the soaking wet fried chicken?

OMG!! Sanka. I had totally forgotten that. Potato flakes. HAHA. Frozen OJ is still available. The thing is all the so-called premium orange juices aren't truly any better. They taste better because they have different flavor packets put in them. They're all stored for long periods of time in aseptic storage, with the oxygen removed for longer storage times and pasteurized. And that takes the entirety of the flavor out of it. The flavor is added back in with flavor packets. Think of perfume and all the essences that go into them. Same deal except with parts of oranges instead of what they use in perfume. If you truly want an oj that is truly simply orange, buy some oranges and squeeze em yourself. Valencia oranges are best for juice. But their season is about three months domestically.

Process chopped and formed lunchmeat. $5-$10 a pound. A whole ham that you can cut yourself. $1-$3 a pound. I've totally sworn off the processed stuff.

TV dinners there's nothin' else to eat
TV dinners they really can't be beat
I like 'em frozen but you understand
I throw 'em in and wave 'em and I'm a brand new man oh yeah!
TV dinners they're goin' to my head
TV dinners my skin is turnin' red
Twenty year old turkey in a thirty year old tin
I can't wait until tomorrow.... and thaw one out again oh yeah!
TV dinners I'm feelin' kinda rough
TV dinners this one's kinda tough
I like the enchiladas and the teriaki too
I even like the chicken if.... the sauce is not too blue.
And they're mine, all mine, oh yeah
And they sure are fine.
Gotta have 'em
Gimme somethin' now.

I believe that was actually the chopped sirloin. Don't hold me to that though and as a kid I really didn't think they were all that different.

The sad thing is, Swanson wasn't the next best thing to my mom's cooking as the commercial suggested. It was superior. Sad. So sad.

My parents thought themselves fancy because they mostly bought the turkey tv dinners, thinking it was much healthier. I think they died and went to heaven when tv dinners came out. They were a staple in our diet.

True, and there was that great little dessert. Much better than the canned fruit cocktail. Four kids fighting over the cherry.

We had the mexican ones quite a bit. I could only wish Mom served us Turkey TV dinners. She thought she was a great cook. But here's her turkey.
